It’s not going to cost a huge amount, and you’ve already got the floorboards up, so you may as well.

Personally, I don’t like Google Play Music. Every time I’ve tried to use it through Google Now, and quite a few times I’ve used it normally, it’s ignored my choice to stay offline, and it’s played music from my online library. It’s all well and good if I’m at home, but it’s a PITA when I’m out. Apart from a crap signal interrupting playback, it eats into any data cap you may have.

I’m using the now discontinued Fusion Music Player at the moment, but am still on the lookout for something better too.

One of the best aids to a warm house was when we put reflective foil behind each radiator that was mounted on an outside wall. This made a huge difference to room temperatures with no increase in running costs.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to do this too.

            Did you get anything special?

My uncle’s been a plumber and gas engineer for years, and I was asking him about this recently. I asked if it’s worth creating different heating zones in the house, and getting smart radiator valves, and his answer was that at the moment there’s no point.

The wireless main thermostat is great, because it can be taken anywhere. If you end up using a different room as your main room, you can just take it with you. As far as smart radiator valves go, you find that once you’ve figured out your comfortable temp for a particular room, you don’t generally change it. The idea of being able to tell the heating to switch on when you’re heading home from work is great, but if you finish at a regular time, you can just set the timer on the boiler itself. Even my ancient boiler’s got that  :yahoo:

It’s one of the few perks of being ill in a small village. Everyone who knows I can fix things also knows that I almost died several years ago, and most of them are too scared to ask how I’m doing now (a few well timed coughs usually help too  😉 ). As a result, I can get away with telling them that I don’t do anything with other people’s tech anymore, as I can’t guarantee I won’t make it worse.

A bit naughty, but saves me from situations like yours, or the almost weekly Facebook posts of ‘I’ve lost my phone and every photo of my kids are on it with no other copies’

I did a college course a few years ago, and I don’t think we even got as far as loading Office…

So I’m looking at flogging mine, paying the additional fees that will occur (early repayment charges) and then do as you’re saying.

My brother’s got a contract with an estate agent where he pays a fixed fee of about 10 – 15% and they manage the property, including guaranteed rent. Obviously he’s got the option of increasing the rent slightly to cover the fee too  :good:

But pretty sad when my birthday falls on a Friday night and I’m sat in looking at plastic chairs.

                      Happy belated birthday  :yahoo:

Half a dozen debian based linux tablets as apache servers instead of a pile of dell headles base pc’s I currently have would be ideal.

Or buy one Xeon server and virtualise the lot? ?

I’ve got a lovely Blade server you can have cheap

Cheers Les & blacklion I feel confident it won’t be a waste to purchase USB powered kit.

What USB powered kit are you hoping to run from your TV?

If the rough-idea I had comes to fruition, the new boiler would go in an upstairs cupboard, replacing the hot water tank. This means that all hot water can easily be plumbed in.

It’s been a while since I last checked, but I don’t think that boilers can go in bedrooms anymore. Either way, you might be better off putting it in the attic if you can, so that it’s out of the way.

It’s designed to show the viewer their details, and make them aware of what info they’re giving out. I’ve been using it for at least nine years, so it’s not doing too badly considering.

Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet lately, it was the baby’s birthday this week, so we haven’t stopped

One option I’ve been looking at is creating a personal VPN, but as I use torrents now and again, that might be a dead end. Paul O’Brien from MoDaCo has a guide here:

I could get your browser, os , location etc…. Maybe later though, I’m thinking at the moment. Sent your i.p though.

Let’s see if this still works…

@ tippon Most modern freeview boxes from what I have noticed only provide scart out. The early boxes use to do RF/Anolouge out but the ones I have are dead and whats left in my cupboards is as said scart only.

It’s the old boxes I was thinking of. I thought I had one here, but I just checked and it’s gone

Lee, the way that is intended, you will need to select analogue TV. If you have digital only, you are out of luck.

Isn’t that what the digital boxes do though, convert the digital input into an analogue output for the TV?

A wireless network links them all up and we use VNC to copy content to the distribution PCs and control VLC. That way each block can run it’s own content and there’s no single point of failure as there would be if we’d gone down the streaming route.

You might find it easier to set up separate folders for each block, and sync them to the distribution TVs, so there’s less manual work needed  :good:

well i’ve got the bug for some pc tinkering, even as far as considering scraping eBay for 775 CPUs and building what would have been a dream machine circa 2017.

                                            A 2017 dream machine?  😉

That’s basically what I’ve been doing by accident with my bloody server. I’ve got most of the parts ready for a decent build now though, I just need to pull my finger out and start building
