Sorry, just noticed a typo in my last post. Should have said I *didn’t* know there was a Shield controller ?

Using the Xbox 360 controller needs either a USB OTG cable, or a wireless receiver, which defeats the object of a wireless setup. Doesn’t help that the new phone is the only thing I’ve got with USB C too, so none of my existing peripherals work.

Thanks Steve, I wouldn’t have thought of the Wii remote. I’ll have to dig that out and see if it still works, and look at what games I’ve got too. I’ll probably need more buttons for a SNES emulator though 🙂

EDIT: Just had another look on Amazon and saw this:

      https://www.amazon.co.uk/KevenAnna-Sminiker-Wireless-Bluetooth-Controller/dp/B01DJ5LDBM/

For the price, I’m going to give it a go. Both my phones have the power button just under where the clip will be, but as they’re fairly close to the centre of the phone, there’s not much I can do about that. I’m tempted to get this too, and load up on SNES ROMs ?

Sorry for the slow reply, we’ve had a busy few days.

Thanks for the link, I know there was a separate controller for the Shield. It is a bit expensive though, especially as I don’t game much at the moment. The idea is to get a few more ROMs onto my phone along with some free games, then see how I go. You have reminded me that I’ve got a few Xbox 360 wireless controllers here though, so I’ll look into getting one of them working too.

The main thing I’m after is some sort of holder, whichever controller I go for, as I basically want to make a handheld system. If it can work with a OnePlus One as well, all the better, as I’m going to wipe and update that soon.

I’ve just found out that my current case blocks the headphone socket on the Honor 9, so that’s a pain. Some cables fit and some don’t ?

Realised a few months ago that we never got around to activating the parts warranty on the cooker and washing machine. Luckily Ellen made the call…

Everything was still covered, and a happy sounding salesman told her that it’s not a problem that we hadn’t set it up yet. Took our details, then told Ellen that all parts were covered, but could only be delivered and fitted by one of their own for a minimum cost of about £120 *per part* even if it was the same visit. She told them where they could stick the warranty a lot more politely than I would have, especially as I’d recently stripped the washing machine to clean the drain, so saw how simple it was to replace everything* ???

*That was a fun job, seeing as we wisely had it built into the fitted kitchen and put behind a door and plinth ?

It arrived not as advertised (it’s the ram) not sure if I should make a fuss. Dell Optiplex 760 Windows 10 Pro Q9400 (4 Cores) 1TB HDD 4GB Ram (not the advertised 8GB) shown in system information? They sent me a reciept even that has 8GB on it.

Just to check, is it 64 bit Windows?

                  Thanks both 🙂

I found the NDCS website last night, but with the greatest of respect to them, the old looking site and the phone number as a first point of contact threw me. I wasn’t sure if I’d found a proper site. I didn’t have a clue where to look on it either, so the links are a great help 🙂

Bob: Nothing personal behind the reasons for looking into sign language. It’s something that a few of us toyed with in school after some of my friends did a bit of care work on weekends, but I never took it further than learning some of the alphabet. I always meant to learn how to sign, but never got around to it. Alice is at the age where she’s picking things up really quickly, but can’t quite speak yet, so I thought that signing might be something nice to learn together that could also be handy in the future.

My mother suggested Edith for Alice, but my wife rejected it saying it was awful. My mother then told her that it was my grandmother’s name ??

Yes, I noticed something similar the other night, I did not put it down to the forum at the time though as Thunderbird does the same for me. I’ll look into, it’s damn annoying.

Yeah, this was it. As long as you were using some kind of accessibility feature you could still get the free upgrade.

I’m amazed that ‘normal’ people spend upwards of £700 on a phone, especially when they use it for social media and not much else. I can kinda understand us geeks doing it, but we’re not just pouting at the camera, or pointing it at our dinners.

I know what you mean about the cameras too Dave. I love the camera on the 1+1 in decent light, but as soon as it starts to get dark, it’s crap. I haven’t found a camera app that can cope with windows either. As soon as I try to take a photo or video near a window, the focus and brightness start having hissy fits trying to decide what to do. Tell the Pentax where to focus and how bright I want things, and that’s it, it works.

my skill at combat seems insufficient to get past a sticking point around the beginning of episode 3 which is only about one third of the way through the game … I just need to be able to survive the impossible (for me) fight sequences and play out the story as the character and see the end.

I know what you mean. There’s a section in Rogue Trooper where it suddenly turns into an FPS and is quite fast paced. It’s completely at odds with the game up to that point, and I’ve never got past it. That was years ago, and it put me right off the game.

Sorry for not replying sooner. We’ve just ordered two of the Honor 9. We were going to go for one phone and one SIM, but Alice decided that she didn’t like nursery rhymes and threw Ellen’s phone across the tiled kitchen ??

Looking at the deals, there was only the one Essentials deal that was a similar price to the 12GB deal, and it was 4GB for £26 a month once the upfront cost was added. For £29 we’ve now got the 12GB deal with tethering, around the world, and bingeing on certain services.

Thanks again for pointing that deal out Dave, and everyone else who replied 🙂

I would stick with five stars, as that’s now a standard. If someone sees that a product has three stars, they’ll automatically think that it’s average, rather than good.

                                    No problem.

                                    Thanks Dave 🙂

I think it’s a great idea. It doesn’t have to be a detailed piece.

If you don’t mind, could you do some mini reviews on the kit you use for the charity etc.? Every man and his dog reviews the brand new shiny toys, but no one seems to review the stuff that your average person would use.

I’m about to price a new system for my father, so I’m being a bit selfish too ?

I’d try the old trick of booting up with linux on a flash drive or live CD to rule out hardware problem before you go spending ages on looking at software.

Thanks Phitore, I hadn’t thought to try a live disc. I’ll give it a go next time I’m there. P.S. Welcome to Forumite ?

Thanks Ed, I’ll try VLC. I always forget that it’s got its own codecs.
