Ah, ok. I thought they’d need to cover the top of the radiator to get the most out of it. Happy to be wrong if it saves me £100 though ?
If I was handy, I’d completely box the radiators in with reflective foil on the inside, and one or two of those on top, but the mess I’d make would be so bad that I’d have to get medieval and pull out the tongues of anyone who’d seen it, so they couldn’t tell anyone else ??
I’ve just done a quick measurement on the living room radiator, and it’s 2M long, so I’d need four of the ready made fans that Steve linked to ?
I think it sounds like a good idea, if a bit expensive. Obviously pointless for people like us, who know what we’re doing, but for someone like my mother it would be ideal.
If I knew how to automate it, I’d make one for her myself.
Tippon, That does sound like a sensible way forward, though do your homework first and get a plumber who does not feel you are the lottery payout office.
I’m quite lucky here, in that I have a few friends and an uncle who are plumbers. I can get the job done for a decent price through any of them, but I’m putting together a list of all DIY jobs first while the plumbing isn’t urgent, so that nothing overlaps, and I don’t need repeat callouts.
As an example, the garage is downstairs at the front, and I’m fitting part of my old kitchen along the side wall. It will be easier to get the taps and sink plumbed in while the plumber’s here for the bathroom. There’s an old drain fitting for a sink somewhere outside the garage door, so the excess pipe from upstairs can be reused for that run.
Time to do the hard part now, and see how much cash I need to part with.
@sawboman Thanks for the advice 🙂
My wife’s on holidays, and my mother didn’t take my daughter until later than usual this week, so it was dark before I had a chance to check outside today. As the house is on a hill, the back ground level is upstairs, if that makes sense. It makes it easier for maintenance work, but as the dogs have free run of the garden, I didn’t want to risk finding a present in the dark. I checked the room under the bathroom, and there was no sign of moisture, so I’m taking that as a good sign.
The sink has a U bend directly under the plug, so if I’m understanding your quotes correctly, it should be fine. I’ll probably get a plumber in though, as I have a few small jobs building up, and I’m struggling to get them done at the moment. They’re relatively small jobs, but fiddly, like changing the washers on the kitchen tap, and replacing the innards of the toilets.
I have not ventured out except to revise the temporary boiler drain installation to ensure the water has the fastest rout out into the drain. The old pipe has about 5 feet of ice blocking it now, so that has to go if the weather ever improves and I can set up a better fix. Much more of this and I will be going stir crazy.
Almost identical situation here over the last few days. I dug our recycling out from under a neighbour’s car on Thursday morning, and ventured to the back garden in the evening to check the boiler pipe and drain from the bathroom sink. The boiler pipe was fine. Frozen, but only about half an inch into the pipe.
The drain from the sink was knackered though. Somewhere in the history of this house, a DIY bodger has ‘had a go’. I’m bad, but this person was bloody awful. The sink in question is in a separate room with just a toilet, and has a downpipe for the toilet directly outside. The downpipe has a port for a sink drain to be connected, and at first glance, it looks like that’s what’s been done. Instead though, they’ve added about ten feet of pipe clipped along the wall to the nearest available open drain. The pipe sags near the middle where it wasn’t clipped on properly, so the usual gunk has built up, and then the water has frozen behind it. The pipe’s sagged more under the weight and more water has built up and frozen etc. until the pipe came away from the wall and blocked completely.
Luckily, the sink is the only place where the water can come out, but with the length of pipe inside the house too, there’s about 12 feet or more of water, ice, and gunk between the sink and the blockage. As the weather here has stayed below freezing until today, I haven’t been able to do anything with it.
The water in the sink went down on its own earlier, so I’m hoping that the pipe has defrosted enough for the water to pass, otherwise, it’s in the house somewhere! ?
Thanks both. I may try Lubuntu then.
I was using Ubuntu Studio so that I could try it before I install it on my main PC, and see if it’s any good for me, so I might still play with it for a bit first. Either way, a reinstall is on the cards.
Marc, this could be of interest to you http://openecohomes.org/diy-fanned-radiator/ They appear to be someone who has walked that way before.
That looks very interesting. I’ve been looking at the radiator ducts, but they’re a bit expensive for something that may not make much difference. I’ve used short blocks of wood for now, and placed them between the settee feet and the wall, stopping the settee from being pushed against the radiator. They haven’t made a huge difference, but enough to make them a part of something else.
Bit of a coincidence, but I saw this earlier:
and this quote stood out:
Have you heard of the thermoelectric effect? It’s a neat quirk of physics that allows for the generation of a voltage when a specialized device known as a thermocouple is registering at different temperatures on either side of it.
I’ve got an old thermocouple here somewhere that was used as a Peltier back when I used to overclock. I’m wondering now how much electricity would be produced if I strapped it to a radiator. Enough to power a fan or two perhaps? Probably not, but if I can find it, I might have a play. Try to power the fan from the radiator.
The exhaust might be another thing about to go from condensation…
Seconded. My wife’s got the 2010 Ka, and we replaced the box on the end of the exhaust last year (technical term that ??). She hammers her car a bit, doing 100+ miles a week minimum, in all weathers, so her exhaust would have gone quicker than most. It only cost about £35 for an eBay replacement though, so not the end of the world.
It was strange here. Nothing at all for us, but Facebook was full of local friends asking what had happened. Some of them are only a few streets away too.
I’ve got the original disc here somewhere. The graphics on a 3DFX card were amazing for the time, but on any other card it looked blocky and awful. I started to build a P4 based Win 98 machine to play it on, but I never got around to installing the graphics card.
Dungeons 2 is free today on GOG.com ?
King of Fighters 2002 from GOG. Reviews for this particular port are not great though, as you don’t seem to be able to change the controls.
If I won the Lottery Big One this week, there is no way on this corrupt, capitalist-driven planet that I would dip my toes into investment again.
I’d treat investments in the same way that Steve says he treats bets in the other thread – I’d consider the money gone as soon as the investment was made, and anything that comes back would be a bonus. Maybe not the ‘best’ way to handle it, but probably the best way to do it without getting overly stressed.
When you get a piece about the internet you see a rack of switches and patch leads as they actually have flashing lights. Anything to do with cyber security is a scrolling script.
Someone wants to open a video file, so they hammer away at the keyboard. Any time someone needs a file from the server, they have to go to a server room full of flashing lights, plug a pen drive into the specific server, then copy the file. If the file is somehow lost or destroyed afterwards, they can’t go back for another copy.
Can you get Windows into safe mode? It sounds like something might be hanging on start, which is also preventing the clean shut down.
My father used to say that it is only blunt tools that cut. Blunt ones tend to ‘stick’ and jerk where you least expect.
Blunt tools and multi bladed razors ?
I wouldn’t like to guess the number of times that a multi bladed razor has either cut me because the factory finish is shoddy, or caught a hair and given it a quick yank ?
Tomorrow’s hospital (UHW, Heath, Cardiff) is a nightmare, Tippon will know it well, disabled parking is ample but a fair distance from the main hospital and x ray is another slog down the main corridor. I literally have no idea how long it’ll take me get to the x ray department as I fatigue quickly these days and need rests far more often than I like.
Oh yes, I know it ?
A few things to be aware of for tomorrow:
General visiting is between two and four, so the disabled car park will probably be full. If you’re feeling brave, park in the drop off area outside concourse instead. It’s a bit cheeky, but it’s usually full of taxis anyway. If you get caught, just explain that it takes you a while to walk anywhere, so you took longer than you expected.
The entrance to the hospital has been changed. If you’re coming in off the flyover, you’ve now got to go all the way around the back of the hospital instead of passing A&E. It’s pretty straightforward, and brings you out by the roundabout at the multi storey car park entrance.
There’s a new coffee shop and some basic seating about ten yards further up than the x-ray department entrance. It’s not much cheaper than Starbucks, but I think it’s nicer. The seating is under the stairs next to the radio station.
Good luck ?
Might explain a few things…
Glad to hear of the relief from the appointment 🙂
The one time I ever put a ‘proper’ bet on in a betting office was in Scotland for the six nations, years ago. As Steve says, it was more as part of the experience than anything else. I can’t remember the exact details, but I put about a tenner on a Welsh player to score the first try. We did a draw to pick a player, and I got one of the big names, Shane Williams I think. Watching the game in the pub, and my player got the ball and made a break up the side of the pitch, looking like he was going all the way. He’d left most of the Scottish team behind, and looked like it was a sure thing. As my friends started shouting about how I’ve got to get the next round, the bar steward passed the ball!!! About ten yards from the line, unopposed, and he passed! ?
I haven’t put a bet on since ?
