Yup, have decided I’m going to make a new server based on them. Can’t decide between the 2400G or a cheap 1600 though.
The 2400 has just had a price cut:

Good luck Bob 🙂
April 2, 2018 at 12:45 am in reply to: Brexit – The only ones likely to lose out are politicians #19090I hope you’re right. One of the suspected casualties is Ford in Bridgend. It has over 1,000 staff, including family members 🙁
That’s pretty much what I’ve done, except I go down to a number 4. My head’s too lumpy and full of scars to go any lower.
I impressed myself last week though. I had to look reasonable for a christening, so I brushed the top towards the middle, and shaved the back and sides. Short back and sides in a hurry. After a few washes now, I can see where it’s not perfect, but it’s pretty damned good for something I did in the mirror in a rush ?
We use to have a 3rd party service that would keep mine and the wife’s contacts in sync. That was a great bit of kit. But sadly they went out of business about 7 years ago.
I set up a spare Gmail account just for bills and things, and put that on both our phones. I use that whenever I set up a new energy account, or anything else that concerns the both of us. It would be simple enough to use that as the main account for both our contacts and let it sync to all devices.
From some of your posts, it sounds like you’re in a similar position to me Richard – essentially housebound, or limited to a small area. Although we’re restricted for different reasons, neither of us have much use for a lot of the ‘staples’ of mobile phones, like needing maps to go to hospitals, or finding friends on a night out. Our circumstances and Bob’s other thread praising the internet have given me an idea for Ellen’s grandfather that I wouldn’t have otherwise thought of though, so thank you both for that 🙂
He usually stays within a relatively small area when he’s out and about, but does go on holidays to Benidorm, for example. Now that he’s got a half decent phone, I can make sure that it’s set up with Google Maps and Assistant etc. so that it will give him suggestions of places to go when he’s away, or be able to share his location if he does take a wrong turn along the way.
One app i absolutely love for giving others directions to me or vice verse is glimpse.
Sod’s law, it’s got odd spelling! It’s Glympse on Google Play, and comes with optional Android Auto and messaging add ons, so you can send your location over messaging services and from the car. I’ve just found it from your description, and it looks really handy, thanks 🙂
Glympse is here:

Not sure if this was posted on MM, but Starcraft is now free, probably as an advert for the remastered version. You’ll need to install Battle.net, but it looks ok.
Trillian was the old program for that. I used to use it to log into MSN, AOL, ICQ, and half a dozen Yahoo! aliases. Never spoke to anyone though ?
That’s odd, I thought I replied last night?
Either way, thanks for trying Steve 🙂 I think I’m sticking with the Simpler dialer though. It’s let me start with my favourites, and in the order that I choose, and it’s got the option to either dial or open the properties first. In the properties it’s got shortcuts to text, call, WhatsApp, email, or block the caller, along with an arrow that takes you to the contact’s full info, like secondary numbers and emails.
The more I’m playing with it, the more I think it will be good for Ellen’s grandfather too – set it to open the properties first, and he’s more likely to use WhatsApp and texting because it’s in front of him. They both take you to an existing conversation with that contact, so probably easier for a novice.
I just tried to install it, and get the error message that it’s not compatible with my device. Looks like I’m sticking with the other one for now.
Thanks for the files though Steve 🙂
That’s how I’m hoping for him to use WhatsApp on the phone. It’s a shame it has to be tied to a mobile number. I thought about using another app, but then everyone else would have to install and use it too, and I can’t do tech support for all of them 😀
Thanks Steve 🙂
It’s just updated Contacts though, and done nothing with the dialler. I looked online, and apparently if Google Play says it’s incompatible, then that’s it, even if you get the .apk
I also found that Huawei are releasing Oreo for the Honor 9, so hopefully I’ll get that soon and have more options 🙁
EDIT: I may have found one. Dialer by SimplerApps. Completely free and seems to do it all. I’ll play with it over the next few days.

Thanks both 🙂
Bob: You’ve reminded me that he’s got a tablet floating around somewhere. I’ve got no idea what it is, or what size, but we can dig it out next time we’re there and set it up. I hadn’t thought about catch-up TV or radio, as I don’t tend to use them myself, so that’s a great idea, thanks. He’s really into his rugby, so I’ll see what’s out there for that, and get a link to the local paper’s sports section if it’s available.
I can access all parts of the PC – so in that even would it be a wise or unwise decision to copy off the files the owner really would like to keep?
Copy them onto a blank USB drive, then reboot the computer from a live CD. Install and update an antivirus, and scan the files.
Maybe set up a throwaway Google account and upload the files to Drive (depending on the size). Google scans them before you download them, and I imagine they won’t let a nasty slip through. Have a look at the Security section here:
Actually, looking at the stock dialler, it does everything I want TC to do, apart from identify personal numbers. Seeing as that rarely works for me anyway, this may be the way to go.
Or it would be if I could install it! Apparently it’s not compatible with any of my devices. Sometimes I hate technology…
Brilliant thanks guys
Thanks Steve.
I’ve just had a quick look at the True Caller dialler, and it’s different to the one on the 1+1. I’ll have a play with it and see how I get on. It looks like Cyanogen had their own dialler that used TC, but was still different.
The annoying part is, I’ve got the 1+ here, and I can’t find any info on the dialler…
This might even give you a shock Ed:
