Glad to hear the op went well. Good luck to you both going forward.
Good luck Bob 🙂
MediaMonkey does it for Android.

I’ve got the Pro version, so can’t test the free sleep timer, but there shouldn’t be a difference. You set the amount of time, the volume to fade to (presumably 0% is off), and whether to finish the final song if it takes you over the timer e.g. if you’ve got a 30 minute timer and a song starts at 29 minutes, will it cut it off.
I didn’t realise that it was an option, which is a shame, I could have done with it last week.
Thanks Ed 🙂
I haven’t had much chance to do anything this week. I was ill first, then Alice picked up some sort of infection. She’s been waking herself up through the night, and I’ve been getting up with her as Ellen’s got work. Trying to follow the And, Or and Not lessons on no sleep was a bad idea.
It didn’t help that Codecademy decided to throw in loads of maths in the practice examples too. One of the question was along the lines of ‘Make line 2 equal to (-(-(-2))) * 45 (17 + -34) * 48 = Not Not True. I haven’t used brackets in anger in over twenty years, and they’re throwing that in along with != and > < etc. when I’ve had no sleep! ???
You should be able to turn indexing off on that drive and see if it makes any difference.
This is one of those times where I really hate Windows. I reinstalled onto a new drive fairly recently, and you reminded me that I hadn’t turned off indexing. I did it on my storage drive, and an hour later it’s still chugging along. I minimised the dialogue box and found out why it’s taking so long – it found an error, but didn’t make any sort of sound and placed the notification behind the progress bar ?
No one should be made to wear the poppy. It’s a charity arter all. The last few years have been a discrace regarding TV hosts being bullied into wearing them. If anything this type of witch huntery, puts me off wanting one. Not to mention I’m not a fan of charities that prop government systems up. I like what thy do, just with the government would do it, and the charity not be needed.
This pretty much sums up how I feel.
I am not familiar with Python syntax but as they asked you to “update” point_total you probably don’t need a new variable. The syntax in BASIC would be : point_total=point_total+(exercises_completed*points_per_exercise)
That’s interesting, thanks 🙂 I didn’t think of brackets, and probably wouldn’t have either because they’re used elsewhere. I’ll have a play when I’m on the computer tomorrow 🙂
It’s strange to see the differences between the languages for the same task. It makes you realise that they really are languages, and it’s not just a buzzword or something daft.
I just read back my last reply and it seems to be a bit negative, it was not meant to be ! Keep up the good work
Nah, I read it as someone offering advice, which I’m grateful for 🙂
One thing that I found weird last night was saving in Notepad++. I saved some examples as .txt files just for reminders, but I saved the game as a .py file. As soon as I clicked save, the text colours changed, and things like brackets were highlighted. Daft as it might sound, it made it feel more like programming than just copying and modifying text 😀
Well, I’ve just done my first bit of programming 😀
I’ve been going through a load of the Codecademy basics, so have only just started the Python course. It’s not as hard as I was expecting, so that’s a bonus. Codecademy seems to skip forward though. One of the tests used concatenation before it was introduced in a following lesson. It was confusing, but there were links to get help, so I got past it. One of the other tests used this:
exercises_completed = 13
points_per_exercise = 5
point_total = 100and told me to update the point_total to the existing point_total plus exercises_completed x points_per_exercise, but it had only shown addition and subtraction so far. I created a new variable, but was marked as wrong. I went back to the previous few pages to see what I’d missed, and when I returned to it, the exercise had marked my answer as correct, so I don’t know what their correct answer was. This was how I finished that exercise:
total = int(exercises_completed)*int(points_per_exercise)
point_total +=totalI’ve gone onto the mad libs game now, which really drums in how repetitive programming can be! It’s great though, because I’ve just ‘written’* a game 😀
Thanks again for the Codecademy links Ed 🙂
*not really written, just copied, but I’m claiming a victory 😀
Where’s the fun in that though Ed? 😉
I’ve still got the remains of my 486 SX25 floating around somewhere. I’ve been tempted for a while to rebuild it and play some DOS games 🙂
Thanks Steve 🙂
The hub looks pretty handy as it is. We’ve got a night light on the landing between the bedrooms now, and adding a timed radio would help us all with getting into a morning routine. At the moment we get up when we need to, but I want us to get up early and have breakfast before we go out, like the stereotypical American family breakfast you see on TV.
It’s a shame that the fire alarms can’t be mains wired, as my existing wired alarms have given up. They look ideal for everything else though. I’m going to be spending a lot with these I think >.<
Side note – The mija smart system is the cheapest entry into the start things world. Lots of kits offered too, the favourite of mine is their smart smoke alarm, and there cheap thermostats, which are about £4 each off a slow boat, and just work, £about £10 of you want one quick.
Have you got links to these please Steve? I could do with sorting the smoke alarms here 🙂
Chis you have never lived untill you have woke up in a steam!
The bike club I’m in used to help out with the Aberdare Park Road Races. In 2009 we camped in the marquee as overnight security. I woke up in the morning and thought my air bed was going down. It turned out that it was floating!
This is where we slept…
Most of it does seem to be normal programming. There are some GPIO examples, but they look like stand alone examples.
I didn’t think about using a Linux VM for some reason. I may transfer my Ubuntu Studio VM to this machine and use that for programming too. I realised this week that I haven’t actually played a game properly for a couple of years, so that’s one less reason to stick with Windows. Using the VM will help me get used to a distro before I switch.
Just one caution, I’m not sure which Python the book uses.
The free first edition uses 2.x, but that’s obviously not the current book. It says it uses it because it’s what’s going to be in your Linux distro though, and the Ubuntu variants I’ve used still use 2.x. The only downside is, the book is geared towards using a Pi, which I don’t have. I’m downloading a VirtualBox VM and the Raspbian ISO file now though to see if that’s any good.
Re Tippons original post, while browsing around WH Smith I came across a small bookazine “Python The complete Manual” published by Future Press £7.99. This manual covers all the Tippon requeste:
Thanks Ed, it sounds great 🙂
I’ve just found what looks like it on the Future Publishing site for £4.99, or the first edition for free through archive.org. Is this the right book?
https://archive.org/details/Python_The_Complete_Manual_First_ED_2016_UK
If it is, I’ll buy the 5th edition, and put the free first edition on my phone. I usually get about an hour of free time when I drop Alice off to nursery, so having it on my phone means I’m more likely to read it regularly 🙂
It’s dipping into the minus figures here. A friend posted a video of snow in the Brecon Beacons this week, but thankfully that hasn’t travelled the few miles to us yet.
Sorry, I saw your post through the forums Most Recent view, and didn’t realise it was a Linux question.
In the first screenshot just clicking on the Name bar near the top of the dialogue box should do it Just left click once.
I’m a little confused too, but I think you mean the file window that lets you choose the attachments. If so, When you get the screen similar to the one I’ve added below, just right click a blank space in it and click Sort By. Change the selection from Descending to Ascending and you should be right.
It’s not just Google that needs help – there’s no photo there 😀
