I can’t help with a paperwhite device sorry, as I’m in the same camp as Ed with the Kindle. One suggestion I would make though, is if you’re going to be buying more books, make sure that they can be synced between any other devices you may use.
Amazon syncs between Kindle devices and the Kindle app, but only for books bought through their store. You can add books from other stores to their devices, but they don’t sync. It’s a pain if you have an unexpected half hour free and only have your phone, for example.
I use Gmail for pretty much everything now, including my domains, but the last time I set one up was when it was free through Google. I need to look into Gmail for business if I ever get around to selling my photos.

Sorry to hear about your nan Lee. Try to remember that you’re not alone, we’re all here on the other side of the screen. If there’s anything I can do to help, please just let me know.
I am told HDR is the next ‘great thing’ but to me it sounds like too much marketing and too little substance to justify a change.
When it’s done properly, HDR can be amazing. The problem is it rarely seems to be done properly. Have a look at the second cityscape example here:
The 25 pin shown there is (as it says) a (parallel) printer port.
Yep, I’ve just compared you photo to an old Pentium 4 motherboard I’ve got. https://photos.app.goo.gl/gueZijThUqDKmv4E8
Looking at the picture, and your description of what he wants, I’m guessing that he wants to print directly from the device. I may be wrong, but I don’t think it will work. I imagine that the device is too old. As it has a USB plug to connect it to a computer though, that may be the best way forwards – transfer the data to a computer and print from there.
Thanks 🙂
Thanks Nolan 🙂
I’ve got a possible chest infection and maybe a flare up of the Vasculitis to deal with first, which may result in a hospital visit. Once it’s all sorted, I’ll have a chat with my GP. If I do get admitted, I might have a chat with someone there, especially as it’s in Cardiff and Vale, and they seem to know what they’re doing 😛
Great news Bob 🙂
I’d just take some shots and let google stitch them together.
I don’t trust Google Photos anymore, the results haven’t been very good. This was its attempt at a panorama, and Photoshop gave me something closer to Dave’s pictures.

It’s hard to get a blary photo out of any top end devive from the last 4 years.
The camera on the Honor 9 gives blurred photos regularly. The app is awful. The minimum shutter speed that’s recommended for a camera held by hand is 1/25th of a second, and that’s assuming that you’ve got steady hands and the other settings won’t let you go higher. Anything slower than that and you’re pretty much guaranteed to get some blur. The Honor 9’s app generally sets the shutter speed to 1/17th of a second, even if the other settings give you plenty of wiggle room (e.g. it does that at ISO 100 and 200). Manually setting the shutter speed cures it instantly, and the other settings auto adjust to compensate, but then you can’t use the other features like burst mode. It’s very annoying.
The camera you’ve posted looks good. The fact that it’s got RAW support and the 4K burst mode is handy, especially if you’ll be taking photos of anything fast moving. Imagine someone doing a jump down the skatepark – you wouldn’t be able to ask them to slow down while you get the perfect shot 😉 RAW gives you a bit of extra wiggle room for things like colour correction and red eye, rather than waiting for the double flash of red eye reduction modes. I’ve got my camera set up to shot RAW and jpeg, and the difference a bit of tweaking can do is amazing.
The biggest downside though, as Dave suggests, is the interchangeable lenses. I love my DSLR, and I love the range of photography it lets me do. I find that I don’t use it very often though, especially if I’m taking photos of the kids. I use my phone and the burst mode more than I use the DSLR. Have a think about what kind of photography you’re interested in, and whether you can carry a few extra lenses and change them in the conditions that you want to shoot. e.g. if there are going to be lots of kids running around, do you want to risk changing lenses, or if you’re out in the cold, will your hands be flexible enough.
Also, check whether the various filters can be turned off, and if they can be turned off permanently. My Honor 9 has a beauty filter built in for the selfie camera, and it turns on every time you turn the selfie camera on. It’s ruined some great photos where Alice has been playing with my phone.
Like I say, the camera looks great, just make sure that it can do what you want it to do 🙂
Go for it, and good luck 🙂
caused by a Kodi freeze up when told to shut (Kodi) down.
As an aside, don’t try to exit Kodi while it’s scanning for new items. I’ve found that this almost always causes either a lock up or a crash, especially on an Android based system. Either wait for it to finish, or cancel the scan.
I just love the look on the face of doctors and ambulance crews that haven’t met her before whenever they ask what conditions she has or what med’s she is on. I keep a list of both constantly updated and several copies to hand.
I always love the question ‘Do you have any medical conditions, or take any medications?’ The wife and I usually look at each other and laugh before saying, yep, one or two, then handing over an A4 page of info ?
When I go to hospital appointments and they ask for prescriptions, I hand over the surgery scrip printout and I give a ‘new’ medico a sheet with all my conditions written down: it’s quicker that way!
I keep a medical sheet on my computer, and saved through Google Drive so that it’s on my phone too. When I remember to print it, I keep a paper copy in my wallet. On it I have:
Full name a date of birth
Full address
My main hospital and hospital patient number, and my NHS number
List of meds and doses with times e.g. Omeprazole 40mg Daily
Brief list of my health issues
Allergies and what they do to me
Blood type and the fact that I’m a registered donor
List of my medical contacts – doctors, nurses, transplant team, and GP
Emergency contacts and their relationship to meThis has covered me so far, including the time I was taken off a cruise and rushed to a French hospital on my honeymoon ?
Ryan, this matches the explanations of both my gsons, who are at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Funnily enough, when the ‘quiz*’ was posted a while back that gives you an idea of whether you’re on the spectrum, I got a result suggesting that I was. It wasn’t particularly high, but it’s been sitting at the back of my mind. A few of the questions about things like socialising and shyness got me, because if I’d answered when I was school age, I probably would have got a much higher score. I worked in a nightclub when I was 19, and was forced out of my shell. Looking back, I’ve learned loads of coping skills to get around my ‘problem areas’ (not the right phrasing, but my brain’s not working properly today. No offence intended if it’s a bad phrase).
After PM was diagnosed I mentioned it in a conversation with my wife and my mother as I’d only really heard of people being diagnosed when they were young (not that Nolan’s old 😉 ). Without hesitating my mother said that she’s wondered for a while whether I’m on the spectrum, and Ellen agreed. She worked in a school for years, so saw what it was like when people started recognising autism and diagnosing it properly, rather than just labelling the kids as naughty or sending them away to other schools. I’d finished school before any proper understanding came in, so missed that boat. I keep forgetting to ask my mother why she didn’t mention it before now.
T’other is a big lad, doesn’t give a damn how he is dressed, but also values accuracy and exactness in everything he does.
Yep, I’m like that too. Very frustrating at times.
*Not the right word, but the meds are kicking in and making my brain fuzzy again.
Having watched his hands fly over a keyboard and hardly pause to use the mouse in a blur of movement, I often give silent thanks to the brainwave that had me building his first computer, trying to solve his communication, spelling and writing.
I can still remember the difference in my English homework once ‘proper’ computers found their way to school. My handwriting has always been awful. I’ve got to struggle to slow my thoughts down enough for my hand to be able to get it on paper, if that makes sense. Once I got used to typing, I could type at a much closer speed to the words forming in my head, and everything was suddenly clearer.
There were three or four of us computer geeks in school, and it was a point of pride that we could type faster than the IT teachers and the typing teacher. She wouldn’t let us do a typing test to prove it though, as we hadn’t taken typing as a class ??
Thanks Dan 🙂
I realised earlier that I’ve set up two VMs – one for Pi-hole and one for tinyMediaManager. I thought I’d used a snapshot to be able to roll back, but apparently I did both. I’m checking through my old Windows installation to make sure I’ve got all my passwords and random files, then I’ll have the SSD ready to wipe.
As I’ve got to reinstall at least one set of my programs anyway, I might try out some other distros on the actual hardware and see what I prefer. I’d switched to Ubuntu, as it seems to have the most support and ready made guides, but I’m still not getting on with the menu. I can’t decide whether to go for Mint or Ubuntu Studio, or maybe another option.
My pen drive distro has stopped working, so rather than mess around with something I rarely used, I’ll probably reinstall that too. It’s hardly ever used in anger, but I prefer to have it handy 🙂
Fair enough. I was hoping to avoid having to reinstall and set everything back up, but it will be good practice. Thanks Ed 🙂
That’s brilliant 🙂
A man with no arms and no legs was lying on the beach sunbathing when the two most beautiful women he’d ever seen set out their towels just a few feet away. The women smiled at the man and kept winking at him while oiling each other’s bodies. After a while the women approached the man and asked him
‘Have you ever seen naked breasts before?’
To which the man shyly shook his head no. The women removed their bikini tops, exposing their stunning bodies to the shocked man. He couldn’t believe his luck.
‘Have you ever kissed two women?’ they asked next.
After a nervous gulp, the man replied, no, he hadn’t.
The two women gave the man the longest, most sensual kisses he’d ever experienced in his life. This was the best day he’d ever experienced, it couldn’t get much better.
One of the women leaned down and whispered breathily in his ear
‘Have you ever been screwed?’
To which the man replied ‘No’
‘Well, you are now, the tide’s coming in!’
