        Thanks Nolan 🙂

I’ve been going every four weeks for the last two years or so, I seem to be in the middle of a flare up that’s not behaving. I’ve been lucky in that we get there before visiting starts, so can usually get a place on the ground floor. If I’ve been really bad though, I’ve had to get Ellen to drop me off around the back of the hospital so that I can cut through while she goes to park. I’m quite lucky that the renal clinic is near the doors, otherwise I’d be screwed on a bad day.

Just installing GTA 5. So glad my rig still has a ROM drive. No less than 7 DVDs with compressed files with around 8GB per disc and after updates and final file size ??? GB

I’ve just checked my installation, and it’s 98.1GB!

Who is your ISP? I’ve just switched to BT for full fibre, and I’m getting similar problems. Rather than not connecting at all though, I’m getting much slower connections.

All of my wifi devices seem to be doing the same – I make a new connection and everything works perfectly. I get 340Mbps on a 300 Mbps connection. If anything sleeps, or is shut down, or even goes out of range temporarily, the speed drops to 60 or below.

At the moment I’ve only got one wired connection, and I haven’t stopped, so I haven’t had a chance to look into it further.

                  Hey Bob 🙂

Sorry, I’ve only just seen this thread, I’m not on here much at the moment.

Sorry to hear that it’s terminal. I hope you’re doing ok otherwise, and are enjoying yourself where possible.

I don’t know what to say, other than you’ll be missed, so I’m going to echo what Nolan said:

I consider us all lucky to have known you and I hope to still know you for a while yet.

P.S. To end with a little bit of silliness, that crazy Welsh bastard is Nolan, and this crazy Welsh bastard is Ryan, not that anyone ever gets us mixed up 😉

I did a quick signal check the other day to see exactly how bad the drop is. Standing in the living room I got -30dBm on the Android app Wifi Analyzer, but going the other side of the wall it dropped straight to -50dBm. I was less than 2ft from the router. Going through to the bedrooms sees it drop even more (the living room and kitchen are upstairs here). I’m in the office now and it’s about -65dBm. The phone is currently connecting, but the computer gets flaky. Ellen’s laptop doesn’t want to know. There are quite a few black spots around the house.

When I’m on wifi I can remote into the media PC upstairs, but it’s literally a case of click the mouse, wait a minute or two, then see the result. When it’s cabled it’s like sitting in front of a slow computer – sometimes there’s a little bit of lag, but you don’t really notice it.

The phone socket has to be in the upstairs living room, as there’s nowhere for it to come in on the landing, and I don’t want it in the bedrooms. I tried the TP-Link adaptor on the landing by the bedrooms, so pretty much over the office, and it was great. It was in just the right position to pick up where the router drops off. The powerline network doesn’t work though, so it was dropping out more than the wifi to the router was.

I could probably run a cable from the upstairs living room to the attic, and with a bit of luck it would work, but if I’m going to run wires through walls, I’d rather get it done right and not have to worry about it again (especially now that I’ve bought the kit    )

My home install has stalled for the moment. TT messed me around again last week, and claimed that I registered a fault on the line, which I didn’t. That’s opened a process on their end that means I have to give them 30 days to resolve it. It’s a load of crap, but I gave them this week to see if they could fix my speeds before I switch away. They still haven’t responded, so it’s complaints to the CEO time. Time to lean on the ‘I’m disabled and my wife’s a nurse’ line.

On top of that, I can’t run the networking cables either. We’ve got a balcony on the front of the house, and it was left to rot by the previous owner. We haven’t been any better. We had a friend’s company out to give us a quote to repair it in the week, and one of them put his foot straight through it. They went downstairs to check the supports, and a chunk of one came away in my friend’s hand. Hopefully it’s just that support, as it’s not attached to anything else. The next one over goes into the wall and holds up most of the balcony, so if that’s rotten, the whole thing has to come down even if it’s just to replace the single beam. We’re looking into the options now, so I can’t start running cables past it.

Synology’s C2 service is just another destination in a Hyper Backup task. You need to create a C2 account first, there’s a 30 day free trial. Hyper Backup guide here, video guide here that uses C2 as an example. It’s all pretty straightforward but explains the various options, like smart versioning.

                          Thanks Dave :good:

Sorry I’m a bit slow replying. I jinxed myself this time. I realised last night that after a rearrange in the office, I hadn’t turned the Synology back on. I turned it on and it beeped like crazy for ages while I was trying to log in. One of the hard drives has started to fail 😥

After a few hours of moving files around I managed to get the most important stuff onto the external drive too, and am now just waiting for the replacement drive to arrive, hopefully on Monday.

I’m tempted to format the lot and start again, but making sure that I definitely do it properly this time.

Backup to an external drive or another Synology is easy and there’s a cheap offsite cloud backup service available

Run the cables while you have the spare time and good weather. Cabling always seems to take me 30% longer than I estimate.

Built the Ryzen 5’s today. Still amazes me how fast they are with an NVMe. It’s currently copying from 2 x USB drives, one of which is USB3, to the spinner and installing Office 2019 on the SSD. Not breaking sweat.

My PSU has been a bit flaky since the new build and graphics card, so I put the spinner in a USB2 caddy while I waited to get a new PSU. With a few small exceptions (running VMs for example), I’ve barely noticed the difference.

OK, a kill two birds with one stone product: the wall port with Ethernet and Wifi Ubiquiti with a free cloud controller and set up link TP-Link EAP225-Wall Omada AC1200 free software but needs a host PC link Both only need a single Ethernet cable. I will be using the Ubiquiti in a new project for a mates physio clinic refurb, but the Omada dedicated controller is quite reasonable so…

                                  Thanks Dave :rose:

Ouch! I always forget how much decent wifi kit costs

On the bright side, Ellen’s already okayed it, so I can’t get put in the doghouse, and I told her the price for the Ubiquiti kit, as this guy I know who knows lots about networks is always going on about how good they are    :yahoo:

The only downside is that because of the extra cost, the wifi kit will have to wait until next month. I’ve just got to decide now whether to run the cables now, or wait until next month and do everything in one go. I’ve got the old Talktalk router, so I can pop that into the garage and check the signal, but checking the other side of the house will be a bit awkward. The TP-Link powerline adapter has decided that it doesn’t want to work properly, and shuts the wifi off randomly. It should be an easy fix, but we’ll see.

On the bright side, I’ve run the cable downstairs temporarily, and everything’s working as it should

That’s odd, the link I sent myself was to this cat 5e cable:

                                    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00I71B0O4/

                                    I don’t know how I linked the cat6

Thanks for the replies, it’s good to know I’m on the right track for once  I forgot to mention, I’ve got a cable tester from when I was supposed to do the old house (12 years and counting… )

My thinking at the moment is to have the garage as the hub, as it’s under two of the bedrooms and is cold in the winter. I’m hoping that as it’s cooler, the media system and any networking equipment will warm it in winter, and be cooler in the summer, plus there won’t be the noise from the media system in the living room.

We’ve got a split level house with two living rooms, so I thought four sockets in the upstairs main living room, and two in the downstairs room, then another four sockets in the downstairs office. The office shares a wall with the garage, so I can just go through the wall for them. I thought one cable per socket for the living rooms, rather than switches etc. so that there’s an element of future proofing (I know, I know). We’ve got a 4K TV upstairs, and anything new will be 4K going forwards, plus I’ll need some sort of wifi in there for the phones and laptops, so there’ll be less chance of any bottlenecks with the extra cabling. Possibly a wifi point in the garage to overcome the current signal issues, but it depends on where the router ends up.

We’re looking to switch to FTTP if I can get any sense out of Talktalk, but as it will need a new entry point into the house, I thought I could put that in the garage and share it from there. A cable or two from the garage to the attic to finish off, and then a wifi device or two up there too (it’s a wide house). If the wifi from the attic covers the living room, then I can just use a switch in the living room for the Xbox and other consoles.

I’ve just realised as I’m typing it out that if I move the router downstairs, I’ll only need one pair of sockets in the upstairs living room. The router *should* give a wifi signal to the office and bedrooms, so I might only need a wifi device in one of the living rooms (one’s above the other), depending on whether either of them reach the kitchen and bathroom upstairs. An extender to the garden would be nice, but that’s a future upgrade, in the same vein as an attic conversion and the cabling that will go with it.

So, have I missed anything? :mail:

I’ll be ringing Talktalk to get this changed. I can’t even see Talktalk’s pricing, they’re hiding behind a phone number, so I can see me cancelling. Three have lost my trust though, as I’ve got a Three broadband contract set up and active at this address, but actually in my father’s house about a mile away, and today, after over a month of questioning why I can’t set up a new contract for any similar postcodes, they’ve told me that broadband isn’t available in this area. No reply since telling them that I’ve already got one account…

I’m quite fancying the Vodafone and Apple TV setup, but I need to have a proper look at what shows are on it that I can’t already get, and what TT will do for me. I’d be happy to stay with them for now if they switch me to FTTP, as it should get rid of all the problems I’ve been having, and will fix them for the future too. Like I say though, the lack of pricing info and having to talk to a sales person puts me right off.

It won’t install here. It tried on my main machine and crashed, then automatically rolled back, and hasn’t even tried on anything else. It’s got the pending message on them all, but hasn’t gone any further.
