ive still got the G1 somewhere, im not sure if Realpi will even run on it. fingers crossed. well lets see if it boots, i do know that will boot without a battery iirc, so ill have to nick the ps3 controller charger to charge it. mini usb that bad boy. all 700Mhz single core of it.

A reinstall wouldn’t take long as you’d just install ten , and there isn’t that many updates. But if it ain’t broke.

I do like a periodic reinstall though, but I always do a clone as soon as it’s all up-to-date and my software is  Installed and also up-to-date.

That way I’m 6 months tome I just load the clone, and only need to update the 6montjs and make a fresh clone, always keeping 2 pervious clones . Just in case. It makes doing an install take 30 mins instead of a whole night or longer.

Though I broke my cycle when I went to 10 and haven’t made any clones as my old version of clonzilla no longer worked.

The next time o do an install I will be cloning it, and getting back to my old roitine . Also I keep all data saperate mostly in the cloud or sensitive stuff on a 2 x USB HDD for archive, and isn’t thumb drives for what I’m currently working on, so I don’t need to do backups , I can just wipe my machines and bi up and running quickly.

But with 10 I’ve not noticed any slowdown .

Do Intel still do that,or a version of, that really cheap brillent pentium they had out about 4 years ago. It’s name slides me, bit it was about £50 with fan, and was a stonker.

Iirc it was a stunted i5 2500 or similar, but still hit high , it may of been a non mititheaded quad core. So in real life it made little diffence to everyday tasks.

Probaly remembering it all wrong , but it definitely existed.

DaveR is your man for all things PC hardware, he is now over here, so will likely be along soon.

There is no real savings anymore in building , and most people would be better buying a pretty built system from one of the places that let you configure. You also get a decent warranty all from one place, and you know it all works.

Saying that, I won’t be buying a pretty built system when I’m next in the market. I never did build to save money. I loved the weeks of fine tuning what I wanted and all the research, all the way though to the moment it [doesn’t ] post lol .

I use to love clicking through the old mm adds that was just pages of tiny text components. Who didn’t make their dream build out of them lists. Then have to settle for what your wallet could stetch to. (Plus 20%). Then tell the wife it was only half the cost

I had the origanal Nexus 7, it aged fast.  Not an apple fan, but the iPad 2 just won’t die, and it functions well enough.

I’ve tried to like tablet s but they have never stuck with me. So the most amazing part of our iPad 2 story is that it was bought me from an us air force base,at a reduced cost, I never liked it, so my them 2 year old girl took custody of it, and had used it almost daily since. She cracked it about a year ago, bit it’s still fine and holds 7 hours battery. She is now 8.

It is like her comfort balnket. I had a scrappy teadybear! Oh times change.

Hi John, we too had a nner of 360s (see op) and the ps3 and now got a 4, on all that time, my fingers rig has had one new gfx card update.

I still use the same CPU i7 920 , same PSU (doinled the ram last year ) it did have a HD5850 in last year I finally swapped that out for a gtx970 at a cost of £250.

You are right, historically PC gaming was expensive, however hardware (bar GPU) hasn’t moved fast enough to warrant an upgrade. I game at 1080p so the same as what the new consoles do, at better framrates. Just, but bet in mind the PC cost me £600 in 2008 and I’ve since pit in a GPU and sum ram , total cost £290. The ps3 cost me £550 and the 4 was 400. The cost on Xboxes (without getting a one) has to close to a grand I think we bought 4 in total, and had a couple swapped out for red ring of death. At no cost.

So when you really them up, they have all cost about a grand each  over the last ten years. (Could of bought  car with thst 3k!) . Point PC gaming isn’t that expensive. And of ms just sold an Xbox PSU for Windows gaming, for about £200, match it with any half decent CPU from the last previous ten years, (imaging ffw 5 years) , it could be a viable and lucrative option for ms.

The idea only dawned one while typing the last post out, but that is where that may be going, with this Windows Xbox store.

Steam is a great store, and revolutionised PC gaming. Before steam PC gaming was a pita. It still is to some extent, but so much simpler now.

I do think the next consoles won’t be the (semi) consoles of today, bit more a thinclient set up, with Sony servers runnkng their stuff, and ms will do similar , but I can’t help thinking ms is going to attempt to turn Xbox players into pc players via their one windows unitive. They will be trying to eat into steams lunch, and they have a good shot. If they can get all 360 forward to the last  xbox one release in the Windows store , so it can run on pc.

By then, about 5 years time, even the modest PC will play Xbox one tripe A releases. This has just come to me, bit imagine if the next Xbox is the Xbox GPU. They could flog one Evey 2 years , ant zero cost to them, just rebrand a £200 , think the 970 of today then, rebadge and licence it, and sell all games via Windows (Xbox) store.

That would be interesting. All the pointers point to Sony going thin client, so an interesting battle that could be, but both want a curated controlled ecosystem.

My i7 920 paired with the gtx970, handles all I can chuck at it at 1080p. The only games it struggles with is transport world builder games, that are very CPU heavy. All it is is 1000s of spreadsheets continulously churning, bit the 920 can stuggel once world’s get complex.

But the likes of GTA it’s fine at the medium settings, and GTA there is not alot of different in grafical quality from med to high. There is a big jump from low to medium, that can be stained quite cheaply, but to get that last 5% in eye candy means major investment.

Project racing is also fine so have all my latest titles covered, and the old dog just keeps working. If I games alot I’d replace it as I think it’s a bit of a drinker , but as I go through fits and starts, didn’t hardly game stall this autumn, usuay my resume of year, I didn’t even see a price jump in my electric bill, I’ve seen it go up a thrid when I’m get in the grove.

Every year for the last 3 , iclve said the 920 will be moved to pastures new, bit each December it’s still here.

I recall buying the 920 on its release about 08ish, and a few on the forum said, don’t buy that socket there is no upgrade path. little did they know it was never going to become obselete.

I was referring to trafic lee. I just pasted a simple YouTube URL  link into the Intel thread , and auto generated a embedded YouTube box, which is neat. However can you have a peek at the video and see if the lip sync is way off for you. If it is , turn that feature off as it makes it pointless and some users  won’t know to double tap the top of the box to get YouTube to open it up.

Linus tech tips done a video comparing the flagship of each gen going back  10 years and it highlights exponentially shrinking returns of upgrading, and the fact that 2013 chip is much better (hp wise) over the new one.

If you have lipsync issues double click on the title in the top left of the video , this will take you direct to YouTube to view it.
