I had an interesting ENT visit today. There is still evidence of reflux so more will have to be done to control that part of the issue, however there is also an ENT issue with my nose. His first question after a video look was have I ever had any nose operations? So I now have an action plan and will see him again next year when he might decide on an operation. He endorsed the Vaseline ‘if you had not said that had been started, I would tell you to start now’ and I will have to alternate it with another treatment to see if this start to improve. He is also testing for a condition rather like one of my wife’s issues.

So Bob, the problems keep grinding my way, still the plumbing issues are finally all closed off. The last one was a brand new ‘I’ll have the more expensive one with the faulty olive, not the cheap one with probably OK olives‘. I only found the issue when I just would not seal up properly. Life just keeps going that way for the moment.

We managed a pleasant meal out, tonight, that was a bright light on a cold dark evening.

Bob, you have my sympathy that is clearly a long lived and far more acute issue, as are many of the others you currently suffer. I know from my wife’s state and my own lesser one that the sufferer ends up feeling that you don’t just want treatment you want solutions. Sadly no solution appears to be anywhere to be found with many long term problems.

I’ve made use of Olbas a lot in the past along with steaming, but it did not touch my issue. There is no very polite way to say this but the issue is nasal clots which build up during the night and sometimes during the day, they usually have to be cleared out as best I can, but this has not been an issue since the Vaseline therapy.

Apparently the low humidity desiccates nasal passages with less good effects.

We had to use humidifiers for the babies during the dry season in Japan, one was severely premature though not any more now! They machines are still in the loft having last been used when the children were ill years ago. The GP came, took one look and decided that they were better off here than the set up they could get in hospital.

Ed, Steve, Bob, Yes I take omeprazole  to manage gastric issues though they can be stirred up by poor choices-by-mouth. Since using the Vaseline things have considerably improved in the nasal region, morning blockages are a thing of the past. It could be that my sinus issues are connected to erratic gastric stability, but pinning it down is a challenge that has defeated past medical interventions over nearly 50 years. The sore throat could be a result of accumulated damage though the recent investigations suggested only minor damage low down and not in the cough area.

At least Vaseline is not an antibiotic!

Yes Ed I was suggesting something like that.

I also had a left lung infection a while back, it was painful and caused me to go to the doctor at the time.  Had the full TV camera and other works, without sedation as I had another urgent appointment in the afternoon, (ever been tickled from the inside?)

The cause was suggested to be nasal issues and I now take a range of tablets. However I still have the cough and sore throat and will finally see an ear nose and throat person next week. I have measured that the air inside the house is very dry i.e. low humidity. Then I had a mega nose bleed while I was sorting out the plumbing under a kitchen sink perfect timing – not. Drop the job to fee hands and half a kitchen roll, half a loo roll, two new red sinks a red back splash for each and a nice(?) new red floor I decided enough was enough.

After finding that low humidity can encourage some of the effects I have I started to insert Vaseline into my nose to keep the membranes from drying out. The nose is noticeably more comfortable, I still have a sore throat and cough but hey, any progress is good progress. I do have a couple of ageing humidifiers so that could be a next step, but do not want to cause damp issues.

Sometimes it is just hard to win.

D-Dan, Wearing my conspiracy theory hat could there be more of a connection between all of these things? Is there something else that is affecting all three issues, like your general health making you prey to those other issues?

                The ‘hat’ off again now.

Yes these things are a bummer, and it sounds a bit worse than my wife’s case. Sent home from the Hospital at the beginning of the month as she ‘was too ill for the investigation planned’. She is a bit better now so hopefully it can go ahead next week*.

Hips are more intrusive so it is important that you are well enough and without any infections. Hopefully she can be cleared up in the near future.

                  * A bit better = not throwing up and coughing all night.

We have one of those vacuum jacket style Thermos like tea pots which can keep me well stocked up with about 10 mugs of tea per day from three or four brews.

They are 400 ml mugs so about 4 litres per day of usually pretty weak tea.

I think my kidneys work… even if nothing else does.

About the only reason for a self reading meter is that they cut out the ‘should have gone to Specsavers meter reader’ who overrode my accurate reading with one that months later has still not been reached.

The current pre SMETS II SMART meters are about as useless as the meter readers on Specsavers bypass. Some of the installers appear to be in the same league, due to fires following their visits, it is probably good to hold off until the process and equipment are  reliable.

I have struggled to find much scope for further on ‘site demand management’. Though slow boil kettles and slow toasters are starting to drive me nuts. Replacing old  bulbs with LEDs could make sense where their use suggests a payback. However, I would still need to replace well over 40 traditional bulbs, most of which have been in place for more than 25 years. This suggests infrequent use and thus a very slow payback rate, probably greater than my life expectancy. Clothes drying uses a  gas drier which is much cheaper than electricity.

John, I started this before your latest message arrived. I suggest a formal complaint is in order.

Bob, it could be a related condition to Barrett’s Oesophagus or to another condition that has been suggested, but it appears to be different to both. While a hiatus hernia not only exists and is known to be increasing in size, that is also far lower than the immediate issue of a pouch , perhaps together with some as yet, unknown other issues. Apparently this is in what appears to have been a baffling presentation. The results of next week’s investigation is awaited with baited breath by several different locations, not least by my wife, those blood pressure has also been a recent concern following a sharp increase. The treatment has been doubled so hopefully some progress will be made by that effort.

Yes Bob thank you and like you I regularly send them into the company(s). Usually we use about 2,100~<2,500 units per quarter, but in September ‘they’ read the meter. I did not notice at the time (*explanation follows) but they had a reading that suggested about 3,000 units more then normal i.e.  well over 5,000 units.

*Over that period our daughter had a change of her medicines and suffered some serious repercussions, we had daily support visits and 24 hour contact numbers to call so you could get some idea things were ‘lively’. My wife has an obstruction in her throat and a few other issues and I had a spinal injection – so leccy bills were not top of my action plan. at the time

It all came to a head last week, when I was wondering why a change of supplier was not going well. I had given the new supplier three meter readings over a period of about 4 weeks, all three were about 3,000 units less than bozo bill the meter reader had guessed in September, so now the mess has to be sorted out. Phase two of battle will be held this week, its supposed to be on Wednesday when my wife will go into hospital for a delayed second investigation of her throat blockage issue. She went in a couple of weeks ago but was sent home as they said she was ‘too ill’ to do anything with her throat’… She has a persistent cough, trouble eating and episodes of sickness, so not so easy for essential throat works.

There are several things in play here. It is common even for Japanese companies to have goods made by other specialists. Sometimes it is a way to get one part of a conglomerate to keep working by supplying bits to another company, possibly not even part of the same group. I used to know a regional manager for Sumitomo who surprised me by the tales of contracts he had assembled to sell major contracts for e.g. a Mitsubishi main contractor because Sumitomo had a factory in danger of going onto short time, if it did not sell its specialised product.

CD/DVD drives were made by one or two factories at one time but appeared under a range of names and so on across the board. Inter-company Japanese contracts are like nothing you have ever seen unless you have seen a Japanese contract. Typically it might run to three or four lines which basically say, ‘We trust you to make what we want’ and that is that.

That a TV, or anything else was actually built by other than the name on the front is no surprise at all, it even happens with cars as well.

In part my question was the result of an error, not of my making. A recent electricity bill was higher than expected and I had taken it at face value. (Both my wife and daughter have had seriously restricting health issues for a number of weeks, I just though oh well it must be the air source heat pump. Then I started to change supplier and wondered why I had a meter reading issue. Simple answer the meter reader in September had over read the meter by about 3,000 units – doh.

I was wondering if the solar could give me effectively free juice for the heater-cooler. Getting a genuine payback has always looked to be an issue, so a cost reduction, in effect a prepay might be of greater value to me. If power goes up in price as the Green lot hope, then any saving (even not including the FIT) would be a bonus. 12,000Kwh over 5 years is about 2,500 per annum so could be about 20% of our annual bill allowing for a downward rounding error (and without meter reader errors!). The economics are still looking a bit shaky on those figures at a few hundred pounds per annum about perhaps £200~400. A ten year life cycle (mine, rather than anything else might only repay a third to a half of the installation costs making it appears more of a gamble.

Thank you, that gives me rather more food for night time indigestion!

                                    For just an instant you almost made me nostalgic for the days of working in London, then I thought;

                                    No never again.

A neighbour visits London’s medical services once or twice a year with her disabled child. It takes them days to recover. It is an experience I hope never to go through again. London’s putrid transport makes the it awful for everyone. I sympathise with those whose limitations, physical or mental, make it even worse and for whom there is no escape.

I agree that Quantum is a much more slick affair, though moving the refresh button caused me a few obvious moments of hunting without initial success. Swapping windows is now very fast – I tend to have at least 6 on the go so notice that sort of thing.

Amazingly Google goes a poor job of matching journeys to actual routes, if I walk to a local hospital it gives up halfway there and shows me coming back again. However, it can locate my G4 phone to a room at home.

Steve, my Moto G4 Play is unlocked and has been used on Tesco, when it got the February 2017 security update which was a big one, but it still runs Android 6.0.1 Since putting the EE SIM into the thing it is stuck right where it was. I agree that maybe it should update via WiFi, I thought so as it spends about 23.5 hours a day on WiFi,* mostly doing nothing, but apparently it will not. I may try a Tesco SIM again to see if that does something magic, but will not hold my breath!

I never use even a 10th, come to that 100th of my EE data allowance so it could even do the update over the air if we had good service at home

(Daughter’s almost unused Samsung* got Android 7.x months ago, its understood by EE.)
