Thank you PM, I will speak to the GP on Wednesday about the issue but I wonder if the physiotherapist will have access to the sonagrapher’s report that pointed out the exact issue or whether they will just get some wishy washy crap ‘please see this patient’, etc. I fell rather p1 s2 off one way and another.

Off topic but this new 5G looks like it could kill off land line. Or definatley shake things up.

Not at the prices quoted the other day when the launch dates were being talked about. A Tiny allowance for huge money would make it a non-starter for me. The question of if it will arrive for this area in my life time is another matter. Voice is at best flaky at the moment, so much so callers are usually told to call the landline if they would like an answered call.

I have not done any programming for a long while now. The first thing I did was reprogramme an up to 32 position training simulator in assembler through a 6 byte memory window – I learned to value the save option on that one.

I inevitably did some Lotus 123 macro coding, I wrote macros to write the code I wanted in a spreadsheet. The local support outfit wondered where the result had been bought in from, I would not try that any more.

MS compiled Quick basic was useful, I did many quite large on line analysis jobs with that doing the data collection and formatting into a more standardised data system. It was then parsed and reported using Clipper.

All was self taught and no, none of it would be my recommended way to go forward. I did document everything, but I am pretty certain no one ever looked again at any of the schedules. It was all good fun and achieved the results I needed at the time.

Bob, I understand what you are saying. I wrote earlier ‘That is the real point, it must meet what the user wants‘. I have always had some slight doubts about second hand, especially when am item is battery powered with a fixed life battery. I accept it may well be a less than completely supportable position. Both my wife and daughter have Samsung devices and all singing and dancing they appear to be though A5/6 items. Neither use more than about 5% of the ‘features’ though the devices are substantially more responsive than my ‘beater’ their whole operation is very alien so there would be a sharp learning curve, which I sometimes to climb to help though their needs are very modest, texting and Google maps to track congestion are about all.

I also wonder why the previous user gave up, was there an issue?

Graham, the kids in question are 6 years old so perhaps about 5 years off of their secondary schooling. Not only would any laptop be unlikely to last a whole lot longer than that, it would probably be overkill and confusing now, if powerful and capable enough to be intended to aim for long term secondary school  use. That is why I suggested trying to pin down what the school plan is so that people can understand both the needs now and the likely shape of the future developments plan.

I suspect that the commission jockeys have some sort of incentive to sell other makers’ phones in what is an increasingly cut throat shrinking volumes market. Other’s on here appear to have resolved the issue of application management and the playstore/no playstore probably non issue.

Your comments sound right, it must have been about 1975 if I fit the calendar the right way round in my memory. It was one sick machine, it needed two shafts at the front with Dobbin or any good shire horse to do the work.

I was at my granddaughter’s school a few days ago. They have a superabundance of small simple laptops there and as a just 6 year old (her birthday was the day before) she was showing great confidence using the machine she grabbed to show off. Most of the time she was doing free form exploring of its apparently limited offering.

As Dave said I wonder if getting a good understanding of what the school uses and what their plans are for the next stage would give you a better guide.

I am not the best guide but PM I tend to side with you.

Bob, once I have something from the lower end of the market that is it for support anyway. To be honest I rarely, in fact never see any benefit from the laboriously updated items. My Moto 4G Play is now just over 2 years old, it drives me nuts sometimes, so should it go bad at some point I would think about replacing it with another low end item that meets my limited need. That is the real point, it must meet what the user wants, there is so much choice that ‘near enough’ probably is not ‘good enough’. My eldest daughter breaks her phones about every 10~12 months, but she has been happy with a string of Sony phones. They were outside of my need/price profile. So good luck once you are settled, but do not look back.

Thanks to you all, Dave’s ‘paste special’ does work and frees up the spell checker in the new doc. What I simply cannot understand there is absolutely NO Welsh at all in the Word doc yet the s/checker only allows me to s/check in Welsh – as far as I can see/check ALL relevant language for this doc is set to English. Richard – ” .. Is the option to detect the language being used automatically ticked? ..’ err dunno, I’m not certain how I’d get to there – I have looked at grammar and s/checker in the options in the doc itself and they all point to English.

Sorry for the delay responding, it is found under:

                              Review

                              Set language

and is a tick box on the language page.

I am not sure that this is an answer to your issue, but language changes used to plague me at one point, however, I did ‘the magic something‘ and it appears that it fixed things. The problem is that I cannot now remember how I got into the mess, nor how I dug my way out again.

Fastest one I ever had was a RS 3.1 in Germany.

I am going to guess that was not the 3 litre one I hired from Hertz Rent-a-wreck when I was about to go to the airport years back. It was clearly due for a service (or the knackers yard). I knew something was wrong when the traffic lights changed and the old guy on a push-bike who must have been older than I am now, out dragged me to the next set of lights. Shame really as its image ‘sort of’ appealed  before that. I could struggle to get into the anything like that now. The physio I was promised to ease my hip problem has not materialised neither has a review appointment I was also promised ‘in three months time‘.

I will not argue whether the electronics need an expert, they do. Though the issues are not always down to the electronic modules, whatever the computer might say. Both the wiring and especially the earthing can be a real issue that only an expert with a magic, and yes often oil free set of hands can track down. The local garage had one from one of the poorer parts of Europe where spare parts were very expensive. He learned things very carefully and not by simply changing bits until the car limped out of the workshop.

I was impressed by the travelling A/C person who re-gassed the old car, fixed price and a good result.

Rust is only ever solved at source, with good material, preparation, primer and subsequent coats. I understand your concerns about old oil sprays, they possibly did less harm than the infamous ‘underseal’ to operator, though only to the car. Underseal only ensured that rust had a home, I did it on one car, months later the negative results were obvious. I never went in for oil spraying, I left it to the engine to do that!

Now everyone goes on about gloves for every job, not back in the 1960s.

Bob, I do not down grade, deny or dispute that manufacturing of modern cars has improved over the years. Cars in the 1950s covered themselves in enough oil that in many cases helped to stave off the rot. Though by the 1960s the rot problem was starting to take and increasing toll. I was taken with both the small Renault Dauphine ‘family car’ and the Renault Floride ‘sports model’, but then I saw them rust away. Likewise the Mini and others. I have to agree that rust proofing and painting are considerably better than in that era and, yes engines and gear boxes tend to retain their oils to an extent that would only ever have been dreamed about back then. However, design and maintenance mistakes are made, drains that fill box members – Mazda, or easily clogged areas that then fill the body or structural areas with feted water – Audi. The last Ford we had in the 1990s should frankly never been produced, it needed new automatic gear boxes more often then engine oil changes and the brakes needed rebuilding after 30,000 miles and then the electrical wiring failed…

JLR do not have a great name for quality and many of the expensive cars do have a record for both picky owners and long lists of things worth picking over. The electronic systems come in for some complaints as cars age beyond 10 years, though whether this is the electronics or the wiring, earth bonding or what can be a very hard and expensive issue to pin down.

However with all that said and done I agree that cars with the exception of the lemons are better built and do have the potential to last far better than most cars of 50 years ago. I suggest that they do still need some care and respect to achieve their full long life potential.

Before Steve, comments as he might otherwise feel he should. The improvement in car body work applies to all makers and my one time comments or Renault appear to have ben fixed a long while back.
