Hi Dave,
Thanks for th quick reply, and its put my mind at ease knowing they are all good boards.
I am not worried about wifi (have used ethernet cable for past 10 years), nor more slots really, as I just need graphics and 2 x ram slots so micro should be ok. Not sure what a Type C connector is for, however I only use mouse, keyboard and headphones – plus the odd controller, and occasionally charge my phone so I guess I dont need a Type C.
Once again, Thanks.
Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have put Google and Youtube in the “Manage exceptions” part of privacy/security in Firefox. I thought it had solved the problem, as the messages stopped appearing, but then…every so often one will pop up,but at least its a bit better.
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I will check out Shields Up,and Fing. Thanks
Hi, thanks for the informative and helpful replies. I have sorted it – I unplugged my HDD, booted the PC and it recognised the SSD. I then plugged HDD back in, booted up and system now recognises both drives. Just to make sure I opened windows defrag optimizer, and it lists what type of drives you have and their label etc, so all seems fine now with my C: SSD drive. Many thanks.
December 5, 2018 at 8:19 pm in reply to: CPUZ shows my ram is running at 1333Mhz and not 1600Mhz #28897? LOL. Thanks Dave. Quick reply, short and straight to the point – and I am no longer worrying about it. Thanks
I have played Elex for several hours. You have to persevere at first, mainly doing quests local to the first town you come across. Eventually you will get more skills, better armour etc, and things start to get easier regarding fighting etc. Once I had levelled up, and got better equipment/armour I found I was enjoying the game a lot more, and the fighting does take a bit of getting used to. Not hack n slash, but sort of timing attacks, and watching the attack meter so you can do special/powerful attack. However, I have put it on hold for a while – lol, and will no doubt go back to it sometime. The HUD is so intrusive too – too large and blocky – spoils the immersion.
You sir, are a genius. I thought I had ran that programme prior to my latest Windows 10 installation, but on checking the posts I had made on the forum, and my windows files, I realised I had done it after the latest Win installation. I had used Ultimate Windows Tweaker – I selected restore to defaults on the icons screen, and hey presto – icons all back on desktop and folders etc.
Problem solved. I was positive I had not run the programme on this latest installation. Thanks for all the suggestions and help :good:
Same problem with an earlier restore point – same message popped up. Next stop..windows repair??
Windows restore failed – following message popped up :
failed while restoring the directory from the restore point.
Source: AppxStaging
Destination %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps.
Unspecified error occurred during restore. (0x80070091)Does that mean anything to anyone. Have 1 more earlier restore point to try (I did a full re-install of windows about 3 weeks or so ago, so not many restore points to choose from!)
Scannow didnt find any errors etc. Will try a restore.
Yep, it was similar to above – but it didnt resolve the issue. . I have just gone into “This PC/my pictures folder – no pictures showing, just the name of the pictures. Yet when I go to save a picture to the folder, I can click “all files” on the save screen and then all the pictures etc show up. I thought the issue might be cos pc is running in tablet mode, which hides icons apparently, but it is not in tablet mode. Running out of ideas at present.
This is what my pictures folder looks like, a mix if .ico files, .png files etc. I right click on them, select properties..nothing happens. I wonder if I should do a system restore to a few days ago? Below that “This PC” folder – same thing happens, cant select “properties” – no icons or anything either! Desktop is the same, just names of apps/links, no icons.

Also, in addition to my reply above, I found a link about missing icons, which showed me how do a similar command to what you said Ed, but in local/appdata/microsoft/windows/explorer. However that didnt bring back my desktop icons. It does give another link to sort out other missing icon issues, but I will have a look at that tomorrow. Strange that just by plugging in a new monitor, with higher resolution that it has caused this issue ( I am assuming that was the cause).
Hi Ed.
I tried the above command prompt etc – It says it couldnt find IconCache.db – I went into the appdata/local folder itself and had a look, there is no iconcache.db listed – is that what my issue is then – no iconcache files?
Hi Ed,
I tried that – That option is already selected (tried unselecting and reselecting the option, the names disappear if I uncheck show icons). I tried the option for bigger/smaller icons too but it just makes the name smaller – e.g. for Avast Antivirus – there is no icon, just the name “Avast Antivirus”. If I select bigger or smaller icons, it just moves the names closer together for small icons, further apart for big icons – aaargh!
Thanks Bob,
that seems to have resolved the issue – much appreciated.
February 21, 2017 at 8:13 pm in reply to: Recycle Bin icons wont change between full and empty #4243Quick edit – I found that if I “refresh” view on desktop, the icons will change to correctly reflect either empty or full, so I am not sure why they wont change by themselves?
Did a further search on google, and found a fix, where I had to do a quick edit of the recycle bin command or whatever, but it works fine now. Solved.
Hi,
Re-installed Win 10. Everything seems to be running fine now. The only problem is, with a new install, is going through Win 10 and doing all the tweaks etc to get it how I like it, and then downloading and reinstalling all the games, mods, reshade/sweetfx, saves etc – Great fun!
Thanks for all the advice, and perhaps its better doing a fresh new install after all, as I did update from Vista to Win 10, so at least I know its a brand new Win 10 installation.
I give up. ! More problems. I changed from an AMD to Nvidia graphics card about 2 weeks ago. Was reading up on a program called Display Driver Uninstaller so thought I would run that to ensure all amd drivers cleared out and re-install nvidia afresh. Ran DDU as instructed, via safe mode, restarted pc, and now my nvidia driver install keeps failing – “could not create folder c:\temp\nvidia\nvdisplaycontainerinstallerTemp”. The install bar gets about 1/10 of the way along and the message pops up and then shortly after I get the failed isntallation scren. Tried different drivers too, same issue. Tried a workaround ref the temp folder prob – by editing variables TEMP and TMP to c:\temp – but still didnt work.
Getting fed up with this now, 😥 – reformat and reinstall on the way I think!
Hi Dave, I tried the above – Recovery/Reset procedure, but at the end it stated it encountered a problem resetting windows, so nothing was changed, and the .dll issue is still there.
I suppose only alternative is reformat my hard drive and re-install Windows 10?
Thanks for the replies etc so far. I also had an issue with Discord (which I use for my MMO’s). Last couple of days it has got stuck in a loop when launching it, saying “trying to update”. I had to go into the app/local/discord folder and rename update.exe to update1.exe and Discord would then launch as normal. It seems to be updates that are being affected – i.e Java, Discord, and the other programmes are Windows Live Mail (which comes up with the .dll error but I can still use), and Skype (which keeps saying error, and retry). I uninstalled Skype, and re-installed it, but getting same error.
I upgraded from Vista to Win 10 using the free upgrade – so I am not sure how I go about doing a fresh windows 10 install as I dont have the CD – I will have to look into it. I am running Scannow again. Ah, actually – My son upstairs with his new budget PC has a WIN 10 disc, so I can use that. !
Quick edit, re Skype it says error, retry etc, and below that says check yr internet connection. By the way I stopped avast from running, plus zone alarm firewall, but Skype still didnt work – in case avast and zone alarm were causing the issues.
