You know what I’m going to say ? Get an independent AP that’s up to the job of a modern household.

A Cloud Managed Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LITE (1200Mbps AC) is £78 and if you buy it from Broadbandbuyer they will set it all up for you. All you do is plug it in. The Cloud Controller lasts 3 years after which time you can set up your own (loads of How To out there and a Pi will more than do) or just leave it. It doesn’t need the controller to function day to day.

        Interference is never that bad.

It’s probably a ram problem. The router needs to keep track of lots of things so creates tables of information. If these get corrupted rebooting starts things again from fresh.

You’ll have to set up port forwards on the second router, so each camera will have to use a different TCP port from each other to be able to access them from the first network. Should be doable, just takes some planning.

Accessing them from the internet may be possible too. On the first router forward those TCP ports to the second router’s IP. However the old double NAT may screw it up. But I wouldn’t trust a BT hub to do anything correctly. I hate the GUI when doing things like this.

Another way to do it is with a Smart switch or a Vigor and create Ethernet port based VLANs. Ethernet ports 1 to 3 would be in VLAN 1. Ports 3 and 4 would be in VLAN 2 (so port 3 is in both VLAN 1 & 2). Put the cameras on port 4, the PC on port 3 and everything else on ports 1 &2 (could be to another switch).

I have a TP-LINK TL-SG108E 8-Port Smart Desktop Gigabit Switch £30 at Amazon (it can do tagged VLANs and link aggregation too) on the test LAN. My network backbone is the 16 port version.

So basically you’ll be using the BT hub to provide the ISP connection, internet facing firewall, DNS and DHCP duties?  That’s not really getting rid of it. Also can’t see any WiFi Access Point .

I agree with BL, no point in dicking around. AFAIK all your clients would have to wireless (you have to route from one interface to another) and the Pi wireless is crap. Then you have double firewalls and double NAT.

I’ve mentioned the TP-Link TD-W9970 before N300 @ £36, the Ac1200 is £70. But as you know I use Draytek Vigors a lot. They cost more but are properly supported and very configurable.

            My own network is:

Vigor 2760 (no Wifi) DNS. Firewall.

TPL Gigabit Smart Switch —- Synology NAS (DHCP, file store and backup target). PiHole.

Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC LR 2.4Ghz 450 Mbps 5Ghz 867 Mbps

Most devices are now connected via WiFi, some via an AP in client mode attached to a switch. Only “infrastructure” devices and the workshop PC are wired directly to the switch.

If you want to trade with someone then you have to agree some rules around standards, that’s what the EU is primarily about. Do we all have the same H & S regulations, the ones often quoted as the EU gone mad? A quick trip to Europe soon tells you it’s what WE add to the EU rules (EU rules are a baseline) that are the things most often ridiculed in the press.

We are not “told what to do” we have a seat at the table and massive influence on decision making. Things more often than not have gone our way. We get back in economic growth far more than we pay into the club, as we will be finding out shortly.

Ah, yes you’re right the Amazon link wasn’t the Micro Dream store.

MD’s are wiped and a new W10 installer put on the drive. With their Lenovos they add the hardware drivers (can’t vouch for every model) but I can’t remember what they did with the HP. I vaguely remember going to the HP website and getting a BIOS update but not sure if I needed anything else.

Blimey Bob. After sorting out the garage / workshop after the kitchen replacement I’ve done bugger all.

Mind you it’s hard to move here. #1 son is home with 7 years worth of independent living junk and daughter home from Uni for the summer with her similar junk. I will get fed up soon and do what I’ve been threatening, hire a secure lockup and chuck it all in.

Surely we will go to double summer time, like in the good old days?

Just reading up I found that we tried staying on summer time all year from 68 to 71. I don’t remember that at all but my bedtime would have been 8pm back then. Apparently everyone hated the dark mornings, not just oop north.

I couldn’t remember what options there were, I see far too many machines to even remember my own! I know some of the higher end ones have more options.

I hope it works out, these are lovely bits of kit. I’m going to keep an eye out for an i7 1600 x 900.

I’ve just upgraded a 3 yo Lenovo laptop to an SSD installing everything from scratch and that’s very true.

One thought about the 840, it could be NOD32 doing initial scans. Kaspersky took 20 – 25 minutes to do it’s first full scan (37GB worth on a 240GB SSD). My installation media is at the same version as the 840’s i.e. the last major upgrade (I forget which one that is now). Only 3 updates but all seemed to need a reboot.

Why do we want to ship products half way around the world that can be found on our doorstep or are already included in the current trade deal with them?

The only thing added was Eset Nod32 Av and not a trial either, it has a 400 day licence. If I didn’t have a Kaspersky licence going spare I’d have left it on there, it’s good.

I got an Office licence off E-Bay and the usual free stuff from Ninite. Once she’d signed into Chrome all her internet life was sorted. My network printers were picked up but the Samsung laser really needed their driver.

BTW I’ve tried the Kaspersky free AV now and it’s probably all anyone really needs. It does appear in my “My Kaspersky” console but the only thing it tells me is the databases are up to date and when it last logged in. Again that’s probably all a home user needs.

Don’t forget the same card does Bluetooth, bu there is an AC7620 in the specs that could have been supplied in later or the i7 1600 x 1200 version and it’s on Amazon

It has USB3 so no problem there if that fails.

                                  Who says we needed saving?

We probably will do when we’re the sick man of Europe again. I was a teenager in the 70s and I don’t remember any sunny uplands. All our prosperity has come since we’ve been in the EU but it was (and is) centred in the South East. Leaving won’t redress that it’ll probably just make it worse.

Who is going to be putting the capital in to provide better paid jobs in these deprived areas? Not Westminster.

It very much depends model by model. On my V110 the whole back comes off but it’s a very scary experience as it’s clearly designed not be worked on. When it’s off most parts are there to see, but wires and those damn flat cables snake everywhere. You cannot remove the battery, you have to electrically disable it.

With the HP 840 you push a locking slider and the whole back slides off gracefully exposing everything you can work on in a tidy manner. The battery is under there too but it’s removable with the usual two locking sliders.

“Experts” with a political agenda (Osborne, Cameron, etc) came up with the more fanciful predictions – as they always do. But that’s the one we always hear about. Anyone with half a brain could see they were rubbish and what was behind them, indeed I think they were counter productive. I thought the same about Boris’s”sunny uplands” too and for the same reason although he didn’t define what a sunny upland was.

However there were many who predicted what has happened. An immediate major drop in the £, which still hasn’t recovered, and a drop in growth which almost went into recession. A fall in investment due to the uncertainty and the fact that the £££s that were to go to the NHS was a myth. I remember in Truro Boris offered the same money to the fishermen, farmers and the Cornwall County Council, all to make up for the EU subsidies. That was on Day One.

Then there was the “this will be the easiest trade deal in history” tale. Either Dr Fox is incompetent (remember why he was an ex-minister) or just lying. Take your pick but it’s all tell them what they want to hear today and deny it later. I have to say that he has become more realistic lately though and acknowledges that there are some genuine concerns that can’t be dismissed as Project Fear. But perhaps he like being a minister again?

What I am still waiting for is the Brexiteer MPs plan. They know the devil is in the detail and the detail is extremely complex. All they can do is rubbish whatever anyone else comes up with and blame the EU as they always have done. No deal becomes the easy way out, you can just blame it all on someone else.

There can be no disputing the fact that the Conservative party is tearing itself apart, we see it daily. And yes Labour is in the same predicament but not to the same magnitude. Both Corbyn and May are totally lacking in any leadership qualities and holding on to what they have got by any means possible. The interests of the country doesn’t seem to be on either’s agenda. They will find whatever money they need down the back of the sofa whilst telling others there is no money or it’s why that’s the reason to rob them (again, take your pick).

As you very well know “I’m leaving the country if…” isn’t declaration of intent, it’s like I could murder for a cup of coffee or I could do that with one hand tied behind my back.

Sat in the pub on Tuesday after my mates funeral with old friends I haven’t seen for a long time. Everyone is getting the biker bug again as the kids have flown the nest and we can pretend we are the people we used to be ? Like Steve’s post, the possibility that the next European Tour may turn out to be more complicated than the last (20+ years ago) has seen us postpone even the thought of planning it. Si made a good point, borders are just invisible lines put up by people in power to bugger up everyone else. If they were in the “interests of the people” inside them why do they keep on changing? We can’t even use the excuse of an island nation. The UK borders have nothing to do with the coastline and a large chunk of those inside aren’t happy with them. Hence devolution and the whole NI situation.

I’ve been pleased with mine, both sons and F-I-L  have identical machines and friends have variations from £25 to £125. It saw my daughter through her A levels, I just wish she’d found the duplex button ?

I got the last lot of inks from Toner Experte on Amazon. 4 x XL sets for a tenner http://tinyurl.com/y94fxcjg

This article Best photo printers 2018 is interesting. “When it comes to making high-quality photo prints at home, the inkjet market has narrowed to a two-horse race. HP and Lexmark have become more oriented towards document printing, leaving Canon and Epson to slog it out in the photo arena. ”

I moved from Epson to Canon a few years ago and don’t regret it. I have a now obsolete Canon MG66500 5-ink Photo All-in-One with duplex and even with 3rd party inks I find the photo quality more than acceptable. The replacement looks like it’s the £85 Canon PIXMA TS6150 with very similar specs but adds Bluetooth.

Oh yes. Wireless is fine, printing requires very little bandwidth. Even my monster colour laser only has a 65 mbps adapter.
