iPad turned up today. Started settling it up 45 minutes ago. Took 5 of that to get an Apple ID password it would let me use! In the end the one it liked was IMO less secure than the first one.

The screen is nice but the huawei T5 is much better. Ok the iPad is 5 years older but they cost me the same. The battery has only gone down 4% and I’m getting used to the keyboard, slowly. Keep hitting return instead of backspace.

Steve, Manything Pro works just fine. You can install it and go to the demo. They are real cameras set up in their offices. Poke a camera to go to its live feed and clips.

I can see why people would have paid the premium when this was new, only an expensive Samsung would have compared. But now £100+ android tablets will be just as good. I hate the lack of expansion options.

Time to go delving into the works…

Yeah I reckon that url goes with the pub.

BL, Steve knows all about the Sky police ? Steve looked at Sky’s “free” WiFi offering as it seemed an easy way to sort the problem – the current share the Technicolor router’s SSID has to stop. Customers only get a 15 minute session through a highly advert strewn gateway, the landlord can’t use it for business and the installation costs are astronomic. Their phones would be embedded in the TV on the wall by 2PM! A Ubiquiti AP will sort that, the £60 300N will more than do the job and Steve can keep till, CCTV monitor and customers apart and still have a spare channel.

The problem is you’re not in complete control. If others decide your mail server is untrustworthy it’s game over.

That’s why I moved my mail server from Fast Hosts to Microsoft.

I have an Office 365 business account and changed the MX records for giffordsystems.co.uk to have Microsoft as the mail provider. It’s been working a treat with Outlook on all devices.

I believe with g suite you need to transfer the whole domain.

According to John Redwood and Nigel Farage it’s duplicates, triplicates and Russian bots. I suppose he’d know.

A lot on the march in London yesterday too. I think they were all called Boris and Olga.

I did think about cellular but I carry a 3 MyFi hotspot everywhere anyway. It’s got a 3 sim preloaded with 12GB that lasts 12  months, which is just about right. £40 from 3 direct, £28 from MyMemory

That’s the way I’m thinking ED. It’s more to bone up on the Apple world rather than anything else but of course I’d be looking at putting my utilities from the Android world on it as well as the consumer apps like Hik-Connect.

UniFi Network needs iOS 11, Hik-Connect and Manything Pro only 8. A quick look about and 11 is popular. I suspect native QR code scanning may have a lot to do with that. QR is proving very popular with consumer app configuration.

I think the Mini 2 is in the lead.

Camera plan is sorted. No, I was thinking about using an iPad as the local CCTV monitoring device as it could be quickly re purposed into a till should the till fail.

There are any number of ways we could quickly replace the CCTV monitoring device. Indeed there will be more than one to start with as remote monitoring is very high up Steve’s list. Any half decent smart phone will do the job, which these days means even entry level, or a tablet like a Huawei MediaPad T3. The software is free.

Steve, about half way down the wikipedia page is a table showing ipad models and the level of ios they support.

iPad up to and inc 4th Gen and the mini 1st Gen are the only ones out of support. Everything else can take ios12.

Looking at John Lewis, the 10″ 32GB iPad 2018 is £320 which makes a refurbished Grade A Air @ £150 look like a viable proposition. I can’t imagine epos will need any cpu muscle at all.

Just thinking about redundancy, it may be an idea to get two and use one as the local CCTV monitor so it can be quickly brought into action if the till goes down. There are plenty of ways we can quickly bring another CCTV monitoring device into action but you need a till or there’s nothing for the cameras to monitor ?

Having said that there are CEX stores in Rhyl and Bangor for emergencies.

                            Nice one Steve.

Hik-Connect needs ios8 or later, so to be safe with support it looks like I need an iPad Mini 2nd Gen at minimum.

I’ve found refurbished, 1 years warranty, new charging cable, iPad Mini 2 and Air are the same price– 16GB – WiFi – Grade A for £130 32GB for £150, 64GB £195.

I’m thinking 32GB is +£20 well spent but +£65 for 64GB is a bit much. The question now is the form factor. The mini will definitely be easier to shove in the rucksack.

When I think what a fantastic brand new Huawei Mediapad T5 I got for the same price for the Legion’s CCTV monitor. Still hopefully it’ll pay for itself in the long run.

I agree, full system backups are very wasteful unless you have a program that can deal with deduplication (not backing the same thing up more than once). Windows backup is particularly horrible and doesn’t deal with disk space management as it purports to.

As BL says getting a system back from scratch is now less than half an hour. I use EaseUs ToDo backup for a daily incremental backup of data only, retaining 30 versions. It will fit on a 64GB stick easily.

It’s a bit like the Lords. They do their job – don’t forget there was a withdrawn amendment asking the same thing last week so he didn’t start it – and those who don’t like the answer are horrified. Jacob Rees-Mogg is very good at vacillation of this sort with regards the Lords.

My cousin(ish) was an umpire (Mervyn Kitchen) and was told off for calling too many no balls. His answer, tell the bowlers to stop bowling them and I’ll stop calling them.

From what I can see this weeks vote would still have failed and TM would be asking for an extension in any case. But yes, Bercow does seem to love the camera but then he is a politician and as a species they all do.
