Don’t forget you can use an external antenna, but just getting out of the brick walls can make a huge difference as will height. A more directional antenna pointing at the mast will improve things even further, however a long cable could lose more than it gains. A lot of people don’t know that (Michael Caine voice).

A good first bet is to place it on a window sill upstairs on the mast side of the house and see how it goes. Give it 10 -15 mins in each to find the best one.

For a boost there’s a £21 indoor external 49 dbi antenna for £22 on Amazon that has good reviews, mount that in the window. The larger Huawei units usually have SMA connectors, but check they’re not TS9 if you have anything else.

It’s about time they were held to account for the blatant lies that are repeated over and over even after they have been proved to be such. The problem is he’ll get away with it and a green light will be given to really go for it without fear.

We all know politicians are all liars but at least they used to have the grace to look embarrassed when found out and stop it. I know porkies were told on both sides but only one had a big red bus with it emblazoned on in the biggest lettering possible. He made a point of mentioning it all the time in debates too, it’s not like it was a flash in the pan statement it was a key strategy.

Try and find out what they’re using. At that age a tablet may be more appropriate for lots of reasons.

Texts are sent / received from the web interface of the Huawei routers, even my little portable one.

Three do an unlimited everything sim for £20 / £22 / £26 depending on contract length.  With BT line rental @ £16+ a month this is starting to look like a no brainer if the technical side is OK.

The Motos aren’t very blingly, but mine always go in a bumper case anyway. The point is they have decent specs for the money and just work.

I needed a very backlit photo yesterday, none of the phones here could handle it even with flash. Grabbed my old Coolpix bridge camera and it was perfect first time. Made me realise what I put up with for convenience.

I use the UK equivalent of TechSoup to get the charities software. I noticed that the MS products were going over to this way of deployment (I used to just get a key from VLSC) so decided to get my new licences from EBay as they were cheaper and less hassle!

There’s irony for you. They must be buying in massive volumes to make it pay, so much so I think it must be dodgy in all respects.

It’s what it says it is, a volume licence. Legitimate in that it’s real but legal? as in are they entitled to sell it to you – I doubt it. Get a refund.

Never had a DOA but have had most of the early 60 and 100 GB drives fail now. All the SanDisk cache drives have gone west.

I’ve been buying the cheap King Dian etc drives off Amazon with no ill effects but now Kingston are the same price I get them.

For new builds there is only one game in town, M2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe Adata SX8200 Pro series.

My son asked me the same question about an Honor 8x, the price is down on Amazon since the news.

Like me he thinks this will all blow over at some stage and it’s only Trump being a prat so he’s going ahead. I would too.

It appeals to his base who like the macho man sticks it to the goddam commies without any clue as to the consequences.

When you watch American shows like The Simpsons or Famliy Guy you can see what Americans really think of Made in America products and it isn’t great. “Excellence in Broadcasting”, in which Limbaugh himself participated, is probably the most scathing YouTube clip.

Exactly. He cannot use the spying angle with Hikvision, they are very open and part of many IT bodies now. It’s Linux at the heart (some very top end management systems use W10) and the chips are mostly phone type SoC but again the very high end management systems (not cameras) may use Intel. Certainly those with embedded W10 do.

I wonder what would happen if the Chinese denied American companies from their manufacturing? Apple aren’t just going to spin up a Foxconn replacement overnight.

It’s not a Huawei type deal, I can’t see it having much effect. Looks like they are going after Dahua as well. They will just source everything locally, Trump will not gain anything.

This is all American jealousy, they have been left behind by their own inability to innovate. Most of the IP camera patents are held by the Chinese as the Americans were happy selling their analogue products and couldn’t see the future coming. Think Lotus 1-2-3 and Windows Excel.

You cannot AFAIK buy an all American or European camera. There is one minor Korean player I can think of but I’ll bet a fair bit of it actually comes from China.

I suggest the best thing we can do is just ignore the hot air, deliberately inflammatory statements and personal comments emanating from a certain direction.

The Brexit thread shows that starved of attention all he does is pop up elsewhere to spread the right wing propaganda of whoever is shouting the loudest in the bubble he inhabits.

Unfortunately like dealing with the pub bore we are a captive audience to be hectored. Well I’m moving to the other end of the bar but I’ll be damned if I’ll change pubs. I’ve been here a long time and I quite like (most of) it.

I don’t have a box and I’m not expecting to order anything of an appropriate size soon, but I have large sturdy plastic mailing bags and plenty of bubble wrap.

The drive cage is very thin mild steel so I’m going to look at carefully folding it flat.

I was thinking you could attach the motherboard tray to the case then mount the motherboard on it. That would get around the grounding issues.

Thinking about what Les said about grounding, I noticed the old Zoostorm case I was about to recycle was only held together with pop rivets. A bit of drilling later we have a motherboard tray, expansion slots, 5.25″ and 3.5″ drive cage, 120mm fan, 2 front USB and a switch / light assembly. There’s also a plastic drive caddy from another PC.

I’ve got a plastic HDD tray and some other odds and sods. I’ll gather them together and get a photo.
