There is no local GUI for PiHole, it’s all on the command line. Resetting the password, type: pihole -a -p

You don’t have to reinstall Raspian to enable SSH or VNC. From the main menu you want Preferences then Raspeberry Pi Configuration.

Both VNC and Putty connect via the IP address of the Pi. With Putty you will be asked to confirm the security keys at first connection. After that you’ll be asked to login, user = pi password = what_ever_you_set

Updating the PI: from a terminal of course 😀

sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get upgrade takes care of most things, but a better way is to use Pimroni’s script by typing curl https://get.pimoroni.com/uptodate | bash

Pimoroni is an absolute RPi guru and his scripts update everything on the Pi, including the firmware and apps like VNC that apt-get doesn’t. It takes a while!

Finally got around to setting it up. The Panasonic TV needed many Panasonic account hoops to jump through, turns on and off and channel switching, volume up and down ignored. Turns apps like Netflix on but the next thing you have to do needs the remote so a bit pointless.

I can turn the Kasa (TP-Link) smart bulb on and off but changing brightness is hit and miss. Music streaming is better but one thing you have to do is be precise in everything you want.

The Star Trek “Hello Computer” it is not unless you are happy to accept Google defaults for when you’re not 100% focused on what you want and know how to describe it. However I will persevere because I can see how it could be useful. Play lists will need to be set up etc.

Privacy? That went out of the window a long time ago but still deciding if this is a step too far. I may well test it with some fake news and see what happens. It all seems very loose with who gets access to what.

In the Chrome and Gmail world I’ve been researching some holidays for the first week in December. Started off a month ago with some EasyJet and Hotel.com searches of Vienna (for the Christmas Markets), Trip Advisor joined in with spam with our exact favourite hotel. Started thinking wider, may be a two centre holiday, let’s see what Railbookers have via Eurostar as in the meantime flights have got expensive.

So we’re off to Paris for 2 nights then Amsterdam for 3 nights to take in the Light Festival; high speed trains all the way to and from. My inbox is on fire from companies I use with alternative hotels and trips I may want to take. However none of them mentioned the specific Light Festival canal cruises we really want to do, which shows how generic the algorithms must be.

And Google hasn’t twigged where we are actually staying as Maps doesn’t show the reservations as it usually does when we get confirmations by gmail message. All contact between us and Railbookers has been via Gmail but all the detail has been in PDFs which makes me think they aren’t opening documents. Probably a step too far.

Should be fine for light duties. I was mucking about with an Asus Transformer yesterday, 10″ tablet docked to a keyboard. It’s only a 1.4Ghz Atom with 2GB and a weedy solid state 32GB drive (not an SSD) with a 500GB spinner in the keyboard.

The battery lasts forever (charges with a 2 amp+ mobile phone charger) and it’s amazing just how usable it is if you don’t push it with multi-tasking. It’s even taken the W10 May update, although this choked the 32GB drive. Which is why I had it, a disk clean up got 8GB back and all is now well.

It’s used for out of hours (on call) office duties, mostly Word, some Excel and web mail via a VPN to the data server back at HQ. We tried using it as a TightVNC Client to their PC back in the office, worked brilliantly.

I use both on a daily basis. My private life is in Chrome and my Business in FF. It just makes it easier in my brain 😀

I know what you mean about FF Bob, but I don’t find it gets in my way. After years in Google land I seem to automatically filter out these things. The best thing I’ve done is get a PiHole running (thank you Drezha) and when I didn’t have one for a few days it really rammed home just how monetised everywhere is and how much that slows things down.

If you’re heavily into the Google world, which I am and no bad thing, then you cannot live without Chrome. But I can honestly say I’m happy with FF looking after my non Google world.

I reckon your next project should be a PiHole. The Raspberry Pi 3 Official Desktop Starter Kit is £50 on Amazon. The O/S is already installed on the SD card with the NOOBS installer. Once that’s sorted you can unplug it from mouse, monitor and keyboard and use VNC Viewer to remotely access it – RPi have licenced it.

Setting up the PiHole is automated, the instructions are here. As part of the PiHole installation it’ll let you set a fixed IP if you want (it’s a good idea). Once PiHole is working you then change the DNS server IP address in the DHCP server on your router to the PiHole, reboot the PC’s and phones and most of the ads will be gone.

Any ads that are hard wired into a webpage you can never stop, but most go off to an ad server (so the ads can be targetted / rotated) and PiHole blocks those ad servers.

I think you’ll enjoy the process and I’m sure GS will be impressed 😀

Somebody will be thrown under the bus as he promised something to everyone. I suspect it’s the DUP, but they will be weighing up facing a No Deal which will crucify parts of NI and for which they would be blamed. If there is a GE and no Brexit they may well have no Tory Govt to support so they’ll be under the bus then anyway. If the Tories can be the largest party they may well have influence once again.

If the DUP are onside then the Spartans have a hard time justifying opposition on the basis of NI.

We could end up with basically TMs deal in the end. Boris can claim to have tried and obtained (insert minor concession here) and more importantly we’ll be out on the 31st.

If there is a vote of no confidence Boris must resign. The Commons have 14 days to agree that someone else can form a government, Corbyn gets first dibs. That is the source of a government of national unity. People (potentially) from all sides come together under a leader. This is what Ed mans by a coup, not tanks on College Green.

Disillusioned Tories, some of who are not standing again (and some who have resigned from the Party) may not help Corbyn into power, but you could see them coming together to stop Boris if terms were right. Say a temporary Government to organise a Referendum. Such a Government could easily brought down if it over stepped their marks by a vote of no confidence.

If there is no-one then Parliament is dissolved and a GE takes place.

The Queen will side with the Commons under the PM of the day, like she did with Proroguing. But if Boris refused to resign after a vote of no confidence she could in theory oust him. I don’t think he dare do that, it would cause even more Constitutional uproar.

Is this the “Sovereignty” you voted for? If we were not already a Sovereign nation, how could all this be taking place? You’ll notice that the European Courts are not involved at all.

Royal decree? There is no such thing.

The Queen could technically remove Boris is he refused to resign after losing a no confidence motion but would only do so if the House of Commons has someone waiting to takeover. Which is what Ed was describing.

If there is no-one then it’s GE time and who knows how that will end. Another Referendum is the only sure way out.

Whatever happens the country is split in two and will be for a generation. We have the “responsible” Conservative Party to thank for that. I just hope this sees the end of them and they can take Labour with them.

The Benn Act was not drawn up by some know nothing back benchers, those who’ve looked at it say it’s not full of holes. They will have to find some way around it, not through it. The Courts take a dim view of loopholes when the intent is obvious. No-one can claim that the act is ambiguous.

It’s all talk to keep people on side until the last minute, then something else needs to be blamed. They’ve even tried stoking up civil disobedience so that certain emergency powers can be granted. The dog whistles are out.

When crashing out through the back door is safe we’ll get an election. Until then it’s an obvious elephant trap.

That would be contempt which is a huge no-no. He’s in enough trouble with the Courts as it is. Try it yourself, become a serial speeder and see what the Courts think.

Can’t got wrong with an Evofor a fiver!

Class XX = how fast the card can read and write files. The larger the number the better and it’s based on how fast it can write files (read is always much faster).

Class 2 = 2MB/s, Class 10 = 10MB/s minimum write speed. You’ll often see the actual speeds list as well. So the Evo Nolan linked to is Class 10 minimum but capable of 20MB/s

I wouldn’t buy anything less than Class 10 for general use and that’s what most are these days. If you’re buying for a high spec device, like a camera with a high resolution that also takes shots in bursts, then it’s important you read the documentation.

Best get it over and done with in one day 😁

The best thing I’ve done with the Legion (and others) is install O&O Syspectr (free) on their PCs (keeps and eye on critical Windows components and hardware and allows remote control) and VPN through a Draytek router (could be an RPi) to look at the CCTV. The Ubiquiti WAPs are cloud managed.

Probably not something you can do with the TV system, but if you get involved in the PCs definitely check out Syspectr.

Apparently business is NI are not impressed with the prospect of an ad infinitum potential 4 year change of the rules.

It seems the only happy ones are the DUP who have been bought off again. It doesn’t give them any incentive to get Stormont up and running again does it? They have a puppet on a string in Westminster to get what they want.

Of course the big gamble is that the Tories remain in power.

There is no chance of this getting through. For one thing it gives the DUP a veto. It also looks like we’re turning our backs on our nearest markets in favour of, who? The USA? Total madness.

Not too long until the vote of no confidence or voting down the Queens speech.

@Drezha I reckon you’ll be fine looking at this chart

@ED – Three really have broken the ground as far as international roaming is concerned as well as data linits. It applies to mobile broadband sims as well as phones and includes tethering (Personal Hotspots).

If you’re happy with just the EU then the Essentials Plan is fine, you need the Advanced Plan for the USA plus you get the full monty of other countries and benefits – comparison chart. But it’s not huge £££+ more.

The days of a cheap phone and sim at the airport are on their way out, unless you’re staying for a month or more then you’re at the mercy of “fair usage”.

My daughter will be going to China for 3 months next year (University language degree) but I’ll bet if I ask “nicely” (as I have been with Three since almost the start and pay the family’s phone bills) I can negotiate something. It’s a million to one I won’t get a deal.

If Three don’t play ball it will of course be their fault that I’ll be off. In fact they’ll be leaving me, not me leaving them, as this isn’t the original deal I signed up for. All the contract changes since then have been imposed upon me. I know China didn’t have a mobile service back then but WTF? Who agreed to adding all these countries and what has it cost us bill payers? Nobody asked me. I have no intentions of visiting Guatemala so why am I subsidising the handful of people who will?

I will have negotiated fairly and Three will have dismissed my reasonable demands out of hand. How could any head of household possibly agree to dividing the family in such a way? Either we all have roaming or we all leave together!

I mean robbing barstewards! I’ve worked out my gross payments to Three amount to over £100 a month! Do they let me negotiate any side deals with say EE for the China data? Do they hell! It’s all or nothing.

That’s it, Three have until the end of the month to agree to my perfectly reasonable proposition (which I now understand Three need in writing)! or I’m off and taking the family with me. None of them want to change but I pay the bills so I make the decisions, especially now the kids haven’t talked to each other for nearly 3 years. Jack is on my side though, so I’ll take it he’s speaking for them all. Paying off his student loan was a small price to pay, but I sort of said I would one day, maybe, sort of do that. If we could afford it, which we couldn’t. Then I found some cash down the back of the sofa.

Have you seen how much Three want for the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G? I’m damn sure I could negotiate a better deal myself by tea time! There are 5 of us after all, six if I included the mother-in-law. But she’d probably want another Huawei.

If they think they’ll get a penny out of me for ending my contract early they can go do one!

The reason I used the battery pack was because it didn’t like his fag lighter adaptor. IIRC your’s was about a fag lighter adaptor too?
