      Yep, that’s the one!

Bitly must have cocked up as I have never even looked at a pair of Oakleys, never mind bought any.

My Mrs is a coach for the local women’s running club and uses Plotaroute

I’ve used it myself when looking at lockdown strolls around the neighbourhood.  The Autoplot has options for car, bike or walking. You click on your start point, then the next way point and so on, and it plots the best route to get between them. The map is as up-to-date as it could be with the new estates going up around here all marked and what roads are in place shown.

Yep, the market is flooded with Optiplex at the moment. I’m sat on some HP 4th Gen Pentiums I refurbished as they are probably worth more to me as test machines than trying to flog them at the moment. All have 8GB, an SSD and a 1TB spinner and are fine, until you compare them to the i3-12100 with 3 x 4 NVMe I just built for a customer…

Dells are built like tanks and will last and last. The problem comes if you want to add a hard drive and find you need a caddy, or the proprietary PSU breaks.

These new drives are, I believe, Intel designed and built. I don’t know if they are junking their own stuff or going to operate as “separate” businesses aimed at specific markets.  But the top end kit will be “Intel” I’m sure.

I couldn’t believe those PSU figures when they came out. Gaming CPU’s seem to be creeping back up too, but obviously not so drastically!

I remember visiting Tim in Spain in the Pentium days and he used to have the side off the case and a pedestal fan on full chat as close as possible. Wish I’d taken a photo now.

Hoorah! LGA sockets, no more bent pins! Intel need to get their prices sorted out pronto.

As usual, I am more interested in what’s going to happen at the cheaper end, but TBH 4C/8T NUC style machines are now my go-to for most things. I’ve been hearing good things about the Beelink range and the Asus PN’s are still like rocking horse poo if you don’t need an R7.

No, they just lie. It’s inherent in the process. But at least in the past when caught out they looked a bit sheepish, this lot just double down.

Our first WECA “Metro” Mayor got a big boost by saying he could fix a NIMBY issue in favour of the NIMBYs. When in office he admitted that it wasn’t actually in his gift to do so. He didn’t even bother trying for a second term.

Liz Truss will U Turn, probably pretty quickly, on what she’s been saying to get herself elected. She may be the favourite of the <1% of the country that put her there, but she’s not got the MPs behind her and is about to send a lot of the powerful ones to the back benches. I am fully expecting Poll Tax style riots by the New Year if the fuel bills aren’t sorted out.

But where the hell are Labour?

Les, it’s not just the parties is it? If that was all it was I’d agree with you to some extent.

When anyone thinks it was just a drinky poo after work, remember that picture of the Queen at Philip’s funeral, then remember what was going on in #10 at the time. Wine up the wall, puke in the waste baskets and the staff treated like underlings. That’s the culture HE allowed to prosper. Could you imagine that happening with any other PM? Also remember people not allowed to visit dying relatives, nor attend their grave side, God forbid a wake.

It’s because he’s an incompetent narcissistic serial liar who ends up destroying anything and everything he touches. When things go wrong he blames anyone but himself, when they go right he takes all the plaudits. Of course he is better than Putin, but that’s a very low bar and he’s far from the best we have, God help us if he was. Like Putin he surrounds himself with Yes men who’s job depends on sucking up to him. Anyone with any talent is kept well away.

History is not going to be kind to him, nor his predecessors. What a fecking mess this country is in, not just financially but divided, quite deliberately, with false culture wars, all to keep him from scrutiny. He has run rough shod over UK law and our constitution, even lying to the Queen.

If he had been around for much longer he was going to do the same Internationally over a treaty he came up with, sold to the country as “oven ready” (even though he was warned fully about the issues) and had ratified by Parliament. The “United” Kingdom is rapidly falling apart. It seems inevitable now that Scotland and NI will go their own way. Then there’s international conventions on Human Rights and treating people worse off than you as human beings and not some scum to be left to rot or drown or shipped anywhere we please. Free journalism is under attack and voting is being suppressed. Pork Barrel politics is back under the guise of “Levelling Up”.

It’s not just a few parties is it?

It seems he’s going and has graciously said he’ll stay until a successor is elected. He also wants to introduce new policy though!

But it seems that he will have no ministers, so don’t know how that will work.

3 years to think about it. Business is ignoring 11 and there’s no way they can force that on them. They could say Enterprise version only though, but I fear that ,ay trigger a revolt.

A lot of my small businesses are now in a situation where they could ditch Windows as a lot of line of business software has moved to the cloud. Teams is just over the top now it’s trying to replicate an on premises domain, the skill set to administer it is way above enthusiastic amateur level.

But the two businesses that I have moved to Google Workspace are jogging along very nicely. Both could easily move to a Chrome o/s and not miss a thing.

I watched most of it, very good. Have to finish it off sometime.

As an aside, I got a replacement Amazon TV box a few weeks ago, the Cube. My old Fire TV was 8 years old and whilst it was 4K you could see it was struggling with the modern UIs on the apps. The Cube also combines an Alexa speaker, so that’s one more box I can get shot of.

The quality of the picture is incredible, we even watch live TV through iPlayer or ITV Hub etc. I always thought the HD picture via FreeSat was very good but it’s rubbish compared to the Fire TV. I can only assume there’s some clever upscaling going on and whilst you can’t add detail, there’s some sort of processing enhancing things. Of course content like anything Attenborough, The Mandalorian and Obi Wan Kenobi etc. are 4K these days.

The Sound Bar is being properly dealt with (we used to lose it if you paused for too long, it went back to the TV speakers) and the voice control is a lot better and gives limited control of the TV too without installing the Panasonic “skill” which was a bit crap anyway. It comes with an IR sender, so you can use it to control any other IR remote capable equipment you have.

They’re normally £100, but I got it for £70 in one of the flash sales Amazon have now and again.

And here’s the story behind the album cover https://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/latest/photo-news/150319-150319

It was taken by a professional sports photographer, long lens, motor drive etc. The depth of field is very shallow, fast shutter speed + long lens = large aperture, but this would have been carefully set up, he’d have known exactly where the dogs had to be. But all that does is increase your chances and of course takes great skill. No control over the dogs expression which is what makes this photo even greater.

I’ve just been building a couple of NUC 11s with Crucial drives and the Crucial management software has an option to set over provisioning.

It attempts to shrink the last accessible partition by X% (which it recommends or you can set) but failed. No problem, as advised, a quick trip to Disk Management to shrink the partition, then back to the Crucial software. The free space is recognised and you just click the Set OP button and it’s done.

I’ve used a few Thermaltake PSUs, they have been just fine. TBH I haven’t had a crappy PSU in years.

After using a GameMax GT300 80+ Bronze TFX unit in my own desktop case, I’ve been using the GP400A 400W 80+ Bronze ATX in larger cases (it’s rare I need a larger wattage these days). Both are £30 and silent and seem well built. The ATX has a nice long 4+4 cable for bottom mount cases too.

I haven’t bought a modular in a while as I use so few connectors, usually just the 24 pin and the 4+4, that the unused cables are easily stowed in the redundant drive bays. People only lose the unused leads anyway.

Yep, it’s all subjective. I store a lot of (relatively) large files on a TrueNAS server and the extended load/ save times don’t really bother me. But Synology Drive combined with Windows Storage Sense gives you files on demand with automatic clean up and really is very good.

What makes the difference for me is boot times and responsiveness but TBH it’s a game of diminishing returns after read speeds of ~1500 MB/s. I haven’t had to deal with a PC booting from a HDD for ages, all the ones I’ve seen are because of drive failure. I think it would drive me nuts.
