Good point about Gingerbread. I wonder if AirDroid will work with it?

Looks like it doesn’t last much longer when doing motion detection.

I don’t think it’s designed for what you want to do.

It’s usually there if you look in the system logs. Most people never do.

Well the good news is it all works and it all works together. Booted with 8GB ram no problems.

You’ll need a 970 motherboard, might as well get one the same as me.

The TalkTalk router is way better then anything Sky have managed. I’ve looked into what they do with Q and it’s quite crude (you cannot change the channel 5Ghz uses) and there are situations where the mesh just isn’t mesh. But in your average house with a single extra unit it’ll work OK. In your non average house you can’t use a third party network at all to help you out.

In the mesh world, NETGEAR Orbi (bloody expensive), LINKSYS Velop (bloody expensive), BT Whole Home Wi-Fi and Google WiFi (neither are cheap) are better at the mesh bit,  but introduce double NAT i.e. you have a second router in your network now. Fine if everything, including printers, servers, TVs etc. is on that WiFi but murder if they aren’t or you want to do something that involves port forwarding.

It’s far too easy to get all wound up about Windows updates, the cure is easy. Get it on W10 and leave it alone.

As you’ve heard me mention I look after a small charity with 20 PCs now and keep an eye on them remotely with Syspectr. I pop in every 2-3 days and if I see an update that needs doing and the PC is on I will force it because I might as well. Leave it to it’s own devices and the next time I look it’ll be sorted.

I’m surprised the Sky router is that bad, but it is what it is. However I have found that doing speed checks on Android phones can have very different results than a Windows laptop in exactly the same place so I’m not surprised they are different. It doesn’t seem to be related to signal strength (in db via a proper app, not the number of bars). My own WiFi is business class with regards diagnostics and I can see it from the other end too.

You cannot change the router, you will not find out the credentials even if you have a router that supports MER without serious dicking about. A third party access point is the way I went and makes a lot of sense. You are no longer dependent on your ISP.

I can’t comment on the specific AP you linked to, but TP-Link kit has always served me well. Search for my posts on WiFi and you’ll see what I do and what is involved. It’s not for the faint hearted in a DIY situation, but once it’s done it’s done.

TBH I wouldn’t worry too much about it if it’s sat behind a routers firewall. You may want to turn the Linux firewall on as well.

EDIT with W10 available on E-Bay at less than a fiver (I’ve bought nothing but this year) your horizons may well be expanded ?

Ed, I think it’s on a case by case basis depending on mobo and / or CPU now they control a lot of the buses.

Looking at this review of Skylake the CPU provides the PCI Express lanes for the graphics and the Z170 chipset has a flex-io hub. Flex-IO ports can flip between PCIe lanes, USB 3.0 ports or SATA 6 Gbps ports. Each manufacturer will split them up as they see fit, but if you look at their typical diagram there should be enough spare lanes for a pcie SSD or card even when all the SATA ports are full.

You need to look up your particular chipset and may be even OEM.

I trialled Macrium Reflect Free and ToDo free on different systems but in the same time period. I settled on ToDo.

100% agree with the boot USB stick. ToDo let’s you create one based on WinPE or Linux, USB, DVD or ISO image. I’ve used the WinPE USB in a test recovery situation.

The thing is he’d literally been turned into a pantomime villain. Remember at the end of the campaign on her highly managed “meetings with the public” there was a call and response between TM and the stooges like being at a panto.

I think the Brexit negotiations are truly forked now. As someone pointed out today you don’t negotiate a hard Brexit, you just do nothing. Leaving with no deal isn’t a threat, it’s the default condition. I am also fed up with the Brexiteers twisting any situation into being proof of support.

There needs to be some sort of cross party consensus now otherwise all that will happen is whatever is negotiated will just be rejected when it comes back. There’s still far too much posturing going on and in the “national interest” it isn’t.

Micheal Gove, the environment secretary that tried to drop climate change from the national curriculum. says it all really. Another case of have them inside the tent pissing out. Except this time I think the piss will be flying everywhere inside and out and a fair bit of shit too.

I’m hoping the UDP think of the implications to the peace process and realise what they may be shackling themselves to. I know this isn’t a coalition but the junior partner always comes off worse in the end. If it all goes T.U., especially at Stormont, it could cause them a world of pain like the Lib Dems are still feeling.

You can tell the Brexiteers are getting worried, they’re shouting even louder and claiming all Labour voters are their allies as well. So why are they so frightened of a Labour government? Surely if, as they say, Labour agree with their hard Brexit view that would be worth leaving the EU at any price? DUP want Farage involved

From what I saw with my kids they all got each other wound up and Labour tapped into it i.e. Labour were not the root cause.

They have felt ignored for a long time, because they were, and portrayed as feckless layabouts in the popular press, which they are not. They were betrayed by the Lib Dems and dismissed by the rest, so felt that you couldn’t trust any politician so what was the point?

Well Brexit, the increasing university fees and shitty job prospects were the straws that broke this camels back. The more clued up ones lead the way and it all happened where adults don’t go because they are not invited. I am truly astounded at just how much my three keep in touch and they are scattered around the West Country. Whatever app it is they use is always open on the phone by their side with multiple chats going that they dip in and out of. And they’re not sat on their arses doing nothing all day either, it gets fitted in around their daily activities.

The Tories had better wake because they now know what they can do! They had also better stop treating the rest of us like naughty children to be lectured and hectored and treated with contempt. “Consultation” my arse! Did she really think we’re that stupid? I’m going to take away a bunch of stuff from some people but you’ll just have to trust me that it’s not you.

This tie up with the DUP is being seen for what it is and it’s not for the good of the nation. Everyone is really worried about what this could do to the peace process, and from what I’ve read the DUP are too.

She’s toast, they’re just too scared to do the deed now because they know if they go back to the country the whole party will be too.

The whole last 7 years has just been one long Tory internal fight using the country as a weapon to try and beat each other with. I think everyone can now see it. Who do we get next? Boris or Gove?

One thing we’ve learned in the last few years is that anything can happen as the establishment keeps misreading reality. Even now TM really doesn’t seem to have got it. Perhaps she just cannot change. Even the SNP and Scottish Conservatives whilst upbeat with their outcomes have acknowledged they have been sent a message from the public.

One thing I’m really pleased about is the nations “youth” have become engaged. My kids are 18 – 25 and believe me that age bracket is totally engaged now. It’s all they’re talking about and in their own way via memes and video clips. They seem very switched on to spotting fake news too. I think we can put it all down to the referendum and Trump opening their eyes to what happens when you leave it to the old gits. TM’s strategy of personal attacks on the opposition totally back fired, they have a natural sense of justice that time hasn’t beaten out of them yet. Her inability to engage vs Corbyn’s obvious relish in engaging went down well.

I can’t see this hook up with the DUP lasting long and the Tories will continue infighting. TM will be gone by the Autumn at the latest. How ironic that one outcome of this mess is that Labour won’t be ripping themselves apart any more.

                                        interesting times.

This is going to put the kibosh on power sharing in NI. How can the Govt maintain the role of independent adjudicator when they are in bed with one side? Not exactly in the national interest is it?
