Thank God for Amazon Prime. House guest arrives tomorrow and the air bed has gone missing!

The 20 litres of Old Rosie should be settled by now, might have to do some quality testing. But this evening is the Christmas Pub Quiz at The Mouse. I’ll be meeting Betty Stogs there for sure ??

              My prediction.

There will be a transition deal where much will remain the same (even if words are used to make it seem all things to all sides). I think that much we already know.

At the start of that, even if nothing else triggers it sooner, there will be an election. The outcome of that will decide a lot of the final direction we will take. I am predicting the Tories will implode despite themselves (they can’t help it) and a more left of centre coalition (even if it is a wholly Labour party one) will take over. How left of centre depends how much the Lib Dems have to be involved.

We will end up with a “Norway” type situation where cannot economically afford to be wholly out but politically cannot be wholly in. OK so it’s the worst of both worlds but it will be sold on the premise that we can easily pull the plug at any time. TBH I would be quite happy with that as the best outcome of a terrible decision (in my view).

Well said Dan. I had high hopes for her when she was the last one standing (and I am no Tory), but it seems she can only operate in a tightly controlled environment which this isn’t. Seems she was just the best of a bad bunch. I can say that about Corbyn too. I can vote in leadership contests and I didn’t vote for any of them as I didn’t think any of them were up to it (but I did vote for the deputy). It’s the only time in my life I’ve not voted even though I live in a safe constituency.

BL, you are quite right about the SWP but they weren’t the ones on prime time telly with huge posters peddling their nonsense and Farage was. TBH I’d forgotten all about the SWP even existing. Also I don’t think we need to be “BBC” about this and be scrupulous about quoting all the idiots. I most certainly didn’t take Eds example as calling out “the right” but calling out extremists in general.

So in the spirit of theres more unites us than divides us, I think we are all agreed that rightly or wrongly we are leaving the EU, it’s now all about how it’s handled. Both in the negotiations and in uniting the country. However I fear that the ongoing rift in the Tory party (and would probably be true of Labour if they were in) is helping neither with the pot being thoroughly stirred by some of the media.

I don’t know if any of you saw the Channel 4 documentary, Grayson Perry: Divided Britain were he visited pro-Brexit and pro-Remain parts of the country and made 2 pots based on what he heard from both sides. I’ve seen them at the Arnolfini and you can’t tell which is which, the values represented are very much the same.

I’m not going to get into the we shouldn’t have argument, my views are well known. That bit is done and dusted.

However it was the slimmest of majorities and the leavers must bring the remainers with them. Calling them remoaners doesn’t help, neither does you lost, suck it up.

Jumping on any scrutiny or challenging a particular approach as trying to scupper the whole thing is ridiculous. I can see why they wanted the Henry VIII powers (to get things through quickly) but these are politicians, it will be abused again and again. Look at the porkies we’ve been told already since the process began.

I cannot see how a “hard” Brexit could be anything but bad for the country. Yes we would survive, of course we would, but it wouldn’t be a pleasant experience. I am also dubious that we will get any wonderful trade deals from the rest of the world. All I can see in front of me is the same as the decade behind me, except there are no more libraries or public toilets to shut or bus routes to slash.

I’m afraid that a dose of pragmatism is going to be needed by the extreme Brexiteers in the same way remainers are being told to suck it up. Yes we are leaving but no it’s not going to be in the way you wanted.

TBH if I was my kids age (19 – 26) I would be looking at how to get out of here and I think they probably are. Brexit or not I don’t like the way this country is heading. Mean spirited and out to make a quick buck out of someone else seems to sum it up.

It’s a dogs dinner, but it always was going to be. We were told there was a plan, we now know there isn’t. We were told impact research had been done in excruciating detail, it hasn’t. The cabinet is divided. The same can be said of all parties except the Lib Dems who have always been clear what they want.

One issue is it was a Yes or No question (but it couldn’t be anything else) so the various factions are claiming the result as vindication for their particular views. Look at the politicians they go to these days for comments. They were the loonies they used to go to for extreme comments.

re point c), as I understand it it makes a No Deal a possibility if the deal is rejected by parliament and another can’t be done in time. I find it hard to believe that anyone concerned about sovereignty also voted to allow a handful of people draconian powers. We are a parliamentary democracy (and always had sovereignty anyway). If the Europeans can manage to get the deal through their parliament in time why can’t we?

The Irish question may have been better handled had the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland been in the cabinet. But TM wouldn’t do that as then the Welsh and Scots would have to be included too (and indeed they were promised they would be). She was obsessed with the leave / remain split and appointing leavers to certain key positions, no matter how suitable they were for that job. Of course it’s all worse now as she wasted 6 months on an uncalled for election that made her position weaker.

I believe there will be a deal as Europe will be hurt as well as us if there isn’t one but it cannot be as good as it is now. People are obsessed with tariffs but when the pound plummeted by 20% BMW didn’t go running to the chancellor demanding she do something (which is what we were told they would do if a tariff was imposed). It’s the paperwork and delays that will be the killer for European wide supply chain businesses, like Airbus locally here.

Then there’s security, universities and research, pharma, air transport, reciprocal health, visas  etc. It’s much, much more than WTO or not but that’s all they want you to hear.

Bloody typical EE. Looks like Vodaphone and O2 are just as bad.

I’ve been on Three since I’ve had a smart phone and I’m glad I have. They always seems less fuss.

On Three WiFi calling is via an app if your phone doesn’t have it built in. No mention of it having to be a monthly contract either.

The process is you login to the Microsoft site with your MS account and enter the product key. MS then works out what exact version the key applies to and asks you what language etc.

It then starts a download of the installer which runs in the background (you can keep an eye on progress via the system tray).

On first running it will ask you for the product key again so it can activate and whether you want open docs or MS formats as the default.

All the sellers say you must use the key within 24 hours and you must follow the process i.e. don’t try and use it on your own installer. Why I don’t know. They are clearly sailing close to the wind but as Microsoft check the key and provide the installer (I think it may be customised in some way) and link the key to your MS account it must be legitimate if with restrictions.

Microsoft do all sorts of licences for the same product. Indeed in the Corporate world we found we sometimes had to buy 2 licences. If you had a virtual machine running on a server that needed an Office licence. OK, fair enough, but so did the PC accessing that virtual machine!

EDIT just been talking to someone I provided a key and instructions for a while ago. He waited a week or two before following the process and it worked just fine.

Amazingly the more rural of my Cornish family do have FTTC.

My late Uncle bought a derelict farm with the proceeds from selling the filling station and restored all the buildings to a habitable condition. They’re in a bowl shaped depression with the farmhouse above and my cousin in the Long Barn has FTTC installed. I am going down in the New Year to distribute it wirelessly.

I’ll probably use a Ubiquiti Mesh so that both indoor and outdoor areas are all in one big seamless network. Now her kids have grown up, my cousin has started renting the barn out in the summer. I can easily create an isolated guest network for their use. They live in a collection of summerhouses when renting and the Mesh should have more than enough guts to penetrate.

It will transform all their communications. Mobile phone coverage is very dodgy but they can start using WiFi calling (I tested that myself back in the summer). The savings by disposing of all but one landline minus the cost of increasing their mobile contracts add up to a pay back period of about a year.

Bob, the Warsteiner went down just right with the curry wurst. The ferries to north Amsterdam leave from that side of the Centraal station, so when we went to the A’dam lookout tower I got a chance for a repeat performance. Went for a Krakauer that time. Wonderful. Free ferries – can you imagine that in central London?

BL – Soup is a “New England” IPA and a Yank in the bar confirmed this is exactly how it’s meant to be. It looks like it’s from the nearest canal but its just like any other beer to drink, and very good if you like modern IPAs. Like Manuel it’s from Barcelona but I’ve found I can get it in cans from the Wild Beer bar (and brewery) at Bristol docks.

De Wildeman in Amsterdam is the place to go for craft beer. Once a barrel is gone it’s replaced by something different from all over Europe and North America. It’s where I discovered Bock – Bob will remember that I’m sure and the Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier and Rauchbier. Hmm, resisting going to the EasyJet site…

I’ve used all sorts. I used to operate on the theory that the more expensive may be more trustworthy, then I thought all I’m risking is less than a tenner, and as I’m using PayPal in fact I’m not risking anything!

So if I was buying right now it’d be this one http://tinyurl.com/y73y3auh but it’ll probably sell out by the time you get there. Just go for anything advertising something like “Microsoft Office 2016 pro plus product key and download link” and use PayPal.

I’ve not had a minutes trouble and I’ve bought 15 this year and nearly as many W10 Pro keys.

Having spent a lot of time in RM and Parcelforce Mail Centres I can testify to the damage that the machinery can do, but it’s usually to badly packaged items (some of the things I’ve seen you wouldn’t believe). But sheer volume this time of year doesn’t help.

Bob, use your noodle. If the postie was going to pinch the contents you wouldn’t get a box that looked like it’d been investigated. You wouldn’t get anything. He probably sped off because the time pressure this time of year is unbelievable. If you ever get a chance to visit your local Mail Centre do it. You’ll not see it at it’s busy times but you will get an idea of the scale of the operation.

If I’m sending anything of value I always pay the extra for the appropriate insurance and get proof of postage.

“Signed For” only gets you a signature at the end, in transit it’s dealt with like any other packet. I almost never bother with it.

If you want proper tracked handling then you need Special Delivery Guaranteed, what used to be known as Registered Post but with guaranteed next day delivery.  Everyone that touches it “signs” for it – in my day on the counter it was paper and quill pen ? My ink pad and thump it down date stamp was my signature (they were traceable to a person) and special bags were wired shut and delivered to special secure areas of the sorting office.

That’s why it costs so much more, human being interaction isn’t cheap. Throw it into a sack which is then emptied into a machine is a lot cheaper as no skill is involved.

BTW you can write “Fragile” on a packet all you like, in the middle of a sack no-one can read it. If it’s fragile, package it appropriately. If you shake it and it moves, try again. I keep some (collapsed) Amazon boxes & packing hanging about, especially the ones laptops and HDDs come in.

What I’ve said about the Post Office / Royal Mail / Parcelforce system applies equally to all the third parties. You get what you pay for.

Who do I use? For sub “parcel” size packets I use Royal Mail 1st Class with appropriate insurance. For parcels I use Parcel2Go to see what’s about and I don’t just look at the cheapest as often not much more can buy a better service (it’s the add-ons folks).

Looking at my order history, for parcels containing run of the mill stuff it’s almost always My Hermes 2-5 days with me taking it to the local Co-op store. In my experience it’s always been 2 days.

For anything of value it’s usually ParcelForce next day pre 12 with them collecting from me. In my experience they’ve never let me down.

Hours of snow but unfortunately it was after hours of rain so the only place it pitched was on the car. Which has now frozen solid.

It’s due to get colder after sunrise tomorrow!

Heard from Bangor it had snowed a lot on Friday and today but it didn’t pitch much. Daughters friend is from Singapore, it’s the first snow she’s ever experienced.
