Thanks Dave, you may well get a message nearer the time, won’t be for a while though.
With Google Assistant coming to the Shield K1 and the voice control via the joypad I have no need for either device.
Mum is getting the new Fire Stick with Alexa voice control built in so I’ll see how that goes for her and maybe look at one of the Dot if she feels the need for more options.
There are a few dead spots in mum’s place where wifi just won’t work so when funds allow I’ll be getting one of the access points Dave recommends often to see if that does the job.
My Pi Zero W came just now.
Sadly I won’t have much time to play with it before it goes to it’s new home on Sunday. Mums’ getting it for Mothers Day. A few months back she mentioned that she wanted to learn some basic programming, so now she’ll be able to. 🙂
Mum has the plus, that got it on Sunday. :good:
OK Nolan, why do you have a helmet camera?
Because of the Royal Mail vans and lorries! (I forgot the main depot that’s almost within spitting distance).
I get loads of terrible drivers near me, there’s the bus depot down the road, a very busy junior school on the same road but opposite my estate and nearly every main car dealer (and some posh ones) within a mile or so.
I also get the selfish numpties who are tight to pay a few £ to park when they watch Cardiff City at home, so they park where they feel like it.
So I get badly driven buses, badly parked and driven cars by the junior school and people on test drives who are nervous as hell. And car transporters seemingly abandoned in the road for hours at a time which block one lane of 2 main roads.
And people ask me why I have a helmet camera!
Must admit I’ve never seen this in Windows, either. When the Internet drops, I get ‘Conneted: no Internet’, with full access still to my local devices.
Ditto
All my photos and video are backed up at the actual size, always have been.
Because of the dual cameras on the G5 about half the photos are 8mp, the others 16. I always record video in 4K, unless I know it’s going to be longer than 5 minutes.
The staff in Tesco were bemused when the £25 card went through at £20, no promotional material anywhere to be seen in store.
My last 2 phones have both had 2 years worth of Google Drive storage included, very handy for a snap happy person like me.

Check how much you actually use of your included allowances, even £10 a month might be a waste of money if you only use a fraction of your allowance.
The Shield controller is amazing. Really comfy and connected with no issues. Also really responsive.
As you’d expect it works seamlessly with Portal and other games that support a controller. Lego Batman:Beyond Gotham is one I tried and it just works.
I also tried Asphalt 8 and that wasn’t happy at all, massive slowdowns. I think it might be to do with the massive update it did before starting, hopefully a reboot will sort that problem.
The always on microphone is, depending on your viewpoint, brilliant or terrible. For me it’s brilliant, especially as Google Assistant is coming to the Shield devices soonish.
Minor annoyance is the lack of any indication when charging or if the battery is low. I say minor because you can check on the K1 for battery status.
For £60 it’s expensive, luckily it’s very, very good and feels really sturdy so it’s so worth the money. Just. At £45 I’d recommend it all day, even £50. £60 does feel like a bit of a gouge though.
Had a small windfall so I caved in and ordered the 2017 Shield Controller. Due tomorrow.
Now need to find some £ for the Half Life 2 games………
My X220 is an i5, is yours the i7?
Drez, I considered trying it on my X220, decided against it as I wanted it to play properly.
Steve, the Tegra store redirects to Google Play now, used to be a stand alone store of its own. As you found out Portal is one of the Tegra exclusives.
Do you need all the minutes/texts and data?
I use hardly anything when out and about, tiny amounts of data usually. Yesterday wa the first time in months I had to make a conventional phone call, they are usually done over hangouts or whatsapp.
I’ve used just over £10 of credit in about 5 months, that’s typical for me. (3 PAYG).
Get a load of free SIM cards from the big networks, try them in the areas important to you then go on price.
There are only a few actual networks, loads of MVNO though.
I had something similar a few years back, turned out to be a failing PSU.
If no one else needs them I’ll gladly take them off you, some of my old machines could use a refresh and I’ve mislaid the odd floppy.
