WOF, that’s what the plan is.
I’ve tried Geekbanch on Mint and the results are random. Ranging from 500 single core/1068 multi to 1116 single/1998 multi.
I have no idea what’s going on but it seems like Geekbench doesn’t like the new rig. :negative:
Just about to try some rendering so will report back when that’s done.
WOF, not sure if anything was running in the background. It’s entirely possible as it was when I was jumping through the many Windows hoops.
I’ll run it on Linux later.
That’s part of the plan for this weekend. Along with trying kdenlive.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>On Windoze there was only the normal h265, not the QSV one.</p>
Haven’t done any Linux rendering on the new rig yet.
Much faffing about with Windoze convinced me to Linux it.
After a few OpenShot renders.
The file was 13 minutes, not the 9 I thought it was. I used the H.264 QSV, it was just H.264 on the X220. The same settings as the mega long render on the X220 (4K, 60 FPS, High quality took 49 minutes. Dropping the FPS to 30 took 32 minutes. Dropping the quality to medium took 34 minutes.
I can’t tell the difference between the 60 and 30 fps high quality renders, I think I can see a tiny difference between them and the 30 fps medium render but I’m not 100% certain.
Installing Mint was a PINTA, it would boot fine of a flash drive (after some tinkering with the UEFI settings) but it would fail the installation. Turns out it hated some of my flash drives.
It arrived just before 9, been doing updates and the like since then.
Ran Geekbench and I was disappointed. Then I remembered the performance profiles, checked that and it was set to balanced, new profile created and all is good. :good:
It gets 1239 on the single core test, 3196 on the multi core and 5980 on OpenCL.
Ed,the X220 was old when I got it.
It might be 9 years old in total. It’s solid though and just keeps working.
I’ll never get rid of it, it’ll probably outlive me!
I’ll render the same clip on the new rig when it arrives for a comparison.
WOF, it’s going to be a LOT better than my X220, it took about 3 1/2 hours to render a 9 minute video in 4K.
Thanks Ed, I will have a look at kdenlive, I’m open to anything that’s free and I’m not stuck on OpenShot, it just ticks the boxes for what I want too do.
I’ve ordered it, should have it tomorrow, just in time for the Welsh lockdown.
Thanks Dave.
Pretty much what I thought but I’m not that up to date with PC specs so my head was hurting after all the research.
Always good to have another view point if your not sure. 👍 :good:
I like Tom Scott’s video on VPN’s – Youtube.
The vast majority of his stuff is very good.
When it comes to a VPN I use it for things like banking, just as an extra ‘peace of mind’ layer of security even when at home.
As Dave and Drez said they are very handy when on free, public WiFi.
They can be very cheap as well, Nord do deals often that really cuts the cost back.
It’s awesome.
I wouldn’t buy a brand new phone/laptop without it.
My Chromebook charges vie USB C, does HDMI out and all the other normal stuff. It charges real quick with the supplied power brick (about an hour from near empty) and still lasts about 10 hours on a charge. It’s at least 4 years old.
If it is your birthday John, have a good one, if it isn’t, still have a good one. :good:
All over the place down South America.
That’s a great film though,Ed.
Apart from being the mistress of a drug fuelled, flatulent wannabe artist, she seems like any other woman that gets caught up in the power, wealth and status of nutters, just look at Trump. Or rather don’t, you might catch stupidity.
She was an early amateur film maker, much of the ‘private’ footage of the time is either her filming or someone else using her equipment.
Ed, everyone knows they went to Argentina, or there abouts.
Nice one Dave. :good:
Good to hear that Bob is making progress.
Please wish him my best for the next op.
The tracker is now for sale, I only wan’t £10 and postage, you will need a subscription though.
Subs range from £10 a month to £85 for a year. It hasn’t been used for maybe 10 months and mums’ fella won’t be going anywhere without close supervision in the future.
It has a case and is near perfect condition, charges and holds a charge fine. No instructions but has the original box, instructions/ manuals are available online.
The coverage is global for the sub cost and worked well when they were abroad.
I’ve not bothered with ebay yet as you have to transfer the account over to the new owner, you can’t de-register the device as far as I can tell. Allegedly my details aren’t passed on to the new account owner.
I’d use it in my car if I didn’t already have a tracking device in it.
Thanks again Dave.
I need to get an idea of budget from mum, no point looking at the good stuff if the budget is £30 a camera.
The house is a fair size bungalow but it’s a strange layout. There’s a front door that’s hardly ever used, a alley down the side with a gate, patio doors onto the patio at the back and a side door onto the same patio. There’s also a side door at the bottom of the drive (which is the main door into the house from the front) and a door into the garage right next to that.
Then the garden which is a good size and backs onto a main road. There’s a solid gate there that’s always locked and a gate on the alley that’s locked and not used much.
There’s a lot of doors and only 4 windows to cover.
Thanks all.
Ed, the house has warning stickers all over the place but they are due a refresh due to bleaching from the sun. There’s also a dummy camera pointing down the drive from the garage.
The WiFi signal is good all over the property apart from in the garden room which isn’t an issue for the cameras. Mum’s broadband is Virgin cable and is overkill for her, IIRC it’s 100 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up.
Dave, the whole power over Ethernet is probably too much for me as would be getting into and clambering around the loft due to my various maladies.
I’ve found some Blink XT2 (Amazon owned) and they seem to be almost perfect for what I need to do. They are totally wireless, small and have a free cloud backup. I’d like SD slots as well but I can’t find anything else that comes close, yet. The cameras are small enough for me to tuck under the small canopy that covers the garage entrance and the side door, I might even be able to put one inside the dummy camera that’s already mounted. The indoor ones can be hooked up to phone chargers so the bats can be saved for the outdoor ones, I don’t believe the 2 year battery life.
The specs look decent, I’d like a wider field of view but I’m almost certain that 110° would be enough for my needs. I also like the 2 way audio function.
More reading to be done tomorrow.
