Thanks for the replies. After much searching I found the said article – in a copy of Computer Active. To be honest I read more into it than I should have. It said that there were people still doing it using the instal prog and I interpreted that as being still active -must do some more digging. Seems to be not a million miles away from what Mark did.
Dave, thanks to your guidance some many months ago I already have a USB stick loaded with Mint
I got caught on Ebay buying keys some time ago but finally got it sorted. Don’t want that again. Can anyone suggest a reputable seller? Perhaps not!

Hi Boris
Some suggestions there. Thanks. Tried PDFEscape but appears to be a purchase deal. Also tried PDFExchange which is free but only partially suitable. Did not know that LibreOffice might work. I will try that. Thanks for your efforts.

Hi Bob – like the comment about all change now. On your other point, cash machines do not dispense loose change. A fist full of tenners will not help. The only ” solution” will be to round up all prices to the next pound.

I have nothing against contactless per se but I do dislike the banks who will do anything to force more cash out of us. When Credit cards came in they were free and a win win win situation. The banks won because they did not have to process cheques (a laborious job) so they must have saved colossal sums of money (although this might be off-set by the cost of giving credit). The traders won because they did not have to process cheques either, saving them expense. Finally the consumer won for the same reason. But the banks insisted on charging the traders who in turn passed it on to the consumer who pays for the privilege of saving the others money. In the end the government has had to legislate to stop the rip-off. Something similar will happen to contactless transactions. If nothing else, it will be an excuse to abandon cheques which they have been trying to do for years. We will live to regret it – well some of us/you will. Even so, I guess I will conform sooner or later.

Thanks Duke. Tried those but will go back and try again. In fact I must have switched some leccy gussler of because it lasts two days now. Ever onwards.
Damn thing keeps vibrating now, but I might have figured what causes it – a slim pencil slipped into the jacket presses on the volume button which reduces volume to nil and triggers vibrate. Just one of life’s little irritations.

New phone does all I ask and a whole lot I don’t ask. The battery runs down in a little over a day just sitting in my pocket. I have shut down some apps that are shutdownable but that leaves many that refuse to go. I am sure this is part of the problem. The old phone would go a couple of weeks if not used which was great because I only use it for emergencies and a few texts.
So the question is can I get rid of the rubbish? It would appear not – at least not for someone with my technical inability – but if you know an idiot proof way please tell me.

OT: Where will you get the hot dogs?
Don’t they grow on trees? Where do the supermarkets get them?
PS Like the back garden.

Problem solved the old fashioned way by removing the SD card and slipping it into the PC SD slot. Since the new phone connects faster than I can type this it was a simple drag and drop exercise. It was the old phone which would not connect.
I tried to do it the modern way but that needed a google account and every user name (no matter how obscure) I tried was “unavailable”. I don’t believe it, and I was not going to accept their suggestion. So, waving a metaphorical two fingers at them, I went back to the old way. Incidentally, i also use real money, eat with a knife and fork and do most of the other things we used to do in the dark ages. When the world implodes, as it surely will, with a massive power cut, then I will get out my matches, light the old wood burning camp fire and feed hot dogs to the hungry.
Anyway, once again I thank you all who showed sufficient interest and concern to try and help. You can come to the front of the BBQ queue.

Thanks all. Went into local O2 this morning to get an Alcatel pixi4 or a Sony XperiaE5. Didn’t realise how big they are until I tried them in my pocket (perhaps I have small pockets) then spied an LGK4 (4.5 inch screen but supposed to be 4G). Read a number of reviews which rate it poor to middling but at least it works and fits my pocket in all senses of the word. Best of all, O2 recovered my cash balance for me and killed the old phone. Just waiting for the SIM to register. 88 page instruction manual – its only a phone not a 747. It will cost more than the phone to print it out so I will see if I can load it onto the phone.
Should have said it was £50

Cheers PMan. Don’t know whether my old galaxy Ace constitutes full fat or just beef dripping. Anyway, I only phone and text so I guess speed is not of the essence. I was looking at the 5 inch which is probably why it is sooo expensive!!
Just come across Motorola E3 which is more expensive but might be a bit better. I suspect it is old tech but probably not cause me a problem

Further to above, how bad (or good) is the Alcatel Pixi4 3G from Argos for a tad under £50 or Alcatel 4G under £$100?

Perhaps some one will break cover. Personally I think BA is possibly one of the worlds least favourite airlines and have done for the past 30 years

The “Send Later” message sounds like aTBird extension appropriately named “Send Later” which gives a little more flexibility for sending emails. I have been using it ever since the old Outlook was withdrawn . How you got it is a mystery, but as extensions go, I like it.

Not Really. It is a test of mental agility – something that will never be “Old School” and is sadly lacking now. I do not play computer games, but I suspect that the good players can out think a ‘phone any day.

Done. Downloaded and installed. Backup run. Now I have to wait for an emergency LOL

Thanks all.
I will have a look at MOZBACKUP on the strength of that even if the website says “USE AT OWN RISK”. After all, you cannot all be wrong can you? :good:

Thanks all. My faith has not been misplaced. I was afraid that some sort of macro would be required but my brain is too slow nowadays. I have already tried the “excelforbeginners” site plus a few others that promised the world but failed to deliver. I will email the links over to her. She is much more with it than me. I am not totally sure what she is aiming for because I cannot see a use for a continually self-updating spreadsheet unless she wants to re-programme all the arrival and departure boards at the local airport?. For anything else I would go with Robin and just update when the occasion arises. But there we go, Dad has some funny ideas at times?

Still using Office 97. Under W7. Also ran it under latest OS but went back to W7. If and when MS make it incompatible I will move over to Libra(?)

Thanks Robin. I might have to go down that road and get a set of UK keyboard stickers to put the ” and the @ where they are supposed to be.

Thanks ED. The OS is W7, but I will check the hibernation situation anyway. I have tried changing leads and connections but to no avail. Yesterday it was shutting down every two or three minutes for about 15 minutes.
Edit
I suppose the fault whatever it is could also be why I have been having problems connecting to BTinternet – mentioned in an earlier post
