Time to wrap this up. Yes, I followed WoF’s link from up above, and it worked.

Never had the “wrong page selected” message again, so I WILL blame it on something amiss with the paper detection that seems OK now.

      Cheers all.

It rather looks as if this is a non runner for me.

No matter how I set the choices associated with update manager, it fails to show itself on reboot next day.

A couple of days ago, no shield, open update manager and I find three updates awaiting install. First I change the choice again (2 choices, two possibles, so four permutations, and I have tried them all) then carry out updates. That done, the green shield sits there. Later it flags up another. Install that. All OK. Next day, no shield again.

Must just remember to open update manager myself daily!

When I was about 28, after a week long session at work, bending down, adjusting burners, standing up to do gas analysis, my knees started to ache badly. I hobbled about for about three months before they eventually returned to normal. Six years later, after two weeks labouring for my Father in law who was installing a new fireplace for us, the knee problem recurred. At the time, I had just found out that the then wife was having it off with a so called pal. No doubt this was a factor as well. When I saw the GP, he laughed and said “A young man like you”. When he put his hand on my knee, and I straightening it out, his face changed as he felt the “creak  creak  creak” of the joint.

Eventually I saw the rheumatologist privately. He gave me a thorough examination all over, and said that it was probably “Psoriatic arthritis”. I had a couple of patches of psoriasis in L forearm and L calf. He suggested the matrimonial problems were likely an aggravating factor. He proscribed me a one month course of Valium together with painkillers to be taken as I needed. The knee arthritis continued for the next 15 years before largely subsiding. Arthritis and skin problems are common bedfellows it would appear. I get small recurrences of the psoriasis, which is quickly quelled with a slight application of a steroid cream. However, over the years I have also suffered with eczema, with it getting slightly worse as time passes. In April this year I went to my GP complaining about it. I already have aqueous cream for washing with, but he gave me something new (to me) called “Zero Double”. After about 3 weeks of its application, I suddenly realised I was COMPLETELY clear of the problem! Something of a WONDER CURE.

Planeman, MAYBE it would help your skin problem.

I think I have been lead astray a little. I think there was a problem with page size selection on the printer itself, I changed to A4, put A4 paper in and did a simple print of existing document. Worked OK. I then replaced the A3 paper and reset to A3 and was able to print again. (I spent half the morning chasing this, though not 100% certain).

When you want to scan an A3 document, you select scan, file type (jpg, pdf or why?) then where you want the finished file saving (SD card). next a little animation leads you by the nose, for first half, then another animation tells you to rotate thro 180 degrees. Then you scan 2nd half, and the PRINTER stitches them together to create one file which it writes to the SD card. I take that to PC, and can then Print copies.

If I open the scan in Libre Office draw, SO FAR, I can not get any print other than A4 (I need to recheck if the “wrong paper” comes up, or if it was a printer problem).

If I convert to a pdf, I can open that with evince, and specify A3. The print out has an A4 sized print in the centre of the A3 paper

I will study WOFs link later to see what that offers.

Meanwhile, I have kludged the problem. These are two site and site location plans, bearing details of previous application, and various planning office marks. I took my ORIGINALS, attacked them with snopake to delete unwanted stuff and make minor amendments. Then I rescanned them both, afterwards printing the required four copies of each.

So, a bodge solution, but I still hope for a proper answer.

Yesterday, I even fired up the Windoze laptop, hoping the HP windoze software would provide answers. I assumed the “two scans and join” would be handled by that, but it seems the printer doing it for you is the only route.

Good for now, but hopefully I can spend more time once this lot is back with the planners, maybe tomorrow PM.

I will report back  if I succeed.

            Thanks all, Les.

Edp, maybe I can clarify things. First I scanned the A3 original in two halves, which the printer itself stitches together.

I then printed out that file, which was perfect in A3.

I then opened the file in Draw, did my “rubbing out” and tried to print. In the print dialogue, it is fixed at A4 and greyed out. That prints an A4 in the centre of an A3 page.

However under Edit —  Printer settings, I can select A3. When I try to print, under settings it still shows A4 and is greyed out. Clicking Print,  the printer says “wrong paper size” and aborts the print.

I think the answer will lie somewhere in Libre settings, but so far I can not find anything.

I don’t have LibreCad, so can not comment, but will look at your links.

              Thanks, Les.

On the face of it, the method I thought of is unlikely to work.

I only need to deal with two A3 docs, and I have scans of the previous originals. You have to purchase from planning office, and they are not cheap (captive market).

Anyway, today  I scanned them. The 7500A give a little animation, showing you how to scan half of it, then you remove it, rotate through two 90 degrees (turn it around) and scan the second half. It then joins then up for jou, and loads the resultant on to your  SD card. I then printed out the .jpeg file to check, and got an A3 facsimile. Good.

I then opened it in Libre office, and stuck white lines and rectangles in all the right places, “grouped it” and tried to print it out. I could get an A4 size in the middle of the A3 sheet only.

More digging and through the main edit, I was able to tell it it had A3 paper. Now all settings looked OK, but when I told it to print, I found I had two blank sheets, with the little display telling me “Wrong size paper”, with print being cancelled!

It looks as if it will print a doc the WAS save as A3, but wont allow printing in a different size. I exported as a PDF, but got the same result.

                Other suggestions?  Les.

Edp, I MUST correct you on one important matter. NOT Indiana as over in You Know Where.

DUCATI Indiana – a motorcycle! There was an Italian group, and the owner decided to add an English version as an off shoot. He has no interest in migrating it. No idea if he will migrate the Italian one either, – I suspect not.

A very rare motorcycle, a Ducati intended for the US market (hence the name); A wonderful ‘bike but a total commercial failure. Some were sold off here, some in Australia, some on the Italian home market with not many in the US.

Because of its general layout, I may find it just right when I get too old and infirm to manage the current Ducati (Cagiva actually, but essentially the same).

I have a pal who MAY be able to help. I will try your suggestions on him.

                  Thanks. Les.

I did as Tippon suggested (had already looked) and no upgrade options for Android as far as I can tell. So that means I am stuffed? No way to “persuade” it?

                    Maybe dustbin time.

Meanwhile, I did prevent Firefox updates (it must ask me first) and I now switch on 30 mins early. Needless to say it has booted up at its (normal??) steady speed. Updates at shutdown every time, and of course whilst watching F1, practice and race highlights, TV reception has been OK.

It won’t last, but only one more session ’till March or thereabouts.

Not sure what happened here, but I replied to this on Friday, but now it is gone!

Maybe it got lost with a minor spelling edit, otherwise clueless.

The reply was to say Thanks Edp.

When I first went looking for   —edit/preferences etc, the options were greyed out! However there was another grey icon, centre stage saying a new version of update manager was available, so I took it. After that I was rewarded with another 7 updates, including a new kernel, followed by a reboot. More updates later as well.

Strangely the icon is missing again (and I have left “only show a tray icon” both checked and unchecked). If I check the icon, it will appear, but is gone next time. If I do not check the icon, the same thing seems to happen. It seems a slightly misleading choice to me.

The main thing is, I am satisfied that update manager is going and looking, and WILL let me know if updates are waiting.

In reality, unless you use a battery and resistor, or an old design series or shunt controller, you are getting PWM. If not at the fan, a bit higher up the food chain. PWM is used all over the place, in PCs and almost everywhere else, because it is energy efficient. If you need say a steady 3v DC for the fan speed at a particular moment, then you could have a short pulse of 6v, then an equal length pulse of zero volts, giving the required average on 3v. In extremes cases (unlikely with a little fan), the combination of higher voltage and the very rapid voltage rise can overcome the insulation of the device and it is RIP. (Inverter use for three phase motor control works with a PWM output following the general sine wave shape of the “natural” voltage curve, but of course with higher instantaneous voltage level. Some older three phase motors after many decades of “normal” use were found to fail rapidly when changed tp inverter drive.

Of course, if your little fan is a bit sluggish, the the higher pulsed voltage may just “kick it up the you know what”, and get it turning.

PWM or DC, does it matter? Maybe.

Tippon, yes, you are probably right. I sell my three phase converter plans through Ebay, and I always collect the buyer’s name and email address from the Paypal notification. I then email the buyer extra stuff (FAQ etc) as noted in my listing, and give them my email so that they can contact me with any queries when they start the build.

But Buyer to seller, probably not. Only Ebay messaging.

Edp, I could not find anything related to update in the menu (Software Manage, Software sources and Packet manager are there of course).

For want of something better, I opened a terminal and typed “Update”, getting this

                              les@les-SN78S:~$ update

Command ‘update’ not found, did you mean:

                              command ‘lupdate’ from deb qtchooser
                              command ‘xupdate’ from deb libxml-xupdate-libxml-perl

JB, when you sell something, you and the buyer get each other’s details (usually via Paypal), certainly the seller gets the buyers details.

Bob, NO, not selling and moving back. I like the Isle of Man. A VERY good section of the VMCC (vintage bikes), very few motorists who try to kill motorcyclists. Some will move over to let you pass. Back in the UK, if they did that, you knew they were going to pull out as you did overtake, so you never accepted.

Of course this place has problems. Planning controls are CRAZY. My recent application was refused after 6 months, because the planning officer CLAIMED it was possible, if driving down the lane, to see my extension’s flat roof. Frankly you can not see it, but here bureauocrats are far more numerous, stupid and “god almighty” than in UK, where you get refusal in 3 weeks, or you can go ahead (as I understand it).

However, today I had a minor victory. I had an interview with the P.O., gave him two pages of criticism of my planning application’s treatment, there lack of communication, and their “piddly” reason for refusal.

After that, I showed him a photo of a building with a dummy pitched roof, then offered a new plan with the end walls pitched, slates on top (say 18″ wide only) and retaining my now out of sight flat room.,

He started chuckling, then laughing, then went to show it to his colleagues. Returned and said “That should be OK”

The sting in the tail is that I still have to put in a new P.A. with all its costs and paperwork, but at least SWMBO is a bit happier.

A pal applied before me, and his application to extend a very small cottage is “pending”. My understanding is that he may only extend by 50%, but there is a minimum size for a dwelling. He needs +68%, so is stuck in a limbo of regulation!

                                  Madness.

WoF, remember I am a bit dim here. At start up (I assume), an update manager is launched which then access the WWW, and either shows a (green ?) tick in a little shield, or if updates available, “something blue (an X ?) in the shield instead. Reading what Edp said, and trying to summon up some brains, then it seems that the update manager is not being launched. No idea why, but I WANT IT BACK! My only guaranteed way is to reinstall, but that is too much. There WILL be a way, but I don’t know what it is.

Edp, no luck. Yes, I can use synaptic OK, it is simply that I need to regularly remember to open it, “Reload” and if anything has changed, reinstall.

Searching for “broken packages” found nothing.

I then searched for “Update manager” and right clicked and selected “mark for reinstallation” everything that had green box, shut down and started again. No little shield.

I then tried every command you suggested in terminal but it did not like “sudo apt-get –fix-broken install” nor “sudo apt-get install -f” nor  “sudo dpkg –configure -a”.

I guess I will just have to keep checking for updates manually.

I asked “ALL4” why I could not get it on my tablet, and likewise on my main Linux PC.They asked for more info, so here is my reply, and their response to it:-

One device I was trying to use was a tablet.:–

A “no-name” tablet, but info from the “Settings” yields the following:-

                                        Quad-core. A64bf1078

                                        Android 5.1.1

                                        Firmware v1.2

                                        Kernal version 3.10.65

                                        wyl@wylyones#5

                                        Build No. Tulip_bf1078-eng 5.1.1

                                        LVY48E 20160401 test keys

When I search with the browser, I get a choice of “Watch in the App”, and “Download the browser”

Selecting the first one then asks me “Did you mean p-name:com.ch4 on demand – but it does nothing else.

Selecting the second yields the message “Not available in your location”

I also have a Linux (Mint 19.2) 64 bit install, my main computer which is kept fully updated. :-

If I go to the All 4 website, click “Watch live”, then select Ch 4 (Junior bake off at this moment) I get a display with “Use adobe flash”

I select this, then “Allow Adobe Flash”

Next I am asked for my log in details. These are accepted, and I see the beginning programme intro. However, there is no further play, merely a rotating arrow suggesting it is about to play.

                                        Play NEVER commences.

I look forward to your suggestions.

No suggestions on the missing little shield? I have tried odd things, but I can’t get it back.

Bob, only a couple of days ago I told Tamara that if Corbin did get in as UK PM, we would see house prices rocket over here as there would be a big influx of people from UK getting out ASAP. Some of the policies espoused by Macdonald are frightening rather more than just the very rich. UK used to have a Brain Drain, if labour do win, they will have a massive drain of people with money from top to middle.

Dave, don’t forget the manx emblem and motto.

“Quocunque Jeceris Stabit” literally translates to “Whithersoever you throw it, it will stand.”

                                            Here’s hoping.
