I think some misunderstanding. When I bought the card, it was because I thought the old one was faulty, but it turned out to be my monitor. I got a new monitor but left the new card in there. However it was just before Christmas that the NEW card failed. I refitted my old card, which as expected was perfectly OK and remains so.

Now a year after purchase, any attempt to get redress thro Ebay would certainly be pointless.

However, it was a new Gigabyte card with purportedly a 3 year guarantee. What I need is suggestions on how to get Gigabyte to replace it, or is that pointless as well?

Cheers, Les, sitting here nursing a migraine.

Tamara obtained her Brit citizenship last year and now expects her first Passport to arrive any day now. She wants to visit a half sister she has never met and who lives in the US. I am afraid she can go THERE on her own. The passport application is different over here on Isle of Man. Drive into Douglas and get forms and ask any questions first. (You can download and print your own forms if you want to save the trip). I told her to get the photo done at a specific photographers, a three generation place where they know what they are doing. Tamara said a photo booth would be OK, but I told her in no uncertain terms NO!  Anyway, she was in Douglas, but instead of going where I said, she went into Boots, found they have a proper setup, so she had then done there. With everything filled in, off to our local post office where we know the postmistress quite well. She looked at the forms and pointed out Tamara had used blue biro, NOT black, so home and do another set. Photo countersigned, and off to PP office next day, where one lady did a bit of pre-checking as the one finishing off had a queue. Everything seemed OK until she got to the photo. She disappeared returning with a special rule, carefully measuring head size etc., and continually “feeling” the surface of the photo. Where did you get it she asked? Boots said Tamara, and I added that I had told her to go up to John Morrison’s. More examination, and confer with the counter, and it was deemed (just) satisfactory. Everything went thro OK after that, and the letter arrived saying it will arrive by post from the UK within 5 days.

Ed, thanks for that. I guessed it would be something like that, in fact “unhold” went thro my mind, but thought better to ask first.

Most strange, only document viewer suitable for opening, the alternatives being GIMP and IMAGE MAGIC. So, in package manager I look for evince. There it is with a yellow sun in the description, but NOT shown as installed. I marked it for installation, installed, and now PDFs will print again.

They were previously opening with document viewer ??? and only last week I was printing OK. I think there was a kernal update last week, so I guess that “did something”, but how it was opening with a programme that was not installed  —  .

The other day upon the stair, I met a man who was not there.

I met him there again today, I really wish he would go away. (J.K.J.  ??)

All this started a few weeks ago when I had intermittent loss of picture. Various components were tried before a graphics card replacement fixed the fault. One suspect had been the 500GB spinner, so I fitted the current, known good/little used 160GB instead. Whilst doing all this I had my ancient La Cie backup spinner fail, but fortunately I had a complete install to copy away safely to another safe place.  I probably successfully reinstalled about 4 times to get to where I am right now.

So, I could simply REINSTALL once more to my now exonerated 500GB spinner, if anybody can suggest an “easy for me” procedure.

              Cheers, Les.

Dan, that seems a better idea. I will go away and think it thro. This really is new territory for me. Don’t want to screw things completely.

Yes, spinner is formatted Ext 4. I managed that “all by myself”.

“Discs” seems to “do things”, but I can now see thanks to Lee that it does a LOT of stuff.

Progress. It took two goes (no idea why), but here is my start up desktop, and clicking the link does the business.

I have a lot to learn, little time left to learn it, and with too many other things to do, I gues I will just need to keep asking. I TRY not to ask the same question twice, though that is not assured. Thanks everybody.

No Lee, you arn’t getting the wrong end of the stick, just exposing my ignorance. Instead of deleting those useless links this morning, I should have navigated to the data drive, then just  closed it. I just re-made the links, shut down and they were “dead”. Opened up “Data”, closed it, and desktop links were active.

I looked in “Discs”, but could find no “mount at boot ” options there. That would be one step better, following Ed’s link’s directions better still, but for now, that is progress.

                    Thanks, Les.

Yesterday when I tried the LINK action, it all seemed to work. I shut down PC to do other stuff. Later, on restart, links were inactive. OK, maybe I did it wrong, by making link, then copying it across. So, I made a fresh link and MOVEd it. Seemed OK, but this morning, again no longer connecting to DATA drive. Following your last linked article, I think I understand why. However, a lot of steps there where a simple mistake could lead me into big trouble. I will read it a couple of times, then either “have a go”, or accept status quo.

Ed, got it. It still needs an extra click to get to stuff, but the “Data” drive is not always visible when doing some tasks (saving), it will save a lot of clicking. I just expected it to be “simple” from the get-go.

When I first considered Mint, somebody here adviseded Cinamon, it tried it, it seemed easy, and generally has been. However, no sooner had I made the move, and most of the voices here said “Use Mate”. Too easy to stay as I am.

                          Thanks yet again.

Does it help if we write 50 cycles per second instead of 50 Hz? It is all to do with the rotational speed of the country’s electrical generators.

Once upon a time, the field (or frame) frequency of TV sets was tied to the mains, but later it was “set free” from mains, but kept at the same nominal frequency, 50cps in the UK, 60 cps (or Hz) in the US.

Then along came colour TV in the ’50s in the US, with a system called NTSC (National television colour spec or something like that). France developed their 819Hz Secam system, we were going to follow something like the US, but then Germany (Telefunken) introduced their PAL system. Phase Alternate Line, where with a bit of clever signal manipulation, the change of the “blue” colour was phase changed every other line. It had long been realised that the colour hue of the US system varied a lot depending on signal strength, weather etc, and this bit of German thinking resolved that problem.

So, the UK largely copied the TFK patents, except that we made our sound channel separation from the vision channel a bit more, 6.0MHz instead of 5.5MHz. This gave the UK a slightly better vision signal. The BEST of all the systems.

So, you would have problems with BOTH the 50/60Hz aspect, as well as completely incompatible “everything else” technical aspects of the  device.

Of course the change from analogue to digital systems (the 1080 thing is part of that) puts the final kybosh on the idea.

Or you could spend LOADSAMONEY on a signals converter.

                                Les.

Oh yes! There is a British Citizenship test.  https://www.gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test  Tamara had to take it (the Manx version has a couple of Isle of Man specific ones, otherwise identical apart from the extra syllabus) and she worked solidly for three months on it. Not sure many of us would pass it without spending a lot of time reading the book.

That plus the language requirements SHOULD help make for more homogeneity in the future.

I think a big factor regarding islamist terrorism stems from the fact that so many muslim immigrants over the previous years have had the man out working and acquiring some english language, whilst wife and mother in law stay in the house with no english contacts whatsoever. When there are kids, they learn English at school, and take over the role of responsible translator for the family. Meanwhile wife and mother in law emotionally dwell entirely in the old country, so have nothing to pass on to the children regarding responsible british life, whilst not understanding anything the kids acquire at school. A recipe for schitzophenic development.

I got 14 out of the 20, but since history was my worst subject, I thought that was good. I got the Jury one wrong, went for 8, which is something like the number used over here.

Firstly, Class 0 materials don’t actually exist – though technically, the requirements are met by being incombustible. Materials such as mineral fibre achieve this, but need some form of support which may be combustible.

40 years ago I did a lot with mineral fibres, mostly the very high temperature high grade types. (Kaowool, Fibrefrax) Not sure if the companies who made cited products  still exist, but these were available both as loose material, rolls of woolen blanket (I still have some) and also RIGID BOARD. Surely that WOULD meet the specification?

And there was the shuttle, ceramic fibre tiles.

Bob, my late sister who we just sent to the fires was a real hoarder. I remember 40 odd years ago, there had been shortages of instant coffee. She thought there was another coming up, so she emptied the shelves when they were full. I think she caused the ensuing shortage! Anyway in the last 12 months since she started to get a little vague (dementia), her DiL and D started a clear out, which she ALLOWED. I heard from her Son in L last Wednesday that they had thrown away about 30 large jars of Nescafe. Just a solid mass at the bottom of the bottles. If you must hoard before the shortage, then be sure to use straight afterwards.

She finished work when her daughter was born in 1959, so they ought to have only moderate assets, but I understand her scrimping and saving, and later turning to stocks and shares, left them in a 7 figure position! Unbelievable.

I have been thinking more about this “JPG” (but bear in mind I really don’t have a clue. Somebody else has sent me an openable copy of eight pages. Each one is two sides  (open book of course), so if SINGLE pages, there would have been 14 pages, not the 12 of dodgy version (first and last side not relevant).

Anyway, going back to my last message, and the layout when viewed in text editor, it occurs to me that if I open each page and copy into a fresh document WITH NO spacing between end of P1 and beginning of P 2 and so on, I would have one contiguous entity with a header and a footer. At present only the first has a header, and only the last a footer. They must surely require rebuilding, but they were clearly separate.

I will try again later, even though I now have the stuff I needed.
