i think that as we were seeing blue screens before any update was attempted the HDD is caput. also, when i tried then fully resetting windows from within windows and wiping everything it was then stuck in a boot loop.

she is now happy for me to keep it so i will look into a new drive.

if i replace it with an ssd i can buy a 3.5 to 2.5 adaptor. however the drive goes into a caddy before installing in the PC. will an ssd fitted in to an adaptor then slot into the caddy? the caddy is a quick release one that you pull the side slightly and the little pins of the caddy come out of the screw holes in the drive. would this work?

the old drive is 1tb but this wouldnt be used for storage or installing large game files so i thought an SSD of poss 240gb – 320gb? would this be a good plan do you think? any suggestions welcome

      cheers guys

We finally got in by testing other passwords. I reset back to an earlier date but the only one available was a year ago. It then offered to update to Windows 10 but during i saw the BSOD again. I quickly took a picture before it restarted and it said DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

        Possibly the HDD?

They aren’t concerned with the data as she isn’t very old and has been using a laptop for a while so wasn’t too concerned. My sister simply wants it sorted if i can.

I just got into the bios but there isn’t an option i can see for a reset.

Cheers guys. As they’ve already done the workplace adjustment and put the second screen in I’ll have to work with it now but i really appreciate the suggestions

                Hi guys.

Firstly my company only updated from win xp to 7 last year.

They’ve also locked out the actually graphics card settings and even the right click menu!

You could try making the smaller screen the primary and cloning that then seeing if your monitor will upscale it. It will still be 1280 x 1024 so the icons etc will be a bit big ?

Tried that Dave. You’re right, it works but it’s too big then on the new screen

                    <p style=”text-align: justify;”>

A clone is a clone i.e. they both have to be the same resolution. If you think about it it has to be.

                    </p>
Cheers Dave. Yeah, makes sense. I wasnt sure whether i was missing an option somewhere.

I can’t check Chrome as initially i thought it was just Chrome so uninstalled it ready to download again and start fresh. Now IE won’t let me download it again.

SCRATCH THAT – i just went in to get those errors. It started booting up and the PC went into a big update, took ages. When it restarted i went into IE and it let me download Chrome. Now Chrome seems fine as well!

                        Typical

                          Cheers.

The error comes up on those 3 different browsers, not just Chrome. They say something different to each other but all regarding the security.

It’s been switched off but plugged in for quite a while.

It’s not that old, has an i3-4130 for example.

I’ll check the bios maybe tomorrow. If it’s okay there, any other thoughts what could cause it?

sounds like i have started a good little project here.

so i cant remember if i mentioned the thermostat plug i ordered. it has now arrived and i have set it to only come on at about 20.5 degrees as the temp doesnt drop below that anyway for the most part and on the odd times it does such as through the night the rads arent on anyway so it would be just blowing cold air out. it works well as the rad makes sure it gets to about 21.5 degrees fairly easily without it and it just needs that little nudge to get to the desired 22 degrees and over due to the size of the room.

Forgot to say, please ignore the old lady carpet and wallpaper. We have been renovating from the top down and haven’t got to the living room yet ?

                                  hi guys

so i had already decided to build one myself after the diy one was posted earlier in the thread.  it cost a bit more than that £29 one but not much. i decided that by putting it at the bottom would keep it out of site and that part has worked out well. the only thing at present is that i need to put a piece of curved board at the base behind the rad so the air from the 4 USB pc fans goes up the wall instead of hitting the back.

i have currently rigged up a bit of board, curved over a set of ladders to create the bend i need and held with straps. i have then soaked in some watered down PVA glue into the board and set it to dry for a day. hopefully then the air will come up better.

i used two sets of twin fans with a speed controller which i have then daisy chained to each other then connected to a USB hub with mains adapter. i have now connected it through a thermo plug that switches on when the room gets to 19 degrees so the fans go off at night if we forget to turn them off manually.

                                    That diy one looks good.

Just wondering how i would wire a psu to it.  Do i strip off the connector? Do i also just pull off the fan connector as well?

Any particular psu that would do the job? I’ve never done that type of thing.

                                    Cheers guys

Yes it is the normal type of double rad and i i have bled them. I balanced them last night and they’re a bit better today but it’s like to try my own fan assembly.

Are pc fans rated for the temp they can withstand? I can only find info re the temps they aim to reduce whenever i Google that.

Yes there is the foil stuff i put behind the rads so not much lost there just the other way into the sofa.

The reviews on the radfan are mostly good but the lower rates reviews seen to suggest the fans are bodyn and can be ineffective due to being smaller.

Possible bigger fans would help both those issues but would again need to be powered and i would need a decent apparatus to hold them.

If if wanted it to auto upload any photos taken from either mine or the wife’s phone would that work? By using a synology app on each phone?

Also to access the photos from anywhere in the world as long as either of us had a data connection as we do when checking our Dropbox photos?

And for the above  would the ds115j be enough? The ds116 is tempting but a lot more expensive.

So the ds115j, ds116 and ds116 seem to be similar.

Obviously the 115 is much cheaper. I noted the usb 2 whereas the others have usb 3. I know I can find some other differences but any opinions on the differences?
