One of the best aids to a warm house was when we put reflective foil behind each radiator that was mounted on an outside wall. This made a huge difference to room temperatures with no increase in running costs.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to do this too. Did you get anything special?

It was just a version of THIS – all the DIY sheds had a version. It can be retro-fitted, almost as easily as beforehand.

Money again John . An MRI costs about 20 times that of an XRay ~ £1000/pop.

I think that might be the cost of a full body scan – prices vary, but seem to start from £200 – £250 per body region. Info from HERE . But I don’t doubt cost is a factor, as per my comment to Steve.

I personally think we should all get yearly mot’s, MRI and full bloods. Try and practice proactive medicine instead of reactionary medicine.

Hear, hear. I actually got invited for one now I’m 65, but haven’t got round to booking it up yet.

Even on a not so good MRI from 2010, I reckon they’d have noticed a missing disc.

About 7 years ago, the wife sat down in my computer chair without realising the back wasn’t locked out of recline and she suffered an unexpected short, sharp, rapid, recline. She could walk, albeit painfully, but she knew she’d done something bad, so we went to the GP, expecting a hospital referral. We got one and the hospital sent her for an x-ray.

This showed that she had arthritis on the base of her spine and in her hips. She was 56/57 at the time so that was hardly breaking news. They sent her off for some physio which eased, but didn’t resolve the hurt, and referred her to a local gym programme – “Fit for Life” – which she attended.

She carried this on for about 5 years and heard about a “Pain clinic” which she thought might help, as the arthritis couldn’t be cured, but it might have been managed better. She eventually got a referral, but needed an MRI before any decision was made. You can see where this is going, I’m sure.

The MRI came back and she was called in urgently. It turns out that when she fell back in my chair, a disc had come out, L5 I think, and was laying vertically instead of horizontally, against the sciatic nerve, apparently called a sequestrated disc. Whereas a fairly simple operation, or even manipulation, 7 years previously, would have re-inserted the disc between the vertebrae, it had now withered and nothing could be done short of a major operation. She is reluctant to undergo this until it has become a last resort.

The gym programme, along with swimming/water aerobics, plus sessions of mild yoga and pilates, as well as losing 4 stone, has made mobility easier. A by-product of that is the surgeon that was looking at the imminent probability of hip replacements has praised her efforts and said her regime has put off the necessity for immediate ops, and to come back to see him when she can’t cope any longer.

All because they couldn’t be bothered to do an MRI, and we didn’t know that problems that wouldn’t show up on x-ray, would on an MRI. I hear on so many occasions from different folk, including iirc on here, that an MRI showed what an x-ray had missed. We all should take this on board and insist on MRI’s, they do seem to be a more complete tool in the consultant’s box.

No, all good here. Only minor inconvenience was my bookmark tab. After reading the latest topics, I would click it as a form of refresh. It showed me as being signed out every time I hit it. I just deleted it and replaced it with the new one. :good:

Last time we had one done, about 5 years ago when we volunteered for Mencap as part of our training for working with adults with learning disabilities, we had one done. Then later on we needed another one done by Kent County Council when we qualified. They were about £80 a pop back then. Crazy. I mentioned this at the time and was told that even if a volunteer takes time out of over a year, they need another one done. As Ed says, bureaucracy gone mad!!

I’m fully scanned, and up to date, I’ve damaged 4 disks, from L2 upwards, L2 is about 5th of the size it should be, the other 3 are just misshapen. As its more than 2 disks, they won’t touch it :negative:

Seeing what Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick ( Supervet ) can do, and I’m not making comparisons in any way, before some wag interjects, it makes me wonder whether that decision is medical or financial.

He’s done some amazing work – on a Great Dane iirc – fusing two sets of vertebrae with rods and using “nylon nuts” sideways on as replacement discs. It’s a year or so since I saw it, so I’m rusty on the detail.

JAs for the Satnav John, I bought a Garmin Muvi almost 3 years ago and paid for ‘Free Upgrades Forever’. I was a bit cynical about that ‘Forever’ bit, but so far I must have had at least 5 upgrades to all Western Europe Maps. I downloaded and installed Garmin Express to this desktop and they give me an Alert whenever there are Upgrades. I plug the Garmin into the PC and it upgrades and updates it. Sometimes there are Freebies, and/or Offers. It cost me a bit at first purchase, but not anywhere close to £350, and no DVD involved, it’s a direct online download.

BS – I already had a TomTom, which I used in the Vito van – when we bought it new, I couldn’t persuade SWMBO a built-in system was worth it!! – and I got 2 years worth of updates with that. When I got the car, it had one built-in, ( so I passed the TomTom on to her ) it’s that built-in one that costs so much to update. It quite regularly shows me driving through fields, as we have had a good few road schemes finished recently.

My neighbour back in the late 90’s/early 00’s was a Snap-On dealer. He reckoned he had his Summer Holiday each year on the back of the sales of Diagnostics Machines and the cartridges required for each time a new or updated model was introduced.

What annoys me is the amount you get charged if you want to update your inbuilt Sat-Nav. It’s one DVD and about an hour’s labour and they want about £350 for that. No wonder there’s a market for the DVD’s on EBay!!

“I suspect that fears of over-regulated Health & Safety laws and litigation are the root causes.”

That, and the fact that more drivers then need to go to main dealers, or very well equipped independents, and the possibility to sell them equipment, or electronic mapping/analysing and the like, as a bonus profit.

I’m on the edge of London (just inside M25) – getting around is ultra bad at the minute, on my line – the main line in to London Liverpool Street and Stratford (Westfield shopping centre, West Ham Stadium) – no service for 8 consecutive weekends – related to crossrail I think. They are alos half way through 19 months (!!!) of roadworks on the A127 to replace a bridge over the railway to cater for taller crossrail trains. They also regularly take out the tube (district line) at the same time as the overground). Sometimes they even take out the C2C Fenchurch Street line as well. It is absolute carnage on my side of London. I hope crossrail is worth the aggro – it in theory should be a big help (already driving house prices up all along the route from Shenfield in Essex through London and on to Reading in Berkshire. For now though yes it is very very grim. We still have it better than than those poor sods that depend on Southern Rail trains though.

At the moment it seems road works are a problem too. TfL are running adverts on the radio advising you to “Check the road/route”, if you want to reach your destination in a timely fashion!! It would seem that in order to work 9 – 5 in London, if your going by car, your commute is likely to be 5 – 9!! :negative: :yahoo:

I also remember, back in the 90’s there were bridge repairs just off the Harrow Road, that took 3 years, or something ridiculous. Virgin had an office by the side of the bridge, and on their building they put a huge advertising board stating something like “How long does it take to repair a !$!*!%$%!$ bridge”.

I seen the mentioned plugs, but them racks are heavy, I personally wouldn’t trust my £x hundred pounds kit to plaster board fixings.

There was mention of a “Z” bracket at the back on one of the articles about the table, I’d have used them in conjunction with that. The ironing board wasn’t as expensive or delicate.:D

I had a cupboard door that was hollow like those legs, and when I needed to mount two coat hooks on the inside, so I could “park” the ironing board out of the way, I used plasterboard fixings like THESE. If the door is a bit thinner than normal, drill the hole with the fixing, then cut the “drill-bit” part off before screwing it into the door!!

Nothing yet in Essex/East London but forecast says we will cop some later but not as bad as they were forecasting. Apparently downgraded from “Storm Doris”, and affecting South West and Wales the worst.

Same south of the Thames Estuary. We were due some strong winds early evening on through till after midnight, with rain to accompany. Now we’re due a bit of drizzle around midnight, and winds around 20 mph instead of 45+mph.
