John, that looks to be far too big for your case, Dave said in your ‘Calling ricedg’ post:-

It must be half height (aka low profile) as your case won’t take full height ones. So you must make sure it does have the right brackets in the box.

Asus GeForce GT 710 2GB GDDR5 £50 Only get this if you can’t afford anything else.

Gigabyte GT 1030 Low Profile D4 2GB £80 All the current GT 1030 cards have only digital output i.e. no VGA. So if you have a VGA only monitor you’ll need an adapter like this for £8.

Looking at this and the M2 SSD topic, I had a thought – do we have the makings of a new Dave Special???!!!

I’ve been watching it because I’ve been thinking about upgrading for a while now, I’ve had my current PC – Zoostorm i5 6400 480 (was 240 ) SSD 8Gb – for 5 years now and it’s been a dream. The SSD has made loading W10 and programmes speedy and web pages lightning fast, only let down by my propensity to have multiple browser pages to hand, all with multiple tabs open. This has led to pages opening and the graphics playing catchup as you scroll through. Obviously overburdening the onboard graphics.

I’ve decided to give myself a 70th birthday present and may well go down this route. I was impressed with the SSD’s role in improving performance and I think the M2 will be an extra improvement on that, from all I’ve read.

As I’m not a gamer I’ve always coped with onboard graphics, but everything else has improved so much now that I think I need a graphics card to keep up with the speed of processor and drive. My last graphics card came with a Pentium III 500 from Mesh – yes, it was that long ago. I’ve been dismantling a couple of 1st gen i7’s that my son no longer uses and thought to utilise a card from one of them, to solve my page graphics problem, but neither is supported by W10 without a lot of messing around!

        – come on Dave, time to give it a name!!😄😁😉

Relax………….. you’re not ill, you’re not going mad, life has just changed.

Think back to all the conversations that you’ve had with people over the years and you’ve said to them “Yeah, that sounds great, but I just don’t have the time.”

You really need something to keep your mind busy, structure your time and be fun. Depending on the sort of person you are that could range from visiting all the family that you never had time to ( Covid situation permitting ) to taking up golf, getting a dog, joining a club or group, or even volunteering – that could be at  an animal Rescue Centre or a Charity or ferrying the elderly to Doctors appointments or hospitals – unless you’re fed up with driving now??

It’s basic time management, because if let yourself get bored or lonely ( Dragon permitting ) you’ll be no good to yourself or anyone. If you’re into things like architecture or gardening or history there are days out now the countryside is re-opening.

Do more things for and with your wife as that will take some adjustments too. I was fortunate in that when I ‘retired’ from BT in ’93 ( voluntary Redundancy ) I then spent 15 years working together, so we already had been 24/7, and despite loving her to bits, that took quite an adjustment!! When we actually stopped working, it wasn’t such a huge change.

Depending on how you both feel, you could still work, if that is what you’re missing, we did Home Dog Boarding, but that was more a necessity to see us through to our Pensions. Also check with her to see what suits her, is she happy to have you around, or are you just getting under her feet. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but it’s real!!

Best of luck and welcome to the new life you should be looking forward to, you’ve earned it.

Edit – just remembered the best piece of advice someone gave me, which was to get yourself a decent, top of the range 10 year car, because now you’ve stopped earning, finance will be more difficult as you get older.

Hi Les, well, you’ve certainly been busy!!! Happy 80th birthday, by the way!! That nearly snuck in un-noticed.

              Well, that sucks!!!

Could you not go down the route of buying it on a Credit Card up front, then transfer the balance to a 12 month zero interest account and re-pay the balance when the MoD pay you??

I’ve seen individuals who have built houses use that method to keep the build going till a second mortgage instalment came in.

Whichever way you go, good luck.

Sounding good, Dave. Good luck with the clearance – as you say, they go deep, but you’ve been there before.

On a practical level, how is your ankle going to cope up poles/ladders, or is your previous associate coming along with you?? Too much exercise or even too long standing around these days gives my legs grief – but you are still younger than me!! 😀 Good to see you back here, I can see you’ve been busy for a while though.😀

A smashing guy – one that you would have liked to have known in person. He would have lit up a group/room in person the same way he enthralled with his stories on here.

He was – and should be – proud of his achievements and his family. They will miss him terribly.

Thanks all. It all went surprisingly smooth. I think I have been here two weeks now. No problems so far, plenty to explore. There was the first week of “flat-pack hell” as I like to call it. Anyway, once I gather my thoughts I’ll update you all.

That’s good to hear, Lee. The wife loves walking along the front here, at Minnis Bay, it’s really calming and life’s problems just seem to fade away. You should give it a try.

She has said that when her time comes, she wants to be cremated and sprinkled over the sea there, along with a bench with a plaque for all those who want to come visit!!!

                      Road users?

Other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians – I sometimes wonder just how good their eyesight is after some of the stunts they’ve pulled. London drivers ( and most big towns really ) especially seemed to have tunnel vision, – it only mattered what was directly in front of them!!

not sure about monthly charges, I never knew you had to pay a sub on some.

Hi John, I wasn’t meaning for SatNavs, I meant the subscription to Which?. 👍 As for how the blind manage? – I rather hope they wouldn’t be driving…….., but with some road users I’ve come across, I’m just not so sure!!!!🤔🤣

Not heard of Carvass before, but there are some new ones on ebay.

They seem to be aimed at lorries and trucks, so maybe that’s why they have good audio instructions.

Either that or Which? have some good articles on SatNavs HERE. They have a ‘half price first month for £5’ offer on, but just remember to cancel before the next month as they automatically renew at full price.

I put it down to weather conditions, considering it was a couple of days after the big thunderstorms hit us week before last.

Glad to hear you’ve got it sorted, Lee. Hope you’ve found somewhere to the South of Whitby, cos going North only gets you closer to Geordieland!! You’ll certainly notice the difference in the air after Bradford.

Your main challenge will be getting the cats to call it home, but iirc they’re more inside cats than outside, ie where all the comforts and food lie!!

It’s a lot fresher this morning and the pressure has dropped a little. We had a couple of power cuts around 2am this morning, but all back on not long after that.

It’s nesting time at the moment here for the seagulls so they’re always on full alert, letting the others know when there’s movement – they used to set off when I let a dog out into the garden for a late night pee.

Interesting – it has gone from a $59000 high, two weeks ago to a $33000 low two days ago, but it’s back at just under $38000 now. That’s some volatility.
