Hi Doc – I’m on a W10 64bit desktop + Chrome  and each of the above terms, mtb, MTB, Mines  and Election do produce pukka Search results in a drop box below the green bar. As soon as the letters are typed into the bar, a revolving arrow starts and the the dialogue drop box opens below the green bar without even clicking the magnifying glass or hitting enter.

      Possibly something at your end??

Edit – including the punctuation marks around mtb – “mtb” locates just your post above.

Well, I looked up my old router and it’s not on the DD-WRT capable list, but no matter. There are easier routes to go down.

I wasn’t looking to make it seamless, just improve the signal strength in the 2 rooms. My first thoughts were to use something that I had, or could adapt, but that seems to be a bit of a kludge.

I’ve done a walk around the house with Wi-Fi Analyzer on my phone and in the spare room doorway, the signal is -70dBm, by the socket it’s -75, by the bed it’s -85/90. On the back of what Dave said, I’m thinking about one of THESE – with those numbers would that do the job?

I’m looking at Dave’s comment – “Many people place it in the weak area as they think it amplifies the signal, it doesn’t. It halves the signal coming out so must have a good signal coming in.”

I don’t have any spare sockets in the hallway ( middle ground @ -60 ) but there is one in a cupboard, ( -70 ) this end of the hallway, but that puts an extra wall in-between both rooms.

It would seem Dave’s suggestion of homeplug WiFi like THIS is the solution. Now to get the wife on board, – it would be so much easier if our son asked for it as that was the magic potion to the wife’s heart and purse!!

Anybody have any thoughts on using the wall wart to charge the car battery in the garage??

He is saying maybe some forumite may be able to donate there old Desktop kit, if it’s got more grunt than the server your currently using.

That was exactly where I was coming from.

Sorry I didn’t see your reply Lee – dinner and 4 episodes of “Chicago Fire” Catchup.

What’s it running on Lee? – people could be discarding something that’s no good for their PC requirements but that would suit the Forum’s server needs better than the current set-up??

I just know that will never get plugged back in after the SatNav or whatever else. I’m trying to pre-empt the inevitable here, I know it’ll happen again, so just looking for an easier jump start solution, just wanting to make certain it’s a safe one.

Regarding 2, I’ll give that a try. I know I’ve got a couple of spare routers around here. I didn’t think 2 routers were good on one BB line, but that set-up seems to work. Cheers Boris.

I was speaking to my sister recently and where she has suffered over the years with her knees and neck she has accustomed herself to do things differently – or not at all. This has recently spread to her wrists. Where this has impacted her life dramatically, she started to research the problem and I quote from her email to me about it below.

“BORON, ARTHRITIS AND ME…    In June last year, 2016, I was on the waiting list for wrist surgery. I had severe arthritis and had completely ‘lost my grip’. I couldn’t pick anything up with my right hand. Thumb could not meet fingers. I dropped cups and kettles; I couldn’t take notes or cards out of my wallet; driving was becoming a challenge and typing was out of the question. I was in severe pain, night and day. My signature looked like a monkey scrawl. As I had to learn to do more with my left hand, the left wrist also began to trouble me.

A friend told me about Rex Newman’s work on boron and arthritis. I did my research on the internet. I was willing to give it a go. Newman was a soil scientist who had noted that the levels of boron in the soil differed around the world. Where there were higher levels of boron in the soil, fewer people suffered from arthritis.

                        Country                                                        Boron Consumption                       Arthritis levels

                        ·         Jamaica                                                less than I mg per day                    70% of the population

                        ·         USA, UK, Australia, NZ, S.Africa     1 to 2 mg per day                          20% of the population

                        ·         Israel                                                     10 mg per day                                   less than 1% of population

I also discovered that many of the spas with a reputation for helping arthritis have high levels of boron in the water. The theory is that boron is crucial in metabolising calcium and integrating it into the bone and the cartilage. Since boron occurs naturally and a high intake does no harm to those who live in high boron areas, it would follow that it would be perfectly safe to up my intake and see what happened.

I started off in July with a week of one x 3mg tablet a day. I chose Solgar Boron (100 caps – £7.79) from local health food shops. The second week I took two x 3mg tablets a day, one with breakfast and one with my evening meal. Almost immediately I noticed a lessening of the pain and stiffness.

In the third week I added in a third tablet. The literature says that some people (not all) may experience a healing crisis at this point, where symptoms actually get worse. I certainly experienced this. I had aches where I had not had any aches before! (Elbows and ankles and particularly my big toes!) For about 7 -10 days my feet were a little tender when I was walking. I can imagine that this is where some people would give up, but I was determined to see it through.

I continued to take the three x 3mg tablets each day. The healing crisis quickly faded and it was a real breakthrough moment. The aches faded from the ‘new’ places (elbows, ankles, feet) and the severe pain went (and has stayed gone) from the seriously arthritic knees and wrists and neck.

I’d read that those under 55 generally get better in the first month; those under 65 need two months and those older than 65 need three months  of 9 mg per day. Then they can all revert to a maintenance dose of one x 3mg per day. (Also says that it’s good for heart probs /osteoporosis /menopause symptoms & lots more, but I can only speak for the arthritis).

Well, it certainly worked for me. I’ve had a few months now on the maintenance dose. I’ve taken myself off the surgery waiting list. After finishing the course I have very good flexibility of my right hand and wrist. I can touch my thumb to each of my fingers, pick up anything, write, type and drive without any problem. General flexibility has improved and I’m doing more exercise. Cost : just under eight pounds per month for 1-3 months and then about £3 per month on maintenance dose.

Please feel free to pass this on to any of your friends, family or colleagues who suffer with arthritis.”

I just thought I’d throw it out there for information purposes.

@admin – Hi Lee, I just took a trawl through ohbother after getting some notifications ( that were old ones ) and on clicking the numbered box by the side of “Hi, JayCeeDee” I open the Notifications page in Forumite proper. Probably just a crossed link.

The front page is blank as well as opposed to the basement stairs.

We had an endowment back in ’82. We bought out first maisonette in Barnet for £27k, taking out a 35 year endowment to re-pay it. I cashed it in ( 9 years early ) 9 years ago when we moved here. I got around £15k for it. When we moved from there to Potters Bar in ’87 we took out a bridging loan. Everything was in place, but the dates overlapped by about a week. They were desperate to move, but we’d got a very good price on the house so it figured in alright. The mortgage came in a week later and everything went back to normal.

To this day we reckon there was a scam by the estate agents going on. We hadn’t sold our place when we went to look, but knew where and what we wanted. The vendors had already lowered the price twice and the husband, a teacher, had moved north to a new job. The wife and kids had stayed down here till the house sold. They were bridging and were giving the ( sole ) estate agents grief about no viewings. We went into the EA telling them we had approval on a mortgage but hadn’t sold yet. We think we were sent to mollify the vendors without putting anything at risk. The house was perfect for what we needed. The wife had just taken over the business and we needed a third bedroom for an au pair to look after our son while we were at work. We offered at the asking price – about £10k  under true value – on the viewing, on condition they took it off the market, were accepted  and we shook on the deal. The next day when the wife phoned the estate agent to ask for the vendor’s phone number they balked at giving it to her and said the house had to stay on the market. She got the number off them and phoned her up about to tear her off a strip – not a nice experience, I can tell you:) – when the vendor re-iterated her willingness to keep to the deal and went on to rip the EA a new one. From that point on almost all our dealings were with the vendor direct.

Our thoughts are that the EA had someone in the wings with an even lower offer, waiting till they were truly desperate, then they would joint purchase it and re-sell it at a big profit.

The value of that house went up by £35k within a few years, just before the crash in the early 90’s. That one thing, buying it at a good price, kept us out of negative equity.

Why even have voice responses, some ‘remote controls’ are pretty dire after a few feet’s distance on a good day, I can imagine that voice over 20 foot or so would be a nightmare.

Quote taken from my link above – my second post – :-

“This warning applies only to Samsung TVs that have always-on listening features. These sets usually have a microphone built into the remote, allowing you to issue commands to the TV after speaking a particular phrase that wakes up the system or by hitting a button. ”

At my computer desk, if I’ve got the TV going in the background, either waiting for a programme to start  or keeping an eye on the news, I can control the TV or the Sky box from about 15 feet. Newer remotes are a generation apart from those from a few years ago.

After a quick Google to confirm my initial thoughts, it only involves Samsung and possibly LG TV’s too, as far as eavesdropping is concerned.

“Dumb” and even Smart TV’s are only going to be overheard if voice control is either activated, or added on as an aftermarket addition.  link
