John – if THIS is your BIOS, you can boot from an attached drive, as long as it’s connected before booting. I would imagine that could be a thumb drive or a DVD drive, ( or maybe even an external hard disk).

From link above – “Note: That “USB drive” doesn’t appear as an option in the list, even though our computer has USB ports. If we connected a USB device to the computer before starting our computer and accessing this screen, we’d see the USB drive option in the list. Some computers display the USB drive option even when a drive isn’t connected, while some don’t.”

Edit – that’s a strange BIOS on my link – it’s dated 2008, – for W7, 8 or 10, – yet it shows Diskette ( floppy ) and primary and secondary/ master and slave ( IDE?? ) both of which were out of date by then. That’s taking Legacy to the extreme??:-)

I was still writing when you posted.

John – you could always get a cheap external DVD drive. They’re under £20 these days. The amount they’re used mostly it’s taking up a useful SATA port.  That would give you the best chance for two drives, SSD and Spinner. ?

Edit – is that 10 full backups, or some of them differential??

I’ve just looked at the MANUAL for your E50-00, – is your hard drive mounted sideways on like on page 29?? If so, it looks like there is enough space on the floor of the case, or sideways on, on that small half panel, above the hard drive. You can mount it with Blu-Tack or double sided sticky pads.

You’ll need to check you have a spare SATA port on your motherboard, depending on what you are using currently. Good luck.

They are plug-in SSD’s that go into a socket on modern motherboards. They fit into a smaller version of a memory socket. If you’re still on Socket 775 motherboards, you’ll likely not come across a mobo with one of those on it for another 10 years.

To fit the SSD into your case, you’ll need to get a cradle that has fixings for a 2.5″ SSD;  most SSD’s are this size; that itself fits into a 3.5″ drive bay in your case. Like THIS.

If you’re only going to put the OS and a few other programmes that you use a lot, such as Browsers – and that’s really all you need to put on there unless you game at more than just casual level, – 120 is all you need, so Dave’s recommend in the posts on Page 1 of this topic, 120GB for £60 ish should do you nicely.

Not sure what you mean reset option in 10.

In W10, if you click on the Settings Cog, then click on Update and Security, you’ll see a option to “Reset this PC”. You can choose to keep all your files, or remove them. It’s a bit like a Rebuild my OS option, or wipe it all and load the OS from scratch, either self-repair or nuke and start again.

Hmm… A difficult one. How many ex MM people are on here? Assuming (as Lee asked) we all used the same or similar names then I can only see around twenty people who visited in the last day. I would get a feel for any takers before putting up a paywall. As Jason says, not many would want to climb it.

If you click on Activity then on the Member Tab, as you scroll down, there are a lot of people on there that I recognise, ( and some I recognise from their @ name, rather than their Login name ), but you’ll find a hardcore of regulars. The others seem to drop in and out on an irregular basis – just like back on MM really.

I heard her piece and totally understand why that one came over the way that it did, ( adrenaline can be a life-saver, but the immediate after-effects can be a b*tch ). I was referring more to “set pieces to camera” from the barriers.

It seemed that where we could see what was going on behind the journalist doing his piece, eg the column of members of the public coming down the road with their hands on their heads, took it on board, and then had the journalist finally interrupt his spiel and then spend several minutes breathlessly explaining that members of the public were coming down the road with their hands on their heads. You would have expected the cameraman to update the journalist as he saw something going on. Maybe I expect better quality. It just seems the B team were out last night – and this was three hours after the start.

I watched this unfold from around 11.30 last night. It’s the sort of thing that you can’t prevent without having already got eyes on the doers. But damn, they were dealt with quickly and efficiently, despite ( or because ) wearing dummy bomb vests!!

After that, on the BBC News Channel, it was a case of having somebody recount what you were watching on the screen. It was almost like they had “Agency” reporters, who suddenly found they had to talk a lot. Maybe I found this a little irritating because I grew up with the the likes of John Snow, Trevor McDonald, Michael Nicholson etc.

I realise alcohol was a huge factor, but the reaction and the language, picked up by Mobile phone footage in the bars and clubs, to the Police trying to make people safe was astounding. Again, the BBC was a little lacking in running their 10 second filter delay, as you could hear drunk voices calling the Police “C**ts”. Unbelievable.

Well, maybe the long fix did something, because now I can change the drive letter ( pretty sure it was greyed out before ), did so, now open and explore are back, FE page opens and it’s just completed the set with a 2nd differential backup. One Happy Bunny. 🙂

Thanks all for the input. Not sure it’s going to save me any money in the long run, is this an early sign of future problems, or is that 1TB drive just teasing me!!!??   🙂

Well, it’s passing all the tests on the Seagate Utilities. Short Drive Self Test, Fix drive short test, and it’s on the Fix drive long test now. After that I’ll try to update the firmware and then check again.

Thanks for advice so far. If all else fails, the 1TB new version is £49.99, that’s £6 more than the 500GB. A no-brainer, but still unexpected spending.

I’m on Sky Box Sets, but balked at what they wanted for Sky Movies. It is so much better presented on Sky, but if you can ignore the pauses, spinning balls, etc NowTV is acceptable.

Like you I find the “seamless” element of SkyQ, ie move around the house from room to room and pick up where you left off, almost totally irrelevant. Plus you’re only on 2 lan ports on the Q Box instead of 4 on the router.

I’m fairly sure part of the training is to ignore all other animals. It doesn’t bear thinking about if a working guide dog thought it would be a good idea to chase a cat.?
