My other bit of research was looking into what would improve problematic performance of multiple browser pages with multiple tabs open, all at the same time. The main factor affecting performance was either RAM or CPU/Cores and the answers come roughly split between both camps, so I’ve got a Mobo with 4 x RAM slots so I can boost it at a later date and went overkill on the CPU!!

Just checked the second PSU ( mentioned in post above ) and it’s a CoolerMaster 500 ( non-modular ) of 2013 vintage so that’s on it’s way out!!

Well, I’ve been researching and so far my collection of bits is coming in at around about £600 for new everything, except monitors, so I’m going to hold on until Black Friday and see if that brings it closer to my £500 limit.

I’m showing Amazon links but I’m also pricing it through CCL and Ebuyer giving me similar prices, but missing a couple of items due to spotty stock levels of CPU and Mobo. Not after RGB at all.

        Case

        PSU

        Mobo

        CPU

        Ram

        M.2 SSD

        GPU

Some bits are overkill, but what the heck!! I’ll use a spare SSD for storage on the PC and some old HDD’s for backup.

I’ve got some old PSU’s but I’m leary about using them, they were working prior to removal, but I wouldn’t want to risk one blowing and taking what will be a new PC with it!! Am I being over cautious?? I remember these scenarios from MM days – is that still the case or have they improved a lot in the last 7 years. One is an OCZ modular 700 and the other is ( modular? ), branded,  but I can’t recall which.

Unfortunately, some humans don’t need a reason for hate, intolerance and violence.

My son is gay and was up in Manchester a couple of weeks ago with his partner, having coffee outside a Costa which was in a park. A couple of young ( 17 ish ) coloured lads came over and started mouthing off at them and giving them grief. They ignored them to start off with but they continued. My son got up to leave and one of them got in his face again and made a grab for a £200 pair of sunglasses. At that point my son stopped taking it and grappled the mouthy one to a park bench and told him to stay put. That should have been enough discouragement for them, but unfortunately they were not alone, there was another half dozen of them, one waving a blade, and he got worked over, but never went down. His partner and other bystanders kept telling  them they had called the police and eventually they left. Police came after about half an hour and took statements from all.

After my initial anger at hearing about this, my words to my son were,  60 years ago it would have been a white gang beating up their Grandfathers, that was wrong then, it’s wrong now, so why do young coloured youths now feel that they have the moral high ground to attack and beat up another innocent minority.

My mind boggles at human nature, are the lessons of the past always forgotten and doomed to be re-enacted??

I remember at the time of the ‘birth’ of the small utility companies, brought about to introduce competition to the Big 6, everyone was spouting about it being the same molecules of gas and the same electrons of electricity, the infrastructure was the same, it was all about who you paid to manage your account and you could choose your supplier based on cost and service provided.

Based on that, you should not be cut off, but if they stop collecting your DD remember to put it safely aside somewhere for when someone comes to collect.

The big mistake made by the UK was to not follow on from our pioneering work in the Nuclear Generation field. We suffered from ‘Cold War’ worries about  nuclear and shut off development when we should have been modernising, making safer and consolidating the lead we had. Maybe if the Green movement had been as vocal then about the whole coal/gas fired generation of power as they are now, and less about Nasty Nuclear we may have been in a better situation.

I’ve got one of THESE if it will help. It’s only 4GB but it’ll help it along. Came out of my old rig 5 years ago. Been sitting in a drawer ever since.

No money needed, I can just post it anytime.

A quick Google HERE indicates that GPT is more suited for modern ( post 2010 ) UEFI systems – MBR is older and can be limited for larger drives ( 2TB and over ). It’s an interesting read, but just use the recommendations, don’t get bogged down with some of the technical details!!

Hopefully that missing “…not ” was a typo?? or tongue in cheek!!??

Our whole political infrastructure is screwed. It hasn’t really worked since it truly was a two-party system with a third party providing the balance. Many could argue that the Lib-Lab pact showed that as faulty and wouldn’t be completely wrong. But the premise remains. There are currently far too many divergent parties now that continue to hold sway with their permitting or withholding support. Why did we need to pump £Billions into Northern Ireland instead of into a Care System, just to keep a no-confidence vote from succeeding, and that’s just a recent example.

Why do Labour Policies have to be Worker/Benefit oriented instead of what is best for Britain?

Why do Conservative Policies have to be Business/Low Tax oriented instead of what is best for Britain?

They are all so far up their own a*ses that they have forgotten what it is to serve without self interest.

The current Care proposals sound good as sound bites, but the minute you drill down into them it shows them to be full of holes. The cap will only apply to care and not accommodation or food costs?? What is that about??

When will the government recognise that there is a huge amount of money to be made from Caring for our elderly, our less able younger people and similar. Vast amounts of profit is being taken out of the private care system by the owners of the homes, some small individuals as well as some large companies.

A news item earlier this week told of an adult with learning disabilities was ‘earning’ a Care Home £26000 per month!!! That will come from Central Government to Local Government to the care home. That’s what a fully trained nurse earns in a year!!

Fully qualified nurses start on salaries of £24,907 rising to £30,615 on Band 5 of the NHS Agenda for Change pay rates.

I’m not going to cry ‘Nationalise the Care Industry’ for obvious reasons, but how can we allow it to continue as it is??

                            Another VM moment!!

Just as I was singing Nicola Sturgeon’s praise ( a very rare occurrence, believe you me!! ) regarding the upcoming vaccine passport requirements and extra mask regulations Scotland are bringing in, Sajid Javid  ditches the existing plans for England that matched!! It beggars belief!!

Anything that inconveniences the younger generation into becoming as sensible as the older generation about the opening up of larger public interactions, by that I mean public transport, pubs, clubs and sporting venues, can only be good. Unless you’re double vaccinated and masked you can’t come in! Yes, there will always be a minority that will wriggle and find a way round it ( as per false id’s ) but with the majority following sensible rules and taking sensible precautions, we will find ourselves getting closer and closer to the goal of getting Covid under control and the population 100% double vacc’d ( only where it is healthy for them to be vacc’d ).

I’ve been waiting for the booster that has been talked about, but apparently now, we won’t be getting the booster in one arm and the flu jab in the other as was anticipated. Some lingering doubts about interactions before approval is given. Well I for one would sign a waiver. Now people will be doubling their usage of precious NHS resources for a flu jab one day and the Covid booster another time.

I feel a Victor Meldrew moment coming on!!

If you accept a credit on your Amazon account the refund process is a lot faster.

That’s been the case for me a few times recently. Their refund sometimes beats the retailers notifications.

I have however noticed a worrying trend,  sales through Amazon are sometimes handled by box slingers such as Yodel or Hermes.

I returned an Amazon purchase using one of their Parcel Shops ( one of the old Martin McColl chain recently refurbished and rebranded ) and they are geared to print the return label etc and track the parcel, – they used Hermes. All went OK.

We were at a funeral for the wife’s uncle at the beginning of last month and she bought a lot of clothing online from Amazon, John Lewis, Roman Originals and Wallis. When she decided on her outfit I did a whole bundle of returns. John Lewis were superb – returned at a local Waitrose. This was no more than I expected, but good to see they’ve kept their reputation. Amazon – as above – were great, Roman were very good but Wallis ( now taken over along with Burton and a couple of others by BooHoo online only) are dire and their new name describes how they have left me feeling!! One item only refunded at the end of this week after three email chases, and one still outstanding after the same three email chases.

I’ve got another one of my son’s old PC’s to dispose of, I need to check what it consists of, but it’s in an old tower case, lots of Gigabyte stuff, probably W7. The last one I did was an old 1st gen i7.

Don’t need anything for it, just postage.

I’ll connect it up to our spare TV and find out what’s in it. How soon do you need it??

Edit – it won’t have any HDD’s in it.

That looks like the Low Profile version of this one I’m looking at for my build.

Just make sure that your monitor has an HDMI port ( or Display Port ). If it only has a VGA port you may need the adapter Dave also referenced.

The MSI B560M board that I’ve been looking at has something called “M.2 Shield FROZR” which it says provides “Cooling your NVMe SSD delays throttling which results in higher overall performance. Part of the motherboards heatsink design which helps avoid SSD throttling by offering the best thermal protection.”

It seems that NVMe performance comes with a side dish of heat, but at least they are dealing with it.
