I wish we could use WiFi calling at home: our village has absolutely carp mobile coverage. I looked up what I could do about this, but it’s not possible because (a) I didn’t buy the phone direct from EE and (b) it’s a Wileyfox, SIM free. As I write this, at 00:40, I have the magic EE symbol on the phone. By tomorrow morning, that will be gone, until after approx. 10 pm. There is no point switching operators: no one has coverage here.
Bob – is one of THESE any use to you?? I’ve moved off EE now onto SKY. It worked well for me for a year or so before I swapped. I wouldn’t have thought you would have problems with getting it activated as they sell them on Ebay/Gumtree etc. If you think it’ll help, let me know.
Just like a little Brummy mate in BAOR, Barry Evans…………….. His missus was from the East Belfast back streets and their arguments were legendary.
If unintelligible!!!
I Googled ” which wavebands for TalkSport ” and got THIS page.
Going down the pan – definitely!!
It’s in the Politics section – have you ever had an honest reply from a politician or have they prevaricated and changed the subject????????
On a slight aside, but relevant – I was watching Guy Martin vs the Robot Car on C4 last week and they were telling you about early AI and one of Turing’s colleague’s supposedly started AI with an electronic tortoise that had a photocell and followed a torch shone at/in front of it.
The next real advance in automotive AI was at the TRRL – they had a 1971 MKII Cortina that drove around the circuit without a driver just following a white line and stopping when it reached a box. Apparently funding was withdrawn because it cost too much!! What would a 30 year head start on autonomous cars have been worth to the UK??
The programme is well worth a watch on CatchUp.
Just got an email today from Barclays – they’re basically saying they’re not going to put their support behind it from this point on, but if you’re using it keep it going.
See extract from the email below:-
Dear …… ,
We wanted to let you know about some information relating to Kaspersky anti-virus software following the information that’s been shared in the news today. We felt it was important to share with you the decisions we’ve made, as well as some key facts.
What you need to know
The UK Government has been advised by the National Cyber Security Centre to remove any Russian products from all highly sensitive systems classified as secret or above.
We’ve made the precautionary decision to no longer offer Kaspersky software to new users, however there’s nothing to suggest that customers need to stop using Kaspersky.
What should you do next?
At this stage there is no action for you to take. It’s important that you continue to protect yourself with anti-virus software. If you have any concerns, you could consider alternative anti-virus suppliers.

Unless there’s contradictory advice I’ll keep using it.
My remedy for nasal blockages, whether they be cold/flu related or not, is a hankie on my bedside table with 8 – 10 drops of Eucalyptus Oil and 6 -8 drops of Lavender Oil. I always get a good night’s sleep ( courtesy of the Lavender ) and wake up with a clear nose in the morning.
Yesterday we picked the wife’s weekly prescription up from the docs, and there was a generic leaflet in it warning of overuse of antibiotics, informing the reader that you shouldn’t go the docs for any old sniffle. My first thought was, tell the doctors to stop handing them out, not the recipient that will follow the docs orders. They must of been putting in all prescription bags, as my wife can’t have them no more as she had Cdiff last year twice. Strange leaflet indeed.
On TV at the moment there is an ad campaign to stop people thinking anti-biotics are a universal panacea for everything. The problem is our bodies adapt to them and they become less effective ( or next to useless ) over time. They should be used sparingly for specific urgent medical treatment, not just handed out ad-lib to get the patient out of the surgery in double quick time. But you’re right, it’s only when the GP’s get the message that any changes will come about.
I’m not advocating against them btw, just their unnecessary over-use.
She has my sympathies – since coming back from holiday on the 18th last month I’ve had a week of flu, a week recovering while the wife had it – and she ended up on anti-biotics for a chest infection – another 10 days of cold/flu and still now I’m left with a persistent silly cough. I didn’t think it would be a chest infection and this was confirmed by the Marsden’s CT scan ( 6-monthly check-up which was all good and showed the lungs clear ).
They were baffled and could only suggest that as I been on a cruise, it could very, very possibly – but really unlikely – be Legionnaire’s Disease. As they had a urine sample for some of their usual tests they would include one for that too. They really are great!! They said if it persists for another week or so to get down the GP’s. Deep joy!!
You’re right – they think receiving sympathy is a sign of their weakness, not your caring!! We can only turn up and do what’s needed!!
@bullstuff2 – Bob, wasn’t SWMBO due to have her hip ops Tuesday?? Hope she’s all OK.
It was only when the wife was referred to a pain clinic that she was MRI’d – it’s a requirement apparently – and they discovered that it was a sequestered disk laying on the sciatic nerve that was giving her all the grief of cramps, numbness, pain, leg giving way etc.
This had not been apparent from the x-ray that they did 5 years previously, from which they had diagnosed arthritis on the base of the spine and wear and tear. As she said at the time, you don’t stand out in all weathers for 40 years without getting some sort of problems.
Good luck with it PM and persevere!!
They were absolutely in the right place at the right time with the right product, with the chance to become the universal “go-to” product for portable file storage/management ( for that time ).
It just goes to show what can happen if you don’t get the quality right.
If it’s just the bracket that’s too big – ie the printed circuit board is low profile – check the USB3 manufacturer’s website to see if they sell a low profile bracket for the card. In fact, check the box it came in to see if one was supplied.
During my young commuter days, like some 80% of the population I was a smoker and had a minimal sense of smell. I did not realise at the time what a blessing that was on the Underground. Having given up smoking for over 40 years I now find the ‘honk’ from human body odours on the Tube overwhelming, but I still love the buzz of the city.
At its’ worst standing next to a stinky strap-hanger!!
What a wonderfully appropriate name for the firm that checked out the exploit!!!???? pentestpartners – one assumes they don’t just check out your Parker!!
Laugh???!!! – the tears rolled down my legs!!! Keep ’em coming Wasbit!!
I don’t think SWMBO enjoyed me dragging her out to Mablethorpe North End* last Sunday in the teeth of a howling North wind, though!
*The quietest part of the beaches. And the most exposed, up on the Sandhills. My OH was disgruntled.
And I bet her thoughts on the matter were audible – even over the wind!!!
Wonder what the Fat Controller made of that one!!
I was born a bit outside Central London ( Hornsey Rise – about half-way to Barnet ) and my whole working life was spent in Central London and I enjoyed the buzz of it – so did the wife. Having retired and moved out 9 years ago we hate going back in. The peace of the countryside/seaside is idyllic for us. ??
How can I edit Duke? Can’t see the button – sure I could before but even then thought it was only the post and not the title? Wan’t to uphold your strict standards!
Standard Edit button disappears from posts about 15 mins after initial posting. The Duke has Mod privileges, so can beautify our mis-steps at a later date.
Strict standards – that’s another factor entirely!!??
