The wife loves hers ( 52 plate ) with 32k on the clock now, came to us with 23k when we got it 5 years ago from a customer – first big bill was this year, £800 for two tyres, steering/suspension bushes, power steering pipe replacement ( £250 on it’s own ) and a few other minor odds and sods. I was going to px it, but the wife thought about it and said to get it done. She knows it’s history, calls it her “point and shoot” car.

iirc it’s about £180 to insure for her with me as named driver. Haven’t got insurance for a young’un in years – in those days we could still insure it as our own with other/named drivers and let our son use it.? It would have been 2k in his name!! Been out of touch with insurance costs for him, but at 34 now he’s looking for an A4 or a C class saloon in the near future because working for Jag/Land Rover he spends 3 days a week up in Coventry, but lives in East London.

Edit – she’ll probably notice the difference in the driving of the two cars – if the Pug has a bigger engine, but with more body weight – the Ka is lightweight, free revving with a good sized engine for the cars’size, but a lot more involved. If it had been the 1.0 or 1.1 she’d have had to work more with it.

The new battery for the 1.3 petrol Ka will be 50Ah – the one in the 2 litre diesel Merc is 100Ah. Looks like it’ll be for the Ka only!!

        Cheers guys.

Yes, that was a concern of mine.

I started looking at THESE reviews but they’re all double or treble the price, which makes it a serious purchase, as opposed to a bit of mad money. That looked the best of the sensibly priced ones – unless they lost their capability/usability at that price point.

I’ve been having problems with the wife’s Ka – battery low/failing to start after a fortnight’s rest. My old battery from the Merc didn’t hold enough charge to act as standby, so that has gone. New battery and a couple of tyres is in the pipeline, but does anybody have any experience with THESE .

The blurb that comes with them says they are fine to boost a flat battery and turn the engine over for several seconds, on 5 occasions. That should suffice as it normally starts on the button every time. They don’t seem big enough for what they promise, but they must do ( trade descriptions and the like ). Does anybody have any experience of them in use at all??

Well, that one came along wearing Stormtrooper boots!!

As I’m still on Anniversary Edition because of problems updating to Creators/Fall Creators, I’ve been putting off some of the updates as they fail. I only checked this morning that they were deferred for the next 5/6 days – in actual fact it was turned off. So how did this one just kick its’ way in and start……./restart/restart???!!

I’ve enjoyed some of the changes made by moving up to W10, but some of them do get right up my nose!!

…………………..cannot sit still for more than 5 minutes, has to be doing something. Cleaning, dusting, hoovering, washing, ironing, if all that fails she gets out the laptop, her huge jigsaws or puzzle books, or drags me out for a walk. She is also a born organiser and was telling the male nurse how to do his job. I just sat back and let the mayhem commence, I’m used to it. ???

Sometimes she scares the crap out of me… All is ready, family all informed, house clean, pots washed, dried and put away. Can’t see anything out of place. Wish me luck, I have the task now of trying to keep her in the routine they give her.

That sounds so like mine, they could be twins.?? If I’m looking for something that came last week, she tells me she’s either washed it, painted it, or thrown it away!!

One reason that she’s put off going under the knife for her back and her hips is the 3 month “take it easy” recovery time afterwards. One of her favourite sayings is ” There’ll be enough time to take it easy when I’m dead!!”

When she had her cataracts done, the three week “No housework, no bending down, no quick movements” rule was pergatory for her ( and me ) and went against every fibre of her being, so multiply that by four and one of us would end up dead, and I’ve a feeling that might be me!!

Her chosen path instead of the ops was to lose almost 4 stone in 2 years, enrol in the gym and do one exercise every day out of Aqua-Fit aerobics, Yoga, Pilates, gym work, Tai Chi…….stop smoking, plus take a walk down by the beach whenever possible.

I always remember when I was in hospital after my car crash. I’d had the “easy” repair done on my right leg on admission, but the left needed a special piece of equipment to insert the rod down inside the bone, from knee to ankle. It was problematic getting hold of the equipment, so that meant I was “Nil by mouth” from the night before, no breakfast while they waited to see if it had arrived, then cancel the op till another day………rinse and repeat every few days!! ,  When she came in to visit me that lunch time, I was sitting in bed, wrapped in an old, greyed, aertex blanket, hair dirty, beard straggly, feeling really sorry for myself. She went shopping and bought me a brightly coloured track suit ( I could only wear the top at first, ) took me down to the bathroom for a hair wash, beard trim and tidy and took me back to the ward. My sister turned up to visit me and commented how well I looked, whereupon the wife told her she should have seen me 2 hours before.

Long story short, we don’t know how lucky we are, even if it doesn’t ever feel that way!! Look after her, Bob and wish her all the best for her recovery.

EDIT – You may not see anything out of place, but be aware that she most definitely will.??

……………..I have my missus going into Grimsby Hospital tomorrow (Tues) for a new hip, has to be there at 7:30 am tomorrow. Have to be away from here by 6:15 at latest, so early night.

Thanks for the advice. Signal Box went active at around 4 pm today and now we have full 3G at home, cheers mate!

Glad that all worked out for you. You’ll be the envy of the Close now!!

Good luck to Gert for the op tomorrow, and to you for the forthcoming month or so. ? I’m dreading the day my missus goes in for hers – I hate housework with a vengeance!!

The wife drinks “Ginger and Lemon” tea as a stabiliser, if she’s feeling a bit woozy with her Menieres.  She also uses the Green tea with either lemon or peppermint if her digestion is playing up at all. In summer she drinks one of the Berry Fruit varieties.

If ever I’m a bit croaky I drink her ginger tea, but liberally laced with honey or and/or a bit of cheap brandy or scotch. Works wonders on a sore throat/tickly cough or cold-like symptoms.

Other than that I’ve always drunk tea ( made strong ) with milk ( double portion ) so that it looks weak, but tastes strong, if that makes sense. Never been a coffee lover, except for the odd weak latte/cappuccino.

The nicest Green Tea I ever drank was in Thailand, they sold it bottled like a juice. That and fresh coconut water were worth the journey alone – so refreshing!!

Edit – Lee – try some with a squirt of runny honey!! It adds more flavour with only a few calories.

Regarding the Ion, most old amps had a turntable input – this was due to the low level of signal coming from the cartridge – so that input had a pre-amp on it.

If you use the Line In phono socket on the amp, the signal from the Ion’s pre-amp should be sufficient.

Regarding the Pioneer connecting to to the TV via TosLink – I looked at the back of the amp and couldn’t see one – is it the one on the front marked audio in??

Probably down to Twitter – big companies take Social Media very seriously these days.

A friend was getting the run around from Virgin after flight tickets were re-scheduled. They’d booked for a party of 10 and paid to sit together as there were 4 generations and the youngest and eldest needed to be looked after as well. The new tickets were all over the plane and she was getting nowhere. She upped it onto twitter and they were calling her to resolve it. They ended up with an upgrade of some description and a couple of hundred pounds ( the extra paid for sitting together ) returned as compensation.

It’s the new dynamic way of getting to the heart of the company. Well done, by the way.

Permanently run a program as an administrator

Navigate to the program folder of the program you want to run. …
Right-click the program icon (the .exe file).
                          Choose Properties.
On the Compatibility tab, select the Run This Program As An Administrator option.
                          Click OK.
If you see a User Account Control prompt, accept it.

I also took exception to the AA when I was with them in the 90’s – it came free for a year with my new Bluebird. I objected to them

                            a) sending a motorbike rider to a crash scene, just to keep the response times down.

                            b) then waiting for 2 hours for a Transit van to arrive, spend 1/2 hour trying to get their dolly under the (collapsed ) wheels of a front wheel drive car with severe front impact, then

                            c) another hour for a “Parking” style lifter to put it on the back!! This, despite having relayed all the impact information to them on the first call!!

Been happy with the RAC ever since, especially this last year, when we threatened to leave because of surreptitious price rises and got the price reduced drastically to keep us with them.

I was feeling rough about 7.30 pm so I went to bed, woke up about 10.30 for a pee, went back to bed and the next thing I heard was the first alarm @ 6.55am. It doesn’t happen often.

Comparing forecasts, the wind here is a couple of mph down from yours, but yours is showing continual light/heavy rain showers – we’ve not got that atm and it’s showing sunny intervals for tomorrow.

I got about 12 hours last night, so I’m not feeling too bad – just a bit dozy!!

Combination of aching knees – did a bit too much in the garden today – and noise from the wind howling/gusting – I can’t sleep.

Not as strong as back in ’87 but noisy none the less.

Just been watching the latest Wheeler Dealer with Mike B and Ant Anstead. Their first project was an ’95 Escort RS Cosworth.

The car was originally designed by Frank Stephenson. He designed in an extra wing in between the boot-lid spoiler and the whale tail.

That was canned by the Ford bean counters to keep costs down. So you got this:-

Ant got him to draw his original idea down and made one up for the WD Cossy, and he fabricated one giving them a 30% boost in downward pressure for the rear end @ 100mph – from 69 to 94 iirc..

This is what their version looks like:-

So it just goes to show costs were more important to them than the design ethic. I can understand that with the family Sierra, but not with the Rally Spec RS Cossy.

                                        Edited to re-include first picture.

Just finished watching about 3 hours of Netflix – p*ss all else ( as usual ) on the normal channels, Sky or terrestrial – took the free trial to check out what was on offer – impressed so far.

Fireworks were great but I muted the sound – (c) rap didn’t fit the visuals!! Best Sound and Light show for fireworks I think is Jean Michel Jarre or similar “Techno Rock”.

                                          Good Luck for 2018, guys.
