BT is trying to get rid of its wired network within the next year or so to meet a 2025 objective (i.e. broadband/mobile only).

Just looked into this for the first time – it was news to me. A lot of that info relates to Business, very little data about private customers. My problem is that the myths have been true for me. I have a solid 75Meg connection and yet, whenever I have Skype’d it stutters and twitches and freezes.

With the PSTN hard line service, the worst that has happened is that I’ve come across an HR connection that has popped and crackled – solution – hang up and dial again!!  Problem solved ( unless it’s a copper wiring problem between my home and the cabinet/exchange ). Try that on Skype and it’s rinse and repeat time.

I’ve looked on Sky to see what they will offer to replace the landline, but cannot see anything at the moment. I’ll look on the Sky Community to see if there is any info on there.

Had they maintained the mask mandate for public places, the latest move to lose the requirement to self-isolate after a positive test might have been seen as bold, but allowing positive tested people to mingle, travel, drink, play etc amongst everyone else, seems to me as just plain daft.

Glad to hear you’re on the mend. Stay safe.

What about a water cooler with a fan/rad outside the case?? This was the first one I looked at.

Solves the height problem, so long as the piping will reach outside the case – or maybe even inside??

Cheers, Dave – that clarifies the file side of things.

Presumably hold fire on the backups then, or will deleting the duplicates on the NAS remove them on the PC too??

I’ve been sorting out the photos into albums on Google Photos, still a lot to do, so that may make it easier with those.

It’s looking like the NAS is the PC equivalent of the tumble dryer/dishwasher. You never really appreciate how much you needed it until after you actually get one!!👍👍

Well, MSi finally came through, authorising the Cashback – but what a palaver!!

                    @ricedg
                    – Dave, NAS has arrived and I’m going to do things gradually, but hopefully in the right way!!😄😄

First question – I know my folders are full of duplicates, files and photos, down to my methods of copying old folders onto new computers, plus a mish mash of back-up practices along with OneDrive, Google Drive, Google Photos etc. I’ve looked online and it seems that the old DSM6 Moments could manage duplicate photos, but the latest DSM 7 Synology Photos cannot. Should I rationalise my photos into a new folder and then add it to the NAS, or drop everything in and then sort the NAS folder. Looking at Visipics and Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder to sort out folders. Any experience or thoughts??

                    —————————————————-

Actually just had a doh moment!! If I clean the NAS, but then use it as a back up, all the old carp will then go into my newly cleaned folder. Please ignore dumbass question.

Thought I’d leave it on for anyone who is going to do similar to me.

Should we open a new Topic to cover setting up the NAS??

                    Cheers

                    John

It didn’t work, the seller said it has to be used within 24hrs?

That’s BS – hiding behind a time lag!! I’ve just bought one ( in mid-Nivember ) from Aclab.

I had a bit of a problem activating the W10Pro key from them, but they persevered.👍👍 The first key they sent had been used 30 times, according to the  MS phone activation line, after it blew out the online activation. But give them their due, they sent another straight away…… which also failed online. Emailed the guy back and it was third time lucky, but it took me best part of that day!! That £10 plus some time has to be better than a £50 CD with a ‘unique key’ or £100+ from M$!!

You could always just go ahead and try the online activation with your old Key – it’s all new hardware after all.

If it doesn’t work, then getting a ‘new’ working computer, using a fresh key, for the same cost or less than  a repair, seems fair to me.👍👍

Much appreciated, Dave, I will do. For the time being, I’m ticking over with the new PC, still running in parallel with the old. Once the desk arrives mid Feb, I’ll know it’s stable and reliable enough to swap over main duties to it.

At that point I’ll go back to my dual monitor setup and start on the NAS, which I’ll have by then. 👍👍

The Marsden never ceases to impress me!! I’ve just had a letter through from them, telling me to book my 4th jab – if it’s three months since the 3rd. It is and I will. Just need to go through the ‘AZ only’ scenario from last time. 👍👍 Forewarned is forearmed.😁

If you need help setting up the Synology just shout. I would accept the default apps even if you think that you won’t use them. They take up little space and are easily removed, plus I’ll bet after a while you will be interested in them.

Cheers, Dave. I’m looking at THIS from Broadband Buyer – not much difference to the cost of the bare NAS then buying and fitting the drives, plus keeps it simple for returns/warranty. Possibly bigger than I need, but it’s a PITA getting a ‘just fit’ size, then running out and upgrading!!

The Torpedo & Mortar mobos are very good. I’ve used a few this year.

It was great for ease of assembling and fitting, but MSi themselves have been dire. EBuyer had a Cashback offer for MSi products, extra back if you bought an intel CPU at the same time. It was £20 off the mobo and £15 off the CPU.  MSi’s webpage to upload details kept going back to an empty front page after filling in all the forms, serial numbers, pictures of serial numbers, copy of Invoice, Bank details etc, etc, and hitting Submit. So far, I’m up to 35 emails with their CS team!!

If you click on the title tab at the top of the column it re-arranges the order for you, name ( alpha a-z /z-a ) date (last date modified/first date ) type ( files first or folders first ). Have you mis-clicked at some stage and rearranged them??

These days a lot of programmes are trying to be ‘useful’ by autosaving PW’s. Is it the op sys trying to auto fill or your browser??  iirc you can ‘see’ PW’s within the browser security settings – which one were you using??

Is there a ‘forgot password’ option, to get you sent a link to reset it??

I used Aclab myself again the other day, always reliable.

Had a bit of a problem activating the W10Pro key from them, but they persevered. The first key they sent had been used 30 times, according to the  MS phone activation line, after it blew out the online activation. But give them their due, they sent another straight away…… which also failed online. Emailed the guy back and it was third time lucky, but it took me best part of that day!!

The computer is up and running and it is a beaut!!👍👍 I ended up going with 32Gig of ram, due more to the fact that I upgraded the stock Intel cooler to an Arctic Freezer 34 e Sports as the stock was still loose after several attempts – plastic push pins 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️- so I opted for one that bolted through the Mobo. Well pleased with it, but went for the extra ram so that there would be no more fiddling about close to it.

The case I think is brilliant for the build. It’s a bit chunky regarding overall size but very, very well laid out cable and placement wise. Bonus was the back of the CPU was accessible for the cooler upgrade, without taking the mobo out.

I went for the B560 Torpedo as it has dual ethernet ports and my son is buying me a DS220j NAS for a special birthday/Christmas present, plus I liked the look.

My main intent was to improve the multiple browser/tab situation and it has done it very well indeed.

Three browsers pages open with 10, 15 and 20 tabs on them previously used ( Task Manager Stats )  15 – 50% CPU and 75 – 90% ram, but still needing the pages to re-load when you click on their tab. New one with the same pages and tabs open use 3-10% CPU and 27 – 30% ram. Also even after left on for three days, the tabs including YT pages are still loaded and ready to go. Result!!

As Dave has said, the NVME drive makes things very much ‘click and do’, the initial loading of fresh browser pages seems to be the only hold up and that’s minimal with my 75Meg line, but just a bit more noticeable with everything else around it flying.

The only thing I’m missing is my dual monitor set up as there’s one to each for the time being. When the desk comes in four weeks time I’ll go dual again and set the old computer as a spare running to the TV in the front room, for those occasions when there’s a need!! You married guys know what I mean!!’😆🤣

HaveIbeenPwned shows that there have been no successful ‘paste-ins’ of these passwords – showing that there were actually unique. I’ll now only get very concerned if I learn that a new attack on a financially important company such as PayPal etc has leaked my current password!
