You’ll be able to claim for business miles so that will ease the fuel cost/consumption pain somewhat.

I decided to forego getting a new car because I like speccing things up – leasing made no sense for the same reason, plus not having a relevant business to claim it against. A new B Class fully specced comes in at 32k, mine ( when it comes ) at 2 1/2 years old and 15k on the clock is just over half that. Plus road tax at £20 a year!! What’s not to like.?

Those headlights with the daytime running light on must look like a wickedly grinning cat!!

That’s a little bit different to the 2-door coupe you had before!! Still a bit nippy for those country lanes you like, though.

That’s a nice colour. Mountain Grey Metallic was my second choice, I fancied one in Cavansite Blue Metallic, a rich deep blue, but they didn’t have the spec I wanted.

What influenced the size upgrade – the missus, holiday needs or beer barrel transportation??

I’ll check it out, and if it’s useful, it’ll stay. It’s an easy yes/no choice as it’s a Start/Stop button ( think old style Jags ) that plugs into the ignition socket.

Which car did you go for this time??

The manufacturers are looking to make this more difficult from now on.

                Info from Which? article :-

                What car manufacturers told us

We contacted every manufacturer mentioned to ask what they’re doing to protect new and existing keyless cars from theft.

                Honda declined to comment.

Every other manufacturer, including Ford, Group PSA (which includes Citroën, Peugeot and Vauxhall), Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Volvo and Volkswagen Group (which owns the Audi, Skoda and VW brands), told us that it takes car theft seriously and that it is constantly looking for ways to make its cars more secure.

Several pointed out that the risk of theft remains low, while Ford also advised its customers to keep their key fob in a metal case to help reduce the risk of theft.

Other manufacturers have introduced measures to protect their vehicles against the relay attack.

Older Mercedes cars – the keyless signal can be switched off by double-clicking the lock button on your key
Mazda owners – contact customer services to get the keyless function deactivated for free
New Peugeot 508 owners – contact your local dealer to get the keyless function deactivated for free.
BMW and Mercedes have gone one step further with their latest models by adding motion sensors into their key fobs. These keys won’t produce any signals when the key isn’t moving, so thieves shouldn’t be able to hack the signal when the key is safely stored at home.

All good news, but Ed’s idea of the RFID Pouch    is a good one.

I should not have started on this thread. The kitchen has at least 4 digital clocks, three of which are more or less synchronised, however the central heating is a bugger to adjust and it disagrees with the other three by five minutes. It has been like that for several years but has been ignored, but now it annoys me!

…..and most of them will need changing this weekend along with all the rest in your house!!

Don’t forget folks or you’ll be doing yourself out of an hours’ sleep – unless you’re like me where your body gets into the habit of waking up at a specific time and even when you re-programme the alarms you still wake up at the usual time and you can’t, or it’s not worth trying to, get back to sleep!!!

Very true Ed. No matter what lies and obfuscation were written on the side????? Were you on Question Time last night ?There was an audience member that stated the current cockup situation could only be worse than it is had Grayling been put in charge of it!!

That is not an especially unique list, I think I have many equivalents, though I have yet to use many of them.

It’s going to sound like I’m showing off now, but really, it’s just clarifying the info. There are a lot of familiar terms on that list, but an added word or two makes a huge difference. It was only when I googled the terms that I found out what they really do.

Active Brake Assist for example. It doesn’t just assist or boost, it can take over and bring you to a safe stop if something catches you unawares.

The MercedesMe portal also gives you access ( for a subscription ), to a lot of handy extras – did I remember to lock the car in the car park? Wife gets back to the car before me and it’s raining?? and more. And no, I won’t be getting the car to park itself, ( James Bond style?? ) using the mobile phone app however!!

Ed – that’s the Adaptive HighBeam Assist, which I really like, as I don’t like dazzling other road users ( or being dazzled myself ). Like you, I drive a lot of country lanes in the dark and the number of badly adjusted headlights and idiots who don’t know or realise/care they’re on Main Beam is ridiculous.

Simply put, Adaptive Highbeam Assist eliminates the need to flip between high and low beams while also ensuring the path ahead is fully lit without ever straining the eyes of other drivers. As other cars approach, the headlamp range automatically adjusts based on the distance of oncoming traffic.

The COMAND Online, which is the main one I was looking for, gives you access, via a stalk or a button on the multi-function steering wheel, to get anything from Radio, Music, Map, Phone or setting SatNav destinations etc using a spoken command, while keeping your eyes on the road, instead of looking for the button on the dashboard.

I have to admit to being a bit biased towards the ‘toys’ side of this argument and have spent a long time looking for my next car, because I wanted it fully specced, ( see the list below ) which looks more like a Christmas wish list than an equipment list.??

The reason for wanting them is down to the fact that my current car ( bought at 4yo and now 10yo ) came fully specced – I didn’t actually know the full extent when I bought it but I spent the first few weeks RTFM’ing like you wouldn’t believe.

I don’t think I’ve particularly had lots of problems with the toys, just the usual mechanical servicing and wear and tear replacement, except in the last year and a half. That was down to Exhaust Gas Recirculation problems ( burnt out servo motor ) and the  automatic gearbox ( ECU ), but they were both expensive fixes.

I did have for some time, a problem with the car showing an engine fault and the ESP and run flat indicator lights showing, plus taking it out of cruise control – this, strangely, was cured by replacing the brake light switch!! That one had me bottling it for a while expecting my third expensive bill, but no,  £15 and half hours’ work cured it!!!

I was surprised that one bean could go like, that as nothing has been done to the lights apart, from polishing out the years of grime and sun discolouration.

They’re mostly adjusted by spring mounted threads, that are designed to resist vibration but can’t defy it, and wear over time. Also mis-alignment can be caused by parking bumps, ie other people’s sh1te parking knocking into your car.

Dave’s comment in the iThing thread about a camera on the till ( but not just there ) is very true, especially if you’re out and about on hospital runs etc. At least you had the right idea in getting the kids trained up in food and hospitality – it’ll stand you in good stead when you need emergency staff!!

It’s weird that Imagebin errors like that – it was always so reliable.

If you ignore the bad gateway or error this’nthat and just close and re-open then it works.

A check of the garden for new ‘produce’ produced an image of this odd fungus, several outcrops of which have been noticed,

That looks quite familiar. We get that sometimes too. I think it’s a ‘by-product’ of dog poo. No matter how often you clear up, ( my neighbour calls it clearing land mines!! ) there’s sometimes just a small residue left and this is what grows. It gets bagged with the rest of the poo and I pour boiling water on where the stalk or root would be, that clears it up in that spot, but there are bound to be others later on.

Error on the 2nd ( logitech ) image,  displayed second time of trying – what a difference!!

I did a lot of research on the individual spec that I felt I wanted. Last year in July, I had a big repair done on mine and we had a wedding to go to in North London the weekend it was in. They gave me a 5 month old B Class as a Courtesy Car, specced up well, but not completely what I was looking for. That was it – I knew what I wanted, it was all down to when.

Had some money came in in March, so that dealt with a chunk of the cost and also indicated the timing, ie when the latest Reg came in, there would be a solid supply of second hand late models.

I spent a lot of time researching and streamlining searches on the MB Approved Used website and Autotrader, with email notifications. In a very short space of time I knew what I would be going for, it was all down to waiting.

                                            Good luck with your search.
