May 24, 2019 at 4:13 pm in reply to: Has anyone else been offered the Windows 10 May 2019 Update ? #33596
The country has just been offered a ‘May’Update – does that count???????
I’m not sure that low mileage is everything.
I’d agree with that. I’ve just put the wife’s 52 Ka in for it’s annual service and MoT. Mileage is 32108, last years’ mileage was 31543. However, the one thing that I noticed was that before I could get it to the garage I had to charge the battery, the brakes squeaked and grumbled for the first 5 minutes from where it had been standing. There’s a CV gaiter that has perished and both sills at the rear need attention.
There’s a lot to be said for regular use, so long as maintenance is kept up.
May 21, 2019 at 11:57 pm in reply to: BoJo's Tory Leadership Chances boosted by Labour Supporters #33523As I said though I really don’t get why they feared Rory Stewart more than all the others after BoJo. I am totally unimpressed by him and to me he projects neither personality nor substance.
No, but he does emanate integrity and has put his job where his mouth is (was) and that makes him stand out in the current crowd. He put it out there, that if the prison statistics didn’t turn upwards after a year of being in the job, you wouldn’t need to sack him, he’d resign. If only Chris Grayling got infected with that level of personality or substance.
A little less now than before, when he wasn’t in the cabinet, but he was one of the few that gave you an answer instead of prattling on about manifestos, best intentions and honouring an outcome!! Maybe that’s why Labour have a fear of him.
The point I’m making is that debate, no matter how entrenched and immovable various parties views appear to be, is still worthwhile. The trick though is surely to ensure that one understands the difference between opposing arguments and ‘an argument’, if you see what I mean.
That only happens when people take on board the opinions of others without just repeating their position.
Sadly that hasn’t happened here, which is why I’ve mostly developed a “Read only” status on this Topic, to see if I’ve missed something on the news.
There was sniping on both sides and perhaps who started it is immaterial. That said there are a couple of observations that I believe I am entirely justified in making.
That just smacks of “Before we stop arguing, I’d just like to say…………………………!!!!!” which just regurgitates and continues the situation without any change adopted.☹☹
Worse than that JCD: Yesterday we went to Cleethorpes and it was a perfectly clear day. So clear that we could see East Yorkshire on the other bank very clearly.
Yes, I was gutted – drove back home on Saturday from rain, through rain and back into rain. Then Sunday was fine and sunny and Monday has been a bit better. Did we choose the wrong week or what – we thought to avoid Easter but it was lovely then too!!!?☹
North Norfolk can be seen from Skegness on a clear day, more clearly still from Gibraltar Point (well worth a visit):
I was up there last week and visited Cromer , driving through some of the villages on the North Norfolk coast. Weather was so sh1tty I had trouble seeing the wind farm, let alone Skeggy!!!???
The wife took that a while back, but didn’t get on with it. She felt woolly headed and dopey in the mornings.
THIS gives a good write up on it.
Good luck.
I hope all my fellow pensioners on here will welcome me to their ranks
I bid you a hearty welcome to the next stage of your life!!??? You’ll find it a lot different.
I had two practise runs at it, first when I took early redundancy from BT and went to work with /for – I’m still not really sure – the wife. That was a complete transition from employee to part boss!!
The second time was when we stopped work when the wife got ill. That was also a complete change which included selling the house to ( theoretically because that was caught up in the financial crash, Dec ’08) go mortgage free because we were both at home, not earning, moving out to the country ( cheaper properties ) and starting over.
You know yourself, ( be very honest ) so it’s a case of recognising what will work for you and whether the risk merits the reward. Best of luck.
Welcome, Les. Long may it continue.?
@oldles – Hi Les, not sure if you’ve resolved this at all, but I was up in the loft sorting through for a power supply I needed for an external enclosure, when I spotted THIS. Comes boxed with manual, CD and low profile bracket and both aerials.
It says HERE that it will work with linux.
If it’s any use to you, drop me a PM and it’s yours.
John
I also loved this in the day, flexible set included!! ?
JayCeeDee, no post codes, not created back then.
Les – that’s why I had it in quotation marks.??
“Horace Batchelor’s “Famous Infra-Draw Method” – God, Dave that takes me back a few years, quite a few years – quite a few years too many actually!! Lol
I remember that too – they used to spell K E Y N S H A M out and as far as “postcodes” went, it was ‘near’ Bristol!!
It looks like he’s just nicked a Crusader’s horse!!!???
April 20, 2019 at 9:57 pm in reply to: Read First if flying on a Boeing 737 Max–or maybe not! #32830Yes, I knew Lyons were the leaders, but EARLY fifties? Maybe, Mr Google would no doubt know.

How a chain of tea shops kickstarted the computer age
In November 1951 a British company switched on the world’s first business computer, writes Christopher Williams. What annoys me most about the school 20mph zones is not that they’re there – there is a need for them – but
a) where they choose to site them, one ludicrous example is on the A28 between Westgate and Margate, which is a 2 x 2-lane dual carriageway, which was patrolled by lollipop persons ( or at least they used to be ) with parent-parking along a 200 yd stretch either side of the school gates, making it a single lane at school run times, when it becomes a 20mph zone controlled by dual amber flashing lights. This brings me to
b) you can tell where it starts by the first flashing amber lights on a 20mph sign-written plate, but you can’t tell when you exit the zone – it isn’t signed as such!!! This leads to drivers that don’t know the area stuck doing 20mph – as they should – for longer than they need to be, because they don’t know when they passed back into the 40 zone.
A very good idea for some school entrances, but needs a clear re-think before being applied unilaterally.
Another big plus vote for TomTom Speed Camera app. Current built in Satnav functions well but doesn’t integrate well. Should have a better try out next week when I’ll be able to see what combination works best for me.
Me too!!??
The missus suffers with a disc that came out then shrivelled after being mis-diagnosed as arthritis and left for 5 years, so I know what you mean. Her sister is just about to go in for surgery on three herniated discs and severe spinal stenosis – doesn’t get a break, that one.?
Im sorry, but I don’t care if its US made or UK. How many cizzies get to say they ejected firm an F-xx he will dine out on that for life.
Steve – he’s 64 and if he was a cat the events of that day probably took at least 6 of his lives!!! He’d better start out on the apres dinner circuit pdq or they’ll be writing that story as an obit!!???
Happy Days – I hope it all works out for you both.
