I’ve been using Speedtest for years now and whenever I’m using it in earnest, after a fault or an upgrade, I actually run it through different servers, Canterbury, Maidstone and London are my goto ones.
Glad you’re all OK, was wondering how the current situation would hit your new one!!
Not the foggiest idea on your proposal above, but good luck with it all. :good:
In actual fact PM started a topic with that very drive 2 years ago and a lot of people got on board with it. :good:
Yes, that self same SSD from that self same company. It’s been running W10 faultlessly for over a year now I think. ( touch wood!! ) I’ve got everything else on a spinner. :good:
Not sure how long the virus and the immediate after effects are likely to be with us, but I was gladdened by the news that Love Island has been postponed till next year, and who knows, maybe by then, people will have come to realise its’ true insignificance!! :yahoo: :yahoo: Along with other reality programmes of its ilk!! :good:
I’m considering “PPE” strategies and am coming down to thinking that face covering will be the key, some sort of stretchy bandanna for nose and mouth and my protective specs
I started out using those sort of improvised attempts, but found the biggest problem, being a glasses wearer, was fogging up, both outside, and going into shops from outside. I now have a basic cotton mask that is better, but the wife had one sent from her sister, ( her OH is in the motor trade and I think she got it from him ). It has 2 valves in it and she finds it a lot easier and less claustrophobic. It’s a thin stretchy cotton/latex material with velcro for fixing at the back of her neck and a metal strip to fashion around her nose.
I think it will become the norm for when things ease out – we can manage to keep 2 metres apart but can’t control what’s in the air in our immediate vicinity. If we can add a barrier, or a disincentive to touching our mouths/eyes in public, it just makes sense.
It’s good to hear there’s still work about. Best of luck. :good:
VFM Has been missing to for ages.
I’ve just looked at his profile and it’s showing as blocked, as is Richard. Can we unblock them pro temps and message them accordingly?? 🤞Tough times. 🙁
AOL have been causing problems with day to day operations for some time now. Coincidentally, or not!!, from about the same time as they sent emails out to all account holders about OATH overseeing AOL, whilst still under the Verizon umbrella.
I bucked at some of their t’s and c’s but stayed on for a while, but problem after problem has led me to migrate almost completely to Gmail. AOL whinged about letting Thunderbird access their emails, the easiest method for me to collect my mail, as it wasn’t secure enough apparently, but accessing their mail page from a browser became problematic as their 2-step authorisation meant
- Web browser
- Start login
- Get code by Text
- insert code
- complete login
and if you clicked the wrong button by mistake it sent you a password reset link – I just got fed up. Prior to all that, having LastPass, I just clicked on the button to login in – simples!!
I’ve installed the AOL app on my phone and now at the beginning of each month I run through it, clear out the (multitude ) of cr*p and forward anything important to my gmail account, migrating each account that used aol on the login. 12 months after the start of that process I’ll close it down completely.
The sooner i’m finally rid, the better.
April 28, 2020 at 3:55 pm in reply to: TV no internet, USB not recognised. Sony Bravia KDL 40RD 453 #42847JayCeeDee: Thanks for the offer, but reading below will show that the TV ethernet port is dead. No it isn’t that Sky device. I have trawled through Sony Support website, most of which gives the same info as the Manual, but it gives the confusing information that, even though their own device is ‘no longer available’, they expressly forbid using any other device as it may damage the TV. Well thank you Sony, when I buy another it will not be branded Sony.
No worries, Bob – as per my first reply, it sounded like the TV’s ethernet port was playing games. Good luck sorting it out.
April 28, 2020 at 12:58 am in reply to: TV no internet, USB not recognised. Sony Bravia KDL 40RD 453 #42820Bob, is THIS the item that’s no longer available, or similar to it?? I got given it by Sky to connect my old HD box ( may even have been my old Sky+ box ) to the Internet for On Demand, as my router was in another room. It connected to my router wirelessly and the ethernet plug went into the back of my Sky box. It just worked.
If the general thoughts are that it will do that for your TV, unless your Ethernet port isn’t working, you’re welcome to it.👍
Edit – Extra thought – didn’t Dave say, in your other Topic, USB sticks don’t stream, so maybe that’s why it wouldn’t be recognised. Double check with the external drive, but try using one that has its’ own power supply. Not all disks can run off the USB socket power alone.
You’re right I used to, it stopped working. It would light up but no drives were seen.
Did you try it with a different cable, sometimes they were a bit iffy. Mine uses a standard USB to Mini USB cable. If you have a known working one ( some older SatNavs used them to link to a PC or to be powered from a lighter USB socket ) it might be worth a punt.
iirc, you used to have an HDD docking station, if it’s anything like mine, there’s a built-in card slot for SD cards.
It won’t be USB3, but may well be fast enough to stream. Have you thought about checking that out??
When I couldn’t get on my PC, I either used my iPad, ( much easier for these fingers ) or as a last resort, my phone, to access the site.
I hate using the TV for anything, the interface is so reminiscent of PC’s in the 90’s/00’s or games consoles.
The wife is using YouTube on the TV as part of her exercise regime, and I’ve found it easier to do all the accessing and setting up her videos on the PC and then using the TV, logged in to my account.
It sounds like the windows update is being kept in storage, after the update has gone through ( or it’s keeping a copy of the old set up ). It may be that there is a setting in the update/security section that deletes either the old after the new has been installed, or deletes the update files when completed, thus keeping your larger free space.
Dave would probably know better than me for specifics.
I’ve just finished mowing the lawns, which doesn’t sound much really, but it involved me getting an old mower out of retirement, a Qualcast Classic 35S, not a bad mower in its’ day, but it’s been sitting in a shed for about 4 years after it stopped running right.
In between then and now, we’ve had a guy in to do the garden and keep the lawns tidy, but the situation now is he’s locked down and not coming for the foreseeable future.
I checked out the spark and the plug and both seemed OK, so I took the carb off and stripped it down, cleaned it out, reset the jets to basics and now it’s running much better. The foam air filter had disintegrated, so a washing up scourer had the nylon scraped off it and trimmed to size. It’ll let the air in and keep the grass out, that’s all it needs to do for now. The cutters are a a bit intermittent, if left to their own devices, but I’ve over-adjusted the cable so they run all the time. Possible cable stretch or similar, but it’ll do for now, until I see whether it’s worth the investment for some spare parts. It’s a heavy bu**er, so my back’s playing up tonight, so I’ll take some painkillers and sleep well tonight!!
It was fun getting my hands dirty again and being a DellOrto carb reminded me of my old Ducati 250.
Does the “registration” process also partition the disk JCD ?
No idea of the process it undergoes, the manual only mentions it as registering or de-registering!!
I wonder if Sony TV’s use the same “interesting” formatting that they use on the Play Station ?
No idea, never had one.
My Samsung TV has an option to format a HDD to its liking, it is meant to be able to use drives that are pre formatted FAT32 or ExFAT but it often can’t. Drives formatted by the TV show up just fine on a Windows PC though.
That’s the process that happens when the drive is ‘registered’, it gives you the usual warning about losing any data.
It does say you’ll have to re-format the drive in the PC, for use on the PC.
I’ve also got a Sony Smart TV, and they are picky about the disks they like and those they don’t.
I printed out the section of the manual, as I knew I wouldn’t remember it!!
- If the TV has more than one USB port, use the port labelled HDD REC.
- Press whichever button on the remote that gets you to terrestrial TV – mine is Digital/Analogue.
- Press HOME button on the remote, then navigate to and select Settings ( toolbox logo)
- Select cabinet logo ( System Settings ), then Recording Set-up, then HDD Registration.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to register the USB HDD device.
You then use either the one touch record with the REC button, or go via the Guide for timer recording.
To watch recorded content, Press HOME, the navigate to and select Channels. Select Recordings, then Title, then Play.
To Delete a watched programme, Select HOME, Select Channels/Recordings/content, then press OPTIONS button on remote, then select DELETE.
Hope it’s similar or work-out-able on yours.
Good luck.
VFM Has been missing to for ages.
EdP addressed that a short while ago, when he wondered whether he had been co-opted into the process, because of his level of expertise in that field. Were that to be the case, it would also have included some sort of gag order for the duration.
Maybe there will be some interesting stories after the event??!!
@Sawboman !! Has anybody had an update from Richard at all?? Saying a quick prayer that he’s OK.
I can’t believe it’s five months from the last enquiry as to his well-being, I know there’s a lot going on around us at the moment, but as stated above, his input is missed.
