I would personally steer clear of any boxes that do not have Win11, as Win10 loses support in a couple of years time and the CPU/peripheral reqs for Win11 are a mess and you may select a box which can never be upgraded.

I’ve just realised that my current rig only needed TPM2.0 enabled to be Win11 compliant. Anybody have any experience or views on W11 – does it work better or is it just  a prettier W10? All views either way appreciated.

What sort of budget are you looking at, Dave?? These days, having the OS on an NVME drive with an SSD for files and a large spinner for storage is ideal for fast, fluid working. 16Gb is definitely better than 8Gb if they have lots of files open at once. Just those three things will kick off at ~ £300. Mobo and CPU all depends on the rest of your budget.

Thanks Lee – whatever you did, the site has come back much more responsive. Hardly any delay at all from clicking on the topic to the page appearing!! The spinning wheels of ‘…thinking about it..’ are gone. Well done.

Edit  –  it even posts faster!😃

There are all sorts of rumours surrounding BoJo, even one where he stands for election in North Thanet against one of his biggest critics, Sir Roger Gale!!

It’s true though – he is a unifying agent. He has united one Labour voter  in this household and the other Conservative voter to unify against him and vote for the Independent Sir Rog in order to see the back of him once and for all!!

There are some Audiophiles who reckon that the purest reproduction of musical sound only comes from valve amplification!! There is such a huge variance of theories, but it all boils down to what best suits your ears and their ability to hear.

I just use the Windows Task Manager ( right click on Taskbar ) as a guide.

As a non-gamer, my problem was with multiple browser pages with multiple tabs open. I now have 4 x 8GB sticks of DDR4 RAM. With 10 browser pages open and 120 odd tabs, my usage is still only at 55%.

The 4-stick solution seems to be effective across many different scenarios.

My early thoughts are with Pylontech batteries, and Victron Inverters. Early days, but I like the 10 year warranty ( 7 + 3 ) on the modular batteries that can be stacked or racked, and I came across Victron when doing the Campervan Solar for a friend and was impressed. That covers the likely what, but how is a different ball-game.😃 Wiring it to charge from solar, take over on a power cut and isolate where necessary will be interesting.

That would bring your UPS substitute in at ~£3k instead of 5k, barring any other accessories required.

                        Life is never easy

Yes, it’s that balance between the increased cost, in case of a rare ( but increasingly likely ) occurrence of power cuts, ( short or longer term ) and automatic off-grid capability. And that’s before you start to think about AC or DC coupled systems, the extra cost of an inverter to supply ‘critical’ house consumption, etc.

Time for a lot more research.

I think that people with solar, ( me among them) who thought they were aspiring to being independent, are now looking to install batteries or upgrade their battery capacity to even maintain that direction. I seriously wish that we had installed batteries at the same time as our solar – and not just the VAT-saving aspect. There appears to be a shortage of batteries atm in the market with rumours of 6-month delays or more.

You may or may not have seen, I built my last PC just before Christmas last year as a 70th present to myself. Family and friends contributed to the pot and I got stuck in.
The brain still worked, the fingers less so!! But I took my time, researched the hell out of the best way to go. PC architecture has changed massively in the past 5 years. Who would have thought about having NVME drives for the OS and 500GB – 1TB SSD’s as data drives on a basic mid-level PC??

I thought about my day to day usage and typically I would have between 6 and 10 browser pages open at any one time – I did say I did an awful lot of research – with typically 10 to 20 tabs open. Looking at Task Manager showed me where I was short on resources, in my case CPU and memory.

I got a mid – upper range CPU ( i5 10500 ) with 6 cores and 12 threads, with 32 GB Dual Channel DDR4 from Corsair. Currently sat at 5% CPU usage and 48% Memory usage – 8 x browsers and 122 x tabs. Fans hardly heard and temps at 25 – 28C. Very pleased all round. Details of the components etc from DaveR’s answers to JohnBarry’s POST .

the other way was to right-click on the ‘your computer’ icon and that throws up various properties which may be what you need.

Just about to do some re-seeding on our back lawns, one at a time or I’ll knock myself silly for a few days. Been scarifying bit by bit over the last few weeks with bags and bins full of moss and thatch. There’s still more dead moss that needs ripping out on a deep localised scarify but at least the dark patches are easier to spot against the hay!! Prior to the water shortages I had been watering and looking after the two small lawns nearest the bungalow, but left the back two to fend for themselves. Our gardening friend said that they might look very dead atm, which they did, but they are in fact just dormant, waiting for rain. That has proved to be true over the past fortnight. I’ve got 6 large bags of compost and some left over top soil to mix in and spread over the worst patches and then re-seed.

Since the ( 28 ) conifers came down to provide winter sun for our solar panels, the garden has been in a bit of a state, but at least it’s easier to deal with the lawns now they’re in the open and not having all the moisture sucked out of the ground.

Plans are to do a lot of work making the garden somewhere to sit and relax, we’ll be getting somebody in for that, my manual labour days are long gone!!

Happy Birthday, Lee – hope it was a good one

That’s brilliant – good progress, and with the solar, it can only get better.👍🏻

Being at home all day means that we can opt for our brains to do the automating. All for the good, really as the wife’s proficiency in Home Automation is tested by the Google Mini in the spare bedroom. She can just about get it to play some Country music when she does the ironing!!

Your Smart meter in house display will probably suit her better, it does the wife. If I show her the app for our panels ( ShinePhone) I can quickly lose her, but the DISPLAY is quite straightforward.

The second button will give you the post panel (grid )consumption for the electric plus gas to present time. Press again and it gives ‘Used so far today’ for Electric , Press again for Gas. The first button marked ‘Now’ will give you an indication of whether you are consuming from the grid or feeding back in to it. Mine has the electric lightning dash with an arrow pointing in to a pylon. Presently showing my electric cost as £0.00 and feeding 1.03kw back in to the grid.

I follow a YouTube channel where the guy has gone a bit OTT with the panels and batteries, but he has some good explanations and figures using the Home Automation app.

@ Ed P – he also integrates separate thermometers into HA iirc.

If you were glad to be rid of the “Grey Lady” Theresa May, don’t be holding out any false hopes for Liz Truss, you’re gonna get more of the same from her. The minute anybody tries to get past her ‘headline quotes’ for any detail, she doesn’t have it. If I hear how she will take advantage of the ‘Post-Brexit Opportunities’ one more time I’m going to lose my lunch!!

However, in the next debate there has to be a better moderator to keep things flowing and under control because Sophie Raworth failed miserably. No jumping in over Rishi’s continual talking over and interrupting, no chasing Liz to expand on her by-lines and no switching off the microphones when either one doesn’t play by the rules. The first one last night was more of a stampede than a debate. Rishi came out best, but couldn’t be said to have won the debate!!
