I try to keep an extra eye out for number plates with the green bar on the left, and give them extra room accordingly, however, there are a huge number of EV’s and Hybrids that haven’t opted for them so you can still get caught out.

Hiya Steve – good to see you’re still around!!👍👍😀

Still here – always checking out for new posts.

Dealing with a few problems here and family with health issues, but I never was one for ranting, and having dealt with a problem and put it to bed for the time being, can’t bear spending more time talking it over and re-hashing!! But that’s just me!!

Copy from topic “The Good Ship MM Has Finally ‘Sunk'” by Doctor Yorkie on December 8 2016

The Editor posted on the official MM Forum that the last issue would be 2912/16. Sad times.

There is no official word on the fate of their forum. Jason has speculated that it will close when the subscription ends.

Let’s hope Lee can help us out…

I think MM Forum struggled on for a few months after that, possibly until June or July of 2017 but it was missing more than it was there.

Thanks, Lee.👍😀 One thing, when we reply to a topic, ie, the box I’m writing in now, the writing is quite small, grey and pale. Could the font be sized up a notch or two and go bold?

I also had problems accessing a message from the front page. Can ‘Messages’ go into the burger drop down box?

              Cheers

Edit. – it’s fine once it has been posted, but difficult to see before that.

                I ended up getting her a renewed HP Elitebook 850 G3 from Amazon. 16Gb, 240Gb SSD,i5-6300u for £370.
Set it up and loaded her bits and pieces on to it and she’s delighted. 12 month warranty gives peace of mind. Spanking condition, gleaming and no visible signs of wear or scratches, and I was looking hard!!
Checked back over the site and Dave had sung Amazon’s praises as well as the HP, and so far that has been proven.

I view the AI or Armageddon concept as I do life – always expect the unexpected, just be ready for it when it turns up!! As ever problems arise, even with humans when control is given to something or someone that should only be giving opinions – mmmm, back to Politics again!!

I see you’ve been keeping busy writing a novel while the site was down, Ed!😂

The relatively long time to recharge is due to charging rates dropping like a stone above 80%, for which reason we normally only charge to the 80% level.

EV Batteries will also last longer if you stop at 80%, less stress on the battery and electrics. Great info HERE.

PM – There are some chargers at local IKEA’s – Cardiff, Reading and Lakeside, if they’re anywhere near your route to the girlfriend.

One other thought, Ed, iirc you have solar panels. If you get a home battery fed from the panels – or cheap off peak electric – this will act as a better backup than UPS’s.

The Tesla Powerwall and Gateway2 is one ( very expensive ) option. Other batteries and equipment can do the same, providing almost instantaneous changeover ( ~20 – 40ms ) from grid to battery when a power cut occurs. It has been said that PC’s won’t notice this or crash within this gap.

You can also select which circuits ( ring mains or lighting ) are prioritised when the power goes down. This could be to keep router, TV, media box, combi boiler, microwave and fridges and freezers powered up.

Thanks Ed – I have already tried the reset method and it made a marginal improvement, but the keyboard issue is the worst – not worn or sticky, at least six or more letters in total, from each row are not typing out. Huge problems with passwords and searches. An old wired USB keyboard is keeping things going there, but it’s a PITA!!

It’s time to upgrade – she’s had it two or three years now and it came from our son who upgraded after two years. I’ve already replaced the power socket following the lead being kicked out, and it’s working loose again now.

but I’m not sure what will happen when landlines go Internet only.

VOIP can forward calls to mobiles in the event of internet being down, but then, as you have highlighted above, how long will mobiles last??

We are setting a lot of faith in VOIP, but landlines were always impervious to power cuts as the power ( 50v ) came from the exchange, which had both battery and generator backup systems. I would have wanted both, but that option is being taken from us by BT’s unilateral decision. There is a glimmer of hope, as per this BBC article :-

What if there is a power cut?
Old landline phones receive power via the line itself, which is separate to the household mains electricity supply, and often remain functional even during a power cut.

Internet-based phones, however, rely on home routers or similar devices.

Ofcom requires phone operators to come up with back-up solutions, though, to ensure people can call emergency services.

Virgin, for example, intends to offer battery-powered back-up lines to customers with accessibility needs or who cannot rely on a mobile phone during a power cut.

The battery provides 24 hours of standby and one hour of talk time.

And an engineer will install a small box in the customer’s home so they can connect.

That is something of a half measure though and needs further thought/planning. I thought that I might pre-empt this by taking a business broadband connection with Sky that offered VOIP. That was scuppered when they told me that I would need to change my home telephone number. I declined!!

Edit – WTF??!! – I had to copy the article into WordPad and then copy back into the topic to remove all the text formatting etc in order to get it back into readable English!!

Both the wife and I succumbed two weekends ago and I’m testing negative now, since 5 days ago, but feeling very rough still. It put me in bed for the first four days plus prolonged spells sleeping for the next week, I suspect that temperature regulation was the charm, more than actual sleep, I know that just getting up to the loo set off a sequence of sneezes, racking coughs and occasional upchucks!!! It’s taken me a lot longer than the wife, but she had to be prescribed steroids and anti-biotics to fight off an additional chest infection, because of her COPD and I’m sure this assisted her speedy recovery. When I asked on the 111 service whether I qualified for the anti-virals, I actually did, having had Lymphoma, but was disqualified because it was in remission!! Talk about a good news/bad news call!!!

Wages and ‘conditions’ should never be negotiated at the same time – one always provides the stumbling block for the other to fail. There is no point in getting a 2-4% wage rise if there is a requirement for a 5-10% productivity increase.

The nurses know that they won’t get 19%, but the 13-year reign of the last four purse-tightening, budget-slashing PM’s has left them sorely behind, along with many others in the public sector, teachers, police, etc. Having said that, I couldn’t understand how refuse drivers wanted the same as long distance lorry drivers, different skills.

Any wage demand is, at it’s most basic, horse trading. If you would settle for 12%, you don’t ask for 13% or you would end up at 8%. Just like buying a car or a house, you always go in with an offer that’s lower than what you’re prepared to pay, then settle somewhere in the middle, where both parties are happy.

Once set up TPM+Secure Boot is invisible, but you must remember to make a Recovery Drive if you don’t then TPM/Secure Boot will gang up against you when things go pear-shaped.

Dave, that was from Ed to reassure me after the talk about W11, when I said I that I had considered TPM ( a core requirement for w11 ) to be ~ ‘sorcery’ and didn’t want to encrypt my PC without understanding totally the encryption part of it in case of any problems down the line. Basically, he was saying ( and Dave added further in a later post ) that it is all automatic, behind the scene, so long as you kept the encryption key ( Recovery Drive ) separate ( and it forces you to do so on setup ).

Dave may go into more detail regarding setup.

I think that the TPM shenanigans is what will put me off upgrading, I hate being under a restrictive environment that is unfamiliar to me, that is where simple problems turn into dramas which turn into crises. There doesn’t seem to be enough of an upside.

                                          Cheers Ed👍.
