I said there was going to be a part 2 to my article on PC interrupts but its taken me longer to write than I thought. For the monent I am posting the first paragraph for review and comment.

I promice the rest of part 2 really does cover message signaled interupts and I will post it when its finished.

There is also now going to be a part 3 that covers how Windows handles interrupts.

If your interested in how Windows is developing and what’s comming next then it’s probably worth signing up as a Windows insider anyway. Just make sure your in the slow ring thoug or you get notified of barely tested Beta’s every five minutes 🙂

Another word I don’t like is “Metadata”. I have nothing against the word it’s self as it is what it is, reference data or data about data if you like. My annoyance comes from the fact that it’s never explained in text that uses it. I first came across metadata when I was delving into the GEM OS on the Atari ST and it had me baffled for weeks because at the time I couldn’t find anywhere to look it up.

Yes Dave once it got in. The info on admin logins is really just for info but it dose show that just blindly ticking that UAC box is a bad idea. On a side note did you know that SMB v1.0 is also known as the common internet file system and it was submitted to the IETF in 1996 ? They must have been napping at the time.

Just a note on the run as admin option mentioned above. Windows XP created just one local session (session 0) when it booted and everything ran in that. Windows Vista and above use terminal services to create the initial session (still session 0) that runs system services and presents you with the secure login box. If you log in as a standard user then the windows session manager creates session 1 for all your processes to run in and marks it with a standard user security token. If you log in as admin then windows STILL creates session 1 with a standard user token but it also creates session 2 with an admin security token. Most of the time admin accounts are running in session 1 with all its restrictions but they have the authority to switch to session 2. The switch over is handled by the user access control (UAC) service which can be trigered by runing a program that requires admin rights or by using the run as admin option for any program.

Thanks Ed. Spelling never was my strong suit in fact I only scraped a grade 3 CSE at english.

I have always had a passing interest in chemistry but I only covered it in general science. When the time came to choose options for my final two years at school chemistry clashed with either physics or design and technology on the time table so as I always saw myself in engineering chemistry lost.

Ed. As a chemist this should be a simple one for you but it’s bugged me since secondary school. What exactly is a “mol” as in a mili mol of this or that ? Sometimes it just seems to be a convenient unit but at other times it seems to be an exact measure refering to molecular weight that has had two different ways of calculating it.

Duke. I use your method when I can get away with it. I have the Philips RQ1175 and it comes with a beard trimmer attatchment that I use without the guard.

Ed. What course was that ? Quantum mechanics is pretty heavy stuff. The book you recomend sounds like the sort of thing I was looking for years ago. You can’t invent an understanding of a problem by yourself every time without a few hints.

Since we have mentioned maths teachers then I have to say that in my experience the worst one’s are those that really don’t understand their subject. I can spot them because they can’t explain. They have learned enough method to pass their exams but thats it. If you ask them to put things another way they can’t. The worst case was a teacher I had in secondary school who’s answer to every question was “it’s on the board”.

I have much the same problem but it covers my whole face. My beard grows in swirls so i cant shave with or against the grain. I can wet shave once but it leaves raised red bumps around the base of the stubble. If i try it again the next day then the rasor takes the tops off the bumps leaving me a mess. The only rasor I can use is the Philips rotary type but the one I have was about £200.

I doubt there was much the NHS team could have done about it anyway because of the little reported bug in Windows.

Two days ago the security people at Google found an exploit in the MS Malware Protection Engine that allows the running of Java Script in an email without even opening it.

MS MPE runs with NT AUTHORITY permissions and it scans incoming mail in the background. The bug causes MS MPE to actually execute Java Script in the BODY of an email !

MS put out a patch within 6 hours of the discovery but these things take time to propagate. Hope you all have yours :good:

                                            1. Oh I forgot that one ?. I was working for mercury communications in 1994 when they decided to send everyone on the ” Inagine 97″ course. They spent millions hiring a US motivaton firm and building some domes in the NEC car park. Spouted a load of nonsence about breaking out of our paradigm and how we were “already listening” until one of our team stood up and said we already have a word for that in english and its a preconseption.
