Oops Marc, sorry ?
Hi Mark
Could you just tell me the exact message you get with internet explorer please ?
Did you follow my link anyway Boris ?
It may come in handy one day.
Oh i see. Your post came in as i was typing mine.
Cross perposes then ?
What machine are you talking about ?
Well its a funny thing then that the first thing he says in his excuse my igorance post is that he accepted Microsofts offer of W10 offer and installed it ?
Did you look to see if your W10 licence is linked to a Microsoft account ?
Have a look at this link https://www.windowscentral.com/how-re-activate-windows-10-after-hardware-change
I find that a lot of digital devices these days have really bad analogue input circuits, if they have them at all. Often it is a cheap Opamp ment for digital use pressed into service as an audio amp.
If your device has an AUX input jack try plugging something in there and see how it sounds.
Now there is a complex subject Ed !
My mother has a proper FM roof Arial so I just plug devices into that and if they still sound rubbish I assume they are rubbish ?
As far as I can tell the media creation tool actually gets you a full copy of the latest version of Windows, not just some upgrade version.
Installing Windows from a USB stick has caused me that driver problem before on some hardware but booting from a DVD has always worked. The key is to download the ISO and then make sure you burn it as a bootable image.
Its worth trying the upgrade without entering a product key while connected to the internet. Give it a few minutes and you may find you are suddenly activated.
You may have also linked your copy of Windows 10 to your Microsoft account during your last upgrade so its worth a look.
On the plus side the consumer electronics control (CEC) over HDMI part works as advertised. The sound bar and Talk Talk STB are both recognised and I can control them both with the TV remote. Amazing, apart from the lack of sound of course ?
I thought I had hedged my bets a bit with the TV and sound bar because I got them both from Richer Sounds and as they are both top sellers I thought any problems would have been spotted before. Not so though because when I told them about the problem they tried it themselves and were surprised it didn’t work ! They now reckon its something to do with the telly outputing Dolby Digital + over HDMI which the sound bar can’t decode. They are going to let me know.
Just for the record, Windows networking tries to resolve/discover local computer names in the following order 1) DNS, 2) LLTD, 3) NetBios Name Service. Its the last two that MS normally buggers about with.
I think I should have mentioned that the network responder uses the link layer topology discovery protocol and its the same one used to get a network map. This protocol is not totally secure but its no worse than the NetBios naming service and all that master browser stuff. Anyway I use it and on a small Workgroup network I don’t see the harm.
Corse I could be wrong ?
One other thing i just remembered. One reason i have a seperate optical cable between the The PC and the sound bar is because the PC refused to recognise my old Hitachi TV as an audio end point. My BenQ moniter worked fine but the TV was greyed out as an option. When I get back I will see if I have better luck with the new telly.
Oo. Lots of interesting stuff on that link Bob. The 2 into 1 remote controlled toslink switch is an idea.
Another thing i find useful is the streaming button in Windows media player. If you enable this it starts a service that turns your PC into media streaming server even when the rest of media player isnt running.
A step that MS forgot to mention in the link is that they had selected “Network” from the bottom of the list on the left in file explorer. Lots of good stuff to be found there if you right click on it including network discovery. This setting enables the network responder service and allows your computer to be seen on a network.
I do have optical out on the TV and optical in on the sound bar but im using the optical connection on the sound bar to link it to my PC. I did it that way because the PC has my only Blue Ray player and also because it lets me play loud music from the PC if I like ?
With my old set up I plugged the headphone output from the telly into the phono jacks on the sound bar but the new TV has no headphone socket !
I may try pairing the telly with the sound bar via Bluetooth later but ARC really should work ?

I joined the buisness systems (AKA Telephone rentals) devision of Mercury in 91 and out main office was in nine elms Vauxhall. It was also the best job I have ever had and stayed that way until my devision was sold to siemens. We operated as a seperate company out of dock st for a year and then we were merged into Siemens old Baily office. Siemens decided to cut the work force and give us all cars. I got W1 and W2 post codes with a car !
