Well that knocks out my favorite idea then. I was hoping you were going to say you had a UEFI system because I have a fix for that ?

I will have a look back through all your posts to see exactly what you have done and have a think.

Yes it does Dave but reset this PC only works if your installation has a recovery partition. That depends on how Windows was installed.

Anyway if you download the latest image and do an upgrade repair you get the latest version of W10 into the bargin ?

Probably a silly question but have you tried using a WiFi analyser on your phone ?

I use WiFi Analyzer on Android but there are plenty of other free ones.

Gives signal strength, band, channel number and actual WiFi speed instead of just connection speed.

Also shows all other networks in your area and wether they are hac, ahem, secure ?

Of course it COULD be TWO problems causing similar results which is always a bugger ?

I really dont think its the WiFi card though.

To try to narrow things down a bit a couple of questions.

Does your PC have a BIOS or is it UEFI (I suspect the latter)

Can you always boot from a DVD now ? If you couldnt in the past but you can now what changed.

Apart from the unfortunate loss of photos incident if you boot from DVD now can you always see the SSD ?

Just trying to pin this down to hardware or software. You have my interest now ?

              https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Parliament

It doesnt really matter anyway as the EU parliament only has about as much power as our house of Lords. See above.

If push comes to shove either the EU council, EU commission or both can TELL them what to do.

Of course being the EU it gets worse once your MEP takes his seat.

                  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_groups_of_the_European_Parliament

As there a are hundreds of political parties in Europe your MEP won’t be representing his own party. First he will be part of a European coalition party and then, like as not, that party will be part of an EU parliamentary coalition party.

To my knowlage no party in history has ever won an overall majority so they sit around in catered meetings all day negotiating cross party voting agreements on every single issue !

Can someone explain to me how PROPORTIONAL representation works in the EU’s head ?

At the last elections the NW England region got to elect 8 MEP’s on a turnout of 1,754,687 votes. This is down from the original 10 MEP’s because of EU expansion. As far as I can tell the number of seats in the EU parliament did not increase so they had to be spread more thinly.

Get this though. In the London region a turnout of 2,200,475 voters got to elect, er, 8 MEP’s !

CCleaner has been installed on all my windows PC’s since about 1998 and It has never done any harm. On the other hand im not sure it does much good on W10.

                          I agree. It does.

It just “Feels” like something else in this case. A PC that fails to boot the first or second time from cold but then starts and runs normally sounds like a PC with a dodgy PSU.

Starting the first time but then failing every restart just seems a bit odd.

                            https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transactional_NTFS

At one time MS were keen to promote Transactional NTFS for mission critical data (see above) but they have off it now. Im not sure if it is even an option in W10.

Windows uses what it calls “Lazy write” which is about the same thing. However it doesn’t use it for system files so its only your important data thats up for grabs ?

Looks like I am going to be offered a vote in the EU elections again.

If UKIP or Nige’s new party field a candidate in my area I will vote for one of them. If not then for the first time ever I WILL NOT VOTE.

Only a massive bloody nose for our ruling elite will make the slightest difference .

Oh yes, the way to test it would be to keep a good copy of grub.cfg from your system somewhere.

Next time the problem happens use a live version of Linux to rename grub.cfg to grub.old and copy the good copy in to replace it.

If it does not help you can always just rename grub.old back to .cfg and delete the copy.

I am no expert on GRUB but it sounds to me like something could be messing with the grub.cfg file.

I say this because there is an obscure option in the Windows BCD file that makes a system behave differently for a reset and a cold start.

That option is only ment to be used by Microsoft during a Windows install but it is there to be messed with.

I don’t know if GRUB or GRUB2 has a similar option but it sounds to me like a program is doing something like it as a one time configuration that fails to finish properly.

                                    Just a thought ?

Having now got to chapter 9 in Bjarne Stroustrup’s  book “Programming Principles and Practice Using C++” I am going to Highly recommend it. The book reads almost like a story with everything in the right order. There is very little referring  back and forth. If something in a previous chapter is used again it is often repeated again in a different context as a memory aid. This is by no means a beginner only book and a programmer  experienced in another language, even plain C, will find it highly useful.

Anyway enough praise, back to the book ?

I agree that Brexit should have been delivered as neither left wing or right wing. Because it isn’t. For a change it is just one issue. Take back control or not. And we voted for tack back.

One more thing. If anyone thinks the youth of today have new ideas have a look on YouTube at any episode of the young ones. Same drivel back in 1982.

Yep, that’s what I think. Boris may be the man for the moment. He COULD stop Tory voters from defecting to some sort of leave party and thus keep the Marxists out. And tell the EU where to go. He COULD and most likely WOULD.
