I looked long and hard to find out what actually controls the frequency of the National Grid and the best I could find is above.
The article is by Drax so there is some bias but it is the only place that points out that green power sources just can’t do frequency regulation.
Load and supply regulation is all that gets mentioned elsewere, and it will help, but not if you have NO frequency regulation capability 🤔
Yep, sh1t happens now and again. I was most interested in the bit that said 60 east coast trains didn’t like the look of the incoming power so shut down, requiring a visit from a technician before they would start again.
Oh, one more thing to note. If you are playing a DVD on a PC then PAL/NTSC only specifies the resolution and refresh rate, its only the region code that will get in your way.
Glad thats working, now try this.

Remember the Win+p key if you do though because you can end up projecting your main screen to “nothing” and pressing Win+p a few times will get it back 😀

And just in case you’r not convinced already, have a look at the above link 😁
Most odd that VLC crashes, its usually the one that works if all else fails 🤔
You may like to try downloading the K-Lite codec pack and then seeing if Windows media player will work.
Did anyone notice I said INTEL Kaby Lake ?
If you happen to have a brand new AMD CPU then don’t even think about it because there aren’t any with SGX as of yet.
Should note that user mode code can’t have this problem because it always runs at the lowest IRQL of passive unless it gets temporrerily boosted to APC by the Kernel.
It IS sort of a memory error but not caused by bad memory. Kernel mode code is not ment to use pageable memory if it is going to run at an IRQL above APC but it is a classic sign of a badly written driver.
The trouble is that if a driver tries to access some pageable memory and it HASN’T been paged out then it will get away with it THAT time.
If the memory has been paged out then Windows will try to raise the CPU IRQL to Dispatch/DPC level so it can call the memory manager but it will find its already at that level so it can’t interrupt the existing process. Error Error Error 😂
As I have still not got my first UHD Blu ray disc yet (I do have a firm delivery date of the 24th now) I have been looking at the DRM issue again.
Looks like a big no go. The only licenced and fully working player software on the market is Power DVD and they had to agree to a BIG demand from the Blu ray disc association to gain the licence.
Apparently the protected process and protected media streams of W10 are not good enough for the BDA and they have insisted the actual decription work is done inside an SGX enclave.
SGX is Software guard eXtensions and it is a new set of CPU instructions. SGX first appeared in Intel Kaby Lake processors in 2017 and the first mother boards that could make it work in 2018. If you don’t have those then Power DVD just won’t LET you play a UHD Blu ray.
I am still waiting for my first Ultra BluRay disc to arrive (Terminator 2 4K) so I have been looking into DRM in the meantime.
To play a 4K disc my whole system need to be HDCP 2.2 certified and below is a list of what needs to be compliant.
4k TV/Monitor with HDMI 2.1 or above.
Certified Graphis card and driver with HDMI 2.1
Certified OS (Windows 10 only really)
Certified player software ( Power DVD 10 OEM edition came with my drive )
Suitable BluRay drive.
I think I have all the above but won’t really know till I get a disc. I am willing to bet it won’t work first time though 😂
Just for information, above is Microsofts explanation of universal windows drivers, including what DCH stands for.
For further information, I hate them and I hope never to be forced to use one on a desktop PC 😁
As Ed says above it IS going to be a driver error 😁
More specifically it is likely to be a driver running an IRQ Level of DPC/Dispatch that has tried to access paged pool memory and found it paged out, that is just not allowed and will cause the error.
Reinstalling Windows is probably easiest but if you fancy a go with Driver Verifier then the link is above.
Hum. Let us know ?
Also looks like I may need an HDMI 2.1 monitor for UHD. Any recomendations ? Got Power DVD Ultra so that SHOULD work. Who knows with drm ?
Good luck D Dan, and I REALLY mean it ?
But being called butt is not good anyware these days ?
Been watching it a bit more. It sneeks up to 4.4 on 2 cores under a stress test ?
An interesting thing (to me anyway ?) about the Westmere core is its power management. My overclocked i7930 ran at 3.9Ghz when idle and 4.1 at turbo, no lower. My i7990X is set for a 4.1 base but it drops to 1.2 at idle and it will boost to 4.3 on just 2 cores if the need arises. Must be good for the leccy bill ?
Speaking of old tech. My 8 year old Blue Ray drive has been increasingly flaky recently so I have ordered a recently reduced Pioneer UHD writer.
It may not actually play UHD Blue Rays though because it says I need a 7th Gen intel CPU for DRM reasons.
We shall see ?
Deep fried locusts are crunchy but the ones I had tasted mostly of batter ?
