Dell always makes it difficult to install anything other than the OS and drivers that their laptops come with but I have never had an outright refusal before. NVIDIA has 32 and 64 bit W10 drivers on its web site and I have at least Vista drivers for everything else but I can’t get that far.
There are YouTube videos showing the 1720 running W10 but none of them show how they did it 🙄
Well it looks like it should, it has a Pentium Duel Core T2370, 3GB RAM and an NVIDIA 8400M GS.
I tried to run the W7 update advisor before I started but it looks like MS has retired its supporting server and the W8/10 update assistant needs at least W7 to run.
The image on the USB stick is fine John, I let it get part way through an insallation on a newer machine before I cancelled it and it showed no sign of having missing drivers. I am going to try installing from a DVD though in case it is the USB storage driver thats missing. As soon as I buy a blank DVD.
The Dell BIOS has got one odd BIOS setting Tippton. There is a flash precache to speed up disk access but disabling that or setting the controller to IDE made no difference.
I have the newest 64 bit image Dave but I am going to try a 32 bit image tomorrow just in case.
My fall back plan is going to be to clone the HDD to the SSD and then try an upgrade to W7 32 bit from there. If that works I will try an upgrade to W10 32 bit. It is a last resort because I will end up with 32 bit Windows on a 64 bit machine but some of the 32 bit Vista drivers for other built in devices may work with it.
+1 Bob. Thats twice we agree in one week !

I just looked up the name of the network discovery service and there are two of them, link-layer topology discovery responder and link-layer topology mapper. Both services must be installed and active on all network adapters you use, you can check under the adapters properties page, while you are there you can check that client for microsoft networks and file and printer sharing are on too.
Just discovered you can now change your network profile from public to private with change connection status under Network and Internet 😁
I just tried this myself and its simpler to get to advanced sharing settings from Network and Internet under settings (The cog icon on the start menu).
While you are at it you should have a look at the ALL networks settings if you want to enable public folder and media sharing.
So you won’t be voting then Ed 😂
I linked that back to front 😁 The link takes you to network type changing with a link at the bottom to enabling network discovery.
https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/change-network-from-public-to-private-in-windows-10.html#way2
The above link shows how to enable network discovery on W10 but it won’t work if your network type is set to public so there is a link at the bottom that shows ways of changing your network type. I recommend the power shell method.
The other problem with Home groups was when people tried to use Advanced sharing settings, the settings would not stick if people were a member of a Home group because the Home group settings over wrote them at every reboot, a sort of settings overlay.
It is the new responder service that was introduced with home groups that causes most problems, I will have to look up its name again, MS discovered that it is insecure so it is disabled on the latest versions of windows, recent Linux versions actually include it so they could appear in home groups !
The permissions and stuff for sharing have not changed much since Windows for workgroups 3.1. What has changed is the discovery process and setup. We can’t use the NETBIOS method any more so we are left with various publisher, responder and discovery services that need to be running to work, UPNP, DNLA, etc.

In case you never heard of it it was the practice of transferring a floppy between computers on foot 😁
Back to sneaker net !
I mean Home Work Group network 🙄
Yes the public and private network stuff is in my link and you would need to know about it with windows 8 and above 😁
Home groups were not really a new way of networking, more of a settings overlay for Work groups with a new network discovery protocol bolted on. PC name resolution is likely to be a pain on any network not running a DNS server because it will have to rely on one of the several discovery methods. The old style “Network neighbourhood” protocol that used NETBIOS will no longer work because SMB 1.0 has finally been deactivated or removed from W10.
Microsoft now recommends that home users share with One Drive but I think thats because they want to look at the type of data you are sharing if not its content as well 🙄
Having said all that, I set up my own Home group network with W10 with minimal effort and it has been working ever since 😀
One more thing. If you open the network folder in explorer and it just says “Network discovery is turned off” then there should also be an option to turn it on. Do that for all the computers you want to appear on your network.
