All the best to both of you Bob!

      +1

It is a B-getting old, but some folk seem to manage the process better than others. You and your SWMBO seem to be two such people.

My own philosophy is ‘use it or lose it’, but whereas a half marathon walk used to be an excuse for a gentle pub crawl, it is now more just a slightly breathy crawl!

Actually Dr Beeching knew exactly what he was doing when he took the job. The government wanted a hatchet man — to ensure that there would be no effective alternative to Earnest Marple’s business interests

        +1 otherwise

This was one of the most odiferous Government moves of that time. You only have to compare our dysfunctional network with that of Germany to get a sense of what we lost through eliminating our regional network. Germany is also an object lesson in the effects of privatisation. It used to be an ‘Always on Time’ service  but privatisation has altered all that.

Bob the improvement that most Northerners want is a faster Liverpool -> Leeds line. The present line chugs along at 40 mph and takes the best part of an hour to get from Manchester to Leeds in conditions that would be illegal for animals.

VOIP was actually built-in to the original BT HomeHub in the very early noughties. It was damn good and enabled us to save a fortune in overseas calls, then some b-accountant at BT saw the impact on BT’s income and chopped it out of all the Homehub upgrades. In the original version it was simple to use and did not need a Voip/Voip connection for many destinations. Instead we could use Voip/POTS via a friendly router or something at the destination. (so long ago I cannot remember the details)

The one change I like about BoMac’s (Mendacious American Clown) new cabinet is that Greylings’s gross incompetence is at last rewarded with the order of the boot.

The £/Euro is a poor measure of confidence as both get hit badly with a hard Brexit. A much better measure is the £/USD.

As you say – oodles of cash for no performance, but trying to wean someone onto a Win10 machine with its better bang for buck maybe a hard sell. However if you can get her to accept that route I would be tempted to tell her to use CorelDraw (Home & Student Edition). It gives >95% of the editing power of Adobe Photoshop at student prices.

With respect to hardware purchases – Apple has its own (pricey) second hand market, but I think I’d give that a miss and use one of the refurb laptop specialists or even Cex (2 year warranty). Screen size is a personal preference thing but most photo editors like big screens (more cash!)

Video editing is also handled fairly directly on PCs and there are numerous options that are cheaper than Apple’s. With a PC it is also easy to install a Linux VM and use free software such as Kdenlive. Even Gimp can (sort-of) be used as a free photo editor. I personally find it underpowered but others make do with it and it is after all FREE! Dan can probably better advise on the use of Blender in Linux (or Windows) for photo and video compositing. Imo that is the future in that it has more facilities and opportunities than even Photoshop.

It would seem that early adopters have inherited some moderately carp firmware and an outstanding ‘todo’ list e.g No USB Boot or Ethernet boot – imo an appalling regression. In addition to this it seems the USB3 sata connection is also very flakey, and some controllers such as the Sabrent are not supported. There is more info on this problem here.

I would have been a much happier customer if they had released it when complete and ready instead of trying to hit some artificial deadline.

Ditto the holiday Dave, but mine was in the Crab, Mussels and Hake land of West Cornwall. Cider was good too, but walking 20k/day left me aching all over and very thirsty so little weight was lost!

I’m not sure which river has the greatest bore, but China has one that tops 8 metres high (compared with about 8 feet for the Severn).

Btw Dave, as young reprobates we would have loved to have gone in the Drum and Monkey but unfortunately the Geology teacher kept a close watch on us having lost one (naughty) kid who did a disappearing act in the Gough caves in Cheddar.

The bore isn’t much to look at until you get east of Lydney, but as the river narrows the bore increases in height and people can surf on it.

Labour went to sleep when the guidelines for the Boundary Commission were set in 2013. Labour have no-one to blame but themselves as there were public consultations iirc.

There are some areas of North Somerset where I used to fish where they’ve realised the artificial barriers aren’t the answer and they’re letting the sea encroach again to create salt marshes etc.

Probably because they have realised that there is more money in elvers than farming. (£5 for 20g if you can find them!)

Your Word, and just one unqualified sentence:

“I reject your arguments about there being no greater democracy in the UK than the EU.  ”

In any case we do not have a democracy and in recent years not even a democratically elected PM. What we have is an elected or appointed dictatorship that can and does ignore the will of the people and parliament. Even when the PM is elected there are frequent occasions when that is only a minority of voters when all votes are counted.

Where did I say we were more democratic than the EU – you put words in my mouth. I in fact stated that we do NOT have true democracy in this country.

When we joined the EU we joined a club, as club members we participated in the constitution and in a political manner our elected representatives were supposedly there to represent our interests and behave politically by influencing the MEPS from the other member states. Instead people like Farage just acted in a thoroughly objectionable manner and generated zero good will and got zero cooperation.

I can on my own no more kick out our Government than the UK can on its own kick out the Commission. All I can do is to try and influence my MP. Politics is the art of the possible, not the impractical.

If they just want ‘old’ tell your Yank friends to go to the Mithrean Temple near London Wall. link

Of course there is The Tower, Crown Jewels etc dating from a thousand or so years later. Unlike the US, the whole of the UK is littered with old stuff (and old mentalities!). As Yanks they may even be interested in Jeremy Bentham the philosopher who laid the foundations for the US constitution. He was however a bit of an ego centric as he had himself stuffed and put on display at my old college. The wiki says he is on public display, but I’m not so sure of that as the louts at Imperial kept stealing his head!

They can also go to the British Museum where there is a load of old stuff we looted from around the world. Imo it is not as good as the Berlin equivalent but still pretty good.

London has lots of good museums, but imo one that should not be overlooked is the Welcome Collection.  They often have presentations that are of interest to teenagers – one recent one was on the Psychology of Magic (misdirection, expecting to see things which are not there, optical illusions etc.)

The more distant is removed the seat of power the less there is democracy.

OK so you accept that you are promulgating a falsehood when you wrongly state that the EU Commission cannot be removed.

If you want to bang on about democracy then examine why it is a completely busted flush in the UK.

‘First pass the post’ results in my views never being represented. My views are worthless in my constituency where any braying idiot with a public school accent is certain to be elected. Even were I to have my views represented they would soon get overturned if the Newspaper/Media clique ganged up against it. Much as I dislike Trump, he was right to point out the malign influence of the media and their ability to overturn the will of the people in the style of “It was the Sun wot did it!”.
