I really do not understand M$’s rationale for moving from the ‘simple’ Windows 7 sharing set up to something that does ‘share’ anywhere near as easily. I find at times that I tear my hair out as Win10 does not detect all the Windows machines on my network!
It is hard for me to see why a pseudo-corporate level security is required for a SOHo set-up.
Re GPS = maybe so, but if the 5 pence cockpit heating system fails and everything ices over the it ain’t much use!
Steve, if you read the blurb in the link then you will get an inkling of the issues they face. I would guess that the old issues of cost and weight feature heavily in the ledger books of the manufacturers, suppliers.
Iirc even a non-sparking hammer costs a fortune when done through Government procurement compared with the price that you or I would pay – that of course is the pass-through of the bureaucratic overhead of being able to track everything throughout its life, and the old issues of thrust/weight ratios.
In turn the MoD/DoD mandarins cut back on expense (i.e. stores and maintenance). The bottom line is that the planes are only kept in the air by string and chewing gum, with for example the result that 75% of our Lightening planes are o/c as far as fighting anything real is concerned.
I’m sure Steve still remembers the days of squaddies buying their own kit rather than use the cheap rubbish doled out by the MoD! I suspect that pilots have similar issues of their own – hence Garmin watches.
My good wishes to Richard and his family.
The Blame Game cuts two ways, and although people will get increasingly frustrated it depends who they see at fault. Will it be someone rushing to try and please his rich backers who are betting against the UK, or Opposition parties who say they accept a Brexit but it must be on the right terms?
As job losses due to Brexit mount I think the blame will start to move around in favour of the Opposition. Time will tell, and whoever has the most time will win.
The threat of a Hard Brexit, and a lack of trust in Johnson keeps the oppositions united.
The DUP position is once again the important one as if Arlene Foster keeps her threat then she can stop Duplicitous Johnson getting a new election Bill through Parliament. (I’m not even sure of the legality of this move without rescinding the Fixed Term Act). If the old saying about a woman scorned holds true then Johnson hasn’t got a hope of an early election. Without taking a Hard Brexit off the table, few MPs will go against their whips but some Conservative rebels may.
His only hope is to say he has no confidence in his Government but I think that the arithmetic could fail on this as well it just needs a few fall guys to support while the rest abstain. He cannot even just suspend the Brexit Bill as once again he breaks his word and lets down the Brexiteers, while putting the whole country in limbo probably until the end of January.
Because few have complete trust in his word, Machiavellian duplicitous Johnson has made a complete mess of it!
You could not make it up. How could it come to this, that we now, are gonna have to have a general election. Tapped. I do actually find it funny.
No General Election in the foreseeable future. Corbyn has set out his stall:
“Labour has made it clear it wants to see a customs union built into the Brexit deal and, on the subject of a general election, would support a poll “when the risk of a no-deal crash-out” is off the table. ”
As the Duplicitous One has stated he could hold the threat of No-Deal right up to the end of the Transition Period, this Parliament could well go its full term. Arlene Foster in turn has threatened to use such time to frustrate Johnson in revenge for his double-dealing over putting a border in the Irish Sea. It could be an interesting time between now and 5 May 2022!
Imo the less able Parliament is able to make new laws or support dodgy US invasions, the better!
My earlier response was based (I thought) on you upgrading an old Windows installation to Win10 onto a new SSD and keeping software. If instead you are looking at a clean Win10 install onto a newish laptop then this link may be more helpful as it discusses some physical gotchas on very new laptops.
This link is also useful as it reminds you that Win10 can have a will of its own in choosing which disk/partitions it uses!
However if the laptop has an existing uefi/gpt setup then to save tears please ensure that you first make a usb boot stick. Tbh I do not know a way of fiddling with a secure boot laptop without use of such a stick short of complete removal of the existing drive, but maybe Dave does.
[edit] I’m trying to remember the background but I think at one time Dave talked about using Rufus to make a Windows bootable uefi/gpt install stick.
Speeking of “Off with his head” what’s happening with the scotish court action against Borris ? He more or less sent the letter I dictated for hin earlier and the EU have accepted it, they seem set to respond with the letter I dictated for them too. It don’t look like we are going to be able to lock Borris up in the clock tower so why hasn’t the case been dropped ?
IIrc the Scottish Court stated they would hold off making a decision until they saw if the EU accepted the non-letter from Johnson. As the general noises seem to be that the period requested will be granted then Johnson is off the hook – leastways until the MET police watchdogs make their long overdue report into the allegations of misconduct in public office while being the P&CC for the Met.
I think that your uuid numbers may be the issue, but rather than risk all do try autofs.
You can either go the toy route and click on the drive when you want it, or with a little more care get autofs to detect the drive on boot in a manner that is better than fstab. link
Unfortunately as you will see this is not completely a cut and paste method, as some of the steps need different labels to suit your system. With care it should be less disaster prone than fstab.
Unfortunately Screaming Lord Sutch – 3rd Earl of Harrow has been elevated to a far higher plane (June 1999) so we will need to seek other trustworthy worthies.
If Labour had Andy Burnham as leader I would certainly vote for them, as he has done wonders in the ways he has fought for improvements in Manchester, and would be infinitely more trustworthy than Johnson (labelled as a filthy piece of toerag by one of his constituents!).
but we have not reacted with Police violence of the kind seen in Catalonia, have we?
I’m not sure that the Miners would agree with that, and neither would the newspaper seller who was killed, or those killed in custody. I would however agree that there have been less such incidents in recent years, though the police cavalry involved in student kettling in 2010 came close. link.
Maybe I’m wrong but I do not think the UK Parliament ever discussed the student kettling with any degree of sympathy! wiki
I’m not getting at the UK police as they are much better at crowd control than their Continental equivalents. I certainly would not want to be anywhere near a group of French CRS riot police for example. Evidence shows that where UK police actions have been undesirable in retrospect, that often they were acting under direct Home Office or Prime Minister orders (Miners Strike and Kettling).
I think you made Dave’s point in that our MEPs never discussed the internal affairs of other EU states and neither did they discuss ours. Internal affairs other than disaster response are not within the remit of the EU Parliament, and that is why EU regulations only set out minimum standards and allow member states to tighten them up as our Parliament seemed to do without fail!
With respect to an extension, the EU will agree because they would not want any blame for the disaster that would befall the UK in the event of a Hard Brexit. The only question is duration, but my guess is that they will give exactly what we asked as any other response looks like the duplicitous gamesmanship that Johnson plays.
I think that many people who voted remain are resigned to the fact that the rest of the EU no longer want us. That is a dangerous position to be in as we need a full free trade deal with the EU if we are not to throw tens of thousands out of work – think car makers for a start.
The opposition including the DUP are united against a Hard Brexit and the scumbags who bankrolled Boris to bet heavily against the UK will lose.
Start digging your ditch Boris – or was this just another Bulldozer lie and broken promise?
He has not got a hope of a General Election until he removes the ticking gun of a Hard Brexit at the end of the Transition Period.
The good news is that through his games and duplicity he has just shafted the Brexit backers who have shorted the Pound and companies affected by a Hard Brexit. I just hope Rees Mogg is one of them!
Rather than risk your system – go the ‘toy’ route and use autofs (in synaptic I’m sure).
Thinking about it this Easus link may be more appropriate. Whichever you do, it is important with EUFI/GPT setups to make a USB Boot disk. If you do not, things can get quite difficult.
I cannot talk for Microdream but sometimes (both new & refurb) laptops come with a bunch of carp that no-one would want. A Microsoft fresh install would be my recommendation. However please note that this purges ALL included software, so take a look to see if there is anything you want to keep before doing this nuclear option.
I’m not sure I understand your comment about your laptop barfing at swapping out the hdd for a ssd. I assume it is a uefi issue, if so take a look at this Easus article to see if it helps.
As a matter of interest if it is not Windows or Linux that stops you changing the boot drive, but instead it is uefi then you should note that all newer laptops come with both it and gpt as the basic installation which you will not easily change without using something like the Easus method.
There are ways of doing this from safe mode, but I think I would rather you use the Live method if you can as the possibility of totally stuffing your system could not be ruled out.
I have to guess what your problem is. Did it go t-up after messing with fstab and rebooting? If so, use a Live CD/USB. Wait until you get the Live Desktop then dive into your main drive. Then to be safe from vim/nano errors use the normal Ubuntu graphical text editor to look inside fstab and undo the things you did wrong.
I suspect that you have somehow put a totally fictitious uuid for your external drive and it is hunting around for a non-existant item!
A ‘good’ fstab looks something like the following:
# <device file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
UUID=ad662d33-6934-459c-a128-bdf0393e0f44 / ext4 defaults 1 1UUID=30ebb8eb-8f22-460c-b8dd-59140274829d /home ext4 defaults 1 1
UUID=7014f66f-6cdf-4fe1-83da-9cab7b6fab1a swap swap defaults 0 0
where the uuid are the specific uuids for your hardware.
If you made a copy of fstab before playing with it, rename and use that instead!
[edit] once you have zapped out your external drive from fstab, you could try autofs for a fairly foolproof mount, but I do not think it will automount on boot you will have to select the drive to get it going.
+1 for refurbished and bang for the buck. Laptops suffer a huge depreciation in the first year and in these days of company failures are frequently sold off by the receivers. They also feature quite a lot in Police sales. However I would not suggest taking the risk of buying from such a place for someone else. Refurbished is a safer bet, and normally come with a one year guarantee. Cex is also worth a look as it gives a longer two year guarantee.
