I have now nearly completed the first world, or ‘chapter’. My views at this early stage are very positive. The storyline puts quite a lot of emphasis on the moral compass of the player, and presents a number of moral and logical challenges. Unusually it also mixes in an element of ‘Management’, not so much in the game mechanics (which are good), but management in terms of inter-personal skills with your companion(s). It will be interesting to see how that develops.

In a sentence it mixes together, fighting, crafting, and tactics with a smidgeon of inter-personal skills. At this early stage of the game, strategy is pretty much non-existent if you run with the story line. However I guess it may allow a player to ignore this at some point and develop a world apart. If so, some of the monsters present a horrendous challenge to even the most skilled game player – not only are they tough, with hard to counter abilities, they also have a good AI fighting/flocking/retreating algorithm that adapts their responses to your tactics.

I’m still not a fan of the graphics which are in the style of a console-based ‘No Man’s Sky’, but the style does not get in the way of game play and certainly looks other worldly. That is of course just my personal view which has not been reflected afaik in other reviews. The graphical elements of buildings, furniture, human detritus, terrain, vegetation etc are all detailed, original and very well developed.

Incidentally I have had no other crashes and no reason, so far, to dislike any antics from the Epyx Store.

Bob, funnily enough I understand those torn loyalties. We lived in New Zealand for a number of years, and my elder son went to Wellington High School and played in various year groups for his school. Not only did he make a lot of good friends he was coached during this time by All Black players (They do this to help raise their next generation of players, and rotate through all the player positions over the winter terms). As a result he was completely torn during the England game and would not cheer for either.

Incidentally his training made me understand why this nation of 3 million or so is so darned good at sport. Not only was he coached by the best, but every day during the school year he and the other team members used to have to run up and down a 400 foot high steep hill that backs onto Wellington harbour They finished off with a hard session of weight training. He put on so much heavy muscle mass that in UK terms he would have been ranked as obese for his age!

At long last the Pi4 has added some of the missing elements of the boot code. It now supports network boot and power via the USB-C port. This link gives most of the necessary information, but I’m afraid it is still a useless  box gathering dust in my house without the Boot from USB change.

Recompiling the Linux kernel used to be the passage of fire from being a noob to not having to go through the scourge of RTFM.

My one criticism of Linux used to be that many of the people responding in forums just took delight in torturing noobs by not responding with anything helpful or with something that was positively dangerous to your setup.

I’m happy to say that crowd of malcontents have in the main moved from Linux to Stackoverflow’s Python moderators who now respond unhelpfully to 99% of noob questions with ‘That question has been answered before (with no link of course!)’, or ‘Show me some code before I deign to answer’.

I’ve not managed to crash the game since the initial days, I suspect that Epyx was upgrading either the game or the Store/Launcher.

I’m taking it slowly at the moment by taking the time to discover the game mechanics i.e which weapon to use/when, and how to mod/repair it. Also how to influence companion behaviour. The lack of a manual is holding me back somewhat and I’m not sure why the game does not have one..

It looks like nVidia threw all the support for this to the laptop maker (Dell) and Dell does not support it even being upgraded to XP!  You could try the nVidia site for obsolete equipment – link

However my hopes would not be great as apparently Dell made it difficult to install anything but their drivers.

If you want to make the machine capable of secure web connection, my advice would be to try Zorin OS 12.4 Lite

I give up with friends like this who needs enemies?

Loud-mouth Trump has just interfered in Britain’s election process. I hesitate to say who will get the most mileage from his interference as although his condemnation of Corbyn was obvious, he also said that it was possible that the terms of “Duplicitous Johnson’s” Brexit deal could make any future trade deal with the US impossible! Caution unreliable content – Daily Express Link 😋

I’ll give Trump his due he was at least even-handed in giving ammunition to both main parties.

As said before, I would now take positive steps to avoid flying Boeing, but that sort of action does not cover every eventuality.

I can still recollect a China Airlines flight (on an Airbus) from Beijing to Xiamen (South East China). My boss and I were ensconced in the front row in first class (I was his bag carrier/local expert), and we had just been served lunch. We were happily sitting back enjoying it, when the pilot’s cabin door opened and all four flight crew trooped out (propping open the door with a shoe), sat down and started on their lunch as well. As I was well versed in the somewhat frightening habits of Chinese aircrew I was relatively relaxed. Not so my boss who lost a lot of face by yelling and screaming – “Who’s flying the frigging plane?!”

Scratch the Max it looks like the whole damned Boeing Aircraft range has been infested by Bean Counters. Quantas have just discovered cracks in their relatively young fleet. Link

I’m really glad I’m no longer a jet-setter I would have driven our travel dept mad getting them to ensure that I was not on any sort of Boeing!

Initial reactions are that the Epic Store is not as slick as that of Steam, and leaves you a bit up in the air having purchased a game as to where it is! However, that is just a personal impression having bought a pre-release game, but I expected a bit more positivity.

The Outer Worlds has a strong story line and ‘pretty’ graphics. I’m personally not a fan of using ‘cartooning’ (a 3D tech term for edge highlighting) as I think it gives a slightly HDR unnatural appearance, but I guess it makes it easier for porting to the lower graphics realms of consoles. Game play mechanics are good and what you would expect from these seasoned developers. On the down-side like all newly released games it is prone to crashes, so save often! At this early state of play (and mainly due to the crashes) I’d give it 80%.

Two of them are relatively honest (for politicians), and I have not yet caught Corbyn in a lie. If anything he is too damned honest to be a political leader.

Both sides manifestos will be unpalatable I expect, so I will probably be voting tactically on Brexit. Probably not much point in our constituency

+1, but I certainly will not vote for a party with a lying scumbag as leader.

What has changed is the discovery process and setup. We can’t use the NETBIOS method any more

Is it this that caused M$ to remove the HomeGroup? If not somehow the HomeGroup system was a lot better at identifying Windows 10 machines – even my Linux boxes are now detected and connect better than the Windows ones!

The Duplicious One has managed to jump the first hurdle in a Brexit deal that will according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) COST us £70Bn over the next ten years.

I’m sure these sorts of figures will play a small role in the forthcoming election but such figures are meaningless to most voters. It is Johnson’s personal mendacity and broken promises that could harm his own chances of holding his existing Parliamentary seat. I’m certain that he will be reminded many times about ‘lieing’ in front of the Heathrow bulldozers, and maybe the 10000 voters at Brunel University will use their postal ballots to swing his 5000 majority the other way. However given the gutless self preservation he has demonstrated on previous occasions I’m sure we will hear that he has pinched a safer seat. Whether through this he will manage to evade all his character baggage in the process is another story.

Hard to say what the issue is, but some of the older programs do indeed require to be ‘run as admin’ especially those that use a third-party program to manage DRM/files/data (often invisible at user level). It only adds an irritating step, but right-click on the program and select run-as Admin.

A minority will need to be run in compatibility mode. Again right-click to select.

A very small number have other incompatibilities and need to be run in a vm such as virtualbox or vmware player. That latter is harder to setup unless you have a spare Win7 install disk.

A diminishing number have totally incompatible DRM and will not even run in a vm. If they are really old games try Gog.com as they may have a low-cost DRM-free version, that may also be a solution for those games that otherwise need to run in a vm. The normal reason for games not running is poxit DRM incompatibilities. Bioware was one such company and their intrusive/buggy DRM caused me to boycott anything made by them – Mass Effect, Dragon Age etc..
