Sysinternals is a great package, but it helps to use one of the many tutorials such as the one on using Process Explorer to find malware: link

It was Pi=Mint that gave me the problems, which were so bad, I gave up and reverted to Pi-OS. Although that too has tiny font it is just about visible. Once up I can customize the system fonts and all is then on the right track except a tiny camouflaged Mouse pointer which still isn’t quite sorted.

I agree there are ways around it, but Linux Mint uses its artyfarty designs during installation where it is difficult to find any ways around the problem except guesswork. It is also compounded by my 4K screen as this results in really tiny illegible Mint installation instructions as the Web Design FArt School the designer attended did not teach them how to make dialog boxes that scale with resolution.

I’m afraid the modern age has degenerated into style over substance. Never mind if it doesn’t work or falls apart, just so long as it looks good!

Thanks for the video link. It gave me a much better understanding of the problem. I would guess that high bandwidth comes with associated RF noise which must give the potential for cross talk/loops and all sorts of nasties. I think I’ll steer clear of riser cables!

Search on line for pci-ex1 pinout and you will get links such as this.

Tbh I’m not certain this link is what you are seeking, but the Google-foo magic word is PINOUT. As you can see from the example there are a few apparent duplicate GND pins, but there is a fair chance that the internal card layout may need them to ensure that you do not get funny ground loops. I’d be inclined to say that the safest option is to connect the ribbon to all the pins.

For simple connectors such as usb cables you can often get away with doing what you said, but a pci-e board is normally not just something in which you only need to connect pwr and gnd.

The astrophysicists that I’ve met are on a different plane of one-track ‘Star Trek’ existence. Getting practical stuff out of such people would be an impossible task.

I cannot fault your logic, but the only problem is finding a ‘safe’ second-hand source.  The thought of buying from China or Russia is fraught with potential issues, never mind the problems if the card was sent in a broken state! I guess a US or Dutch source is better but still carries a risk. Good luck with your strategy.

I’ve got a much cheaper RX3080. Obviously only half as good as the 6600XT, but good enough for me at present and only half the electricity usage!.

To make it a bit more interesting, you could keep a list of all the promises, then see how many the ‘Winner’ keeps or breaks before the 2024 General Election. BoJo pretty much broke all his Brexit promises!

Agreed again, but my main reason for disliking Sunak is that his wife has more assets than the Queen, Without doubt he is the wealthiest Conservative. Not only is he completely out of touch with the  concerns of the electorate, I just cannot see him taking tax decisions that would impinge on his wealth, and I’m afraid that as a country that has got in the deep poo, it is necessary to share the pain, not smack the ones who have got nothing. (e.g. fuels duty and National Insurance).

I’m sorry but I have no trust in either Sunak or Truss. None of them are proposing to INVEST in innovation, and completely reject selling off our few remaining technology crown jewels. Brexit nearly killed the City of London, and we now need to build something other than the Financial Sector for the future. R&D plus Entrepreneurial risk taking should be the way forward. We should outlaw outsourcing to India etc as this just exports our technology and intellectual property. (Sunak would never agree to this!)

IMO the days of Bitcoin and Bitcoin mining are over. It has turned into a Ponzi game with very few tangible assets supporting the deemed value. It was only ever of real use to those wanting to move their money without letting Authorities know it existed. Now that Governments have cottoned on to ways of tracking such funds, even the criminals are cautious in using Bitcoins.

A corporate Treasurer once explained to me that there is no such thing as money, just a belief that the IOU you have will easily be passed on to someone else in exchange for something of use. Inflation happens when people stop believing that the IOU will be honored for that value. Sterling has lost about half its value under the innovation averse stewardship of Conservative Chancellors of the Richi Sunak ilk.

I agree, the price of energy will become a massive consideration for many, though here in the UK it isn’t the underlying energy cost that hurts but the 10% Green levy, 40% connection charge and of course the Government’s 20% VAT on top!

Funnily enough Quora has a current thread on Singapore’s exit from Malaysia.

                            https://www.quora.com/Why-did-Singapore-and-Malaysia-split-up-Could-they-come-back-together

It is noticeable that the Malay respondents do not refer to the huge difference in corruption between Malaysia and Singapore. Corrupt officials are still common-place in Malaysia, but non-existant in Singapore. Neither did the Malay respondents refer to their Bumi-first policies, whether written or unwritten. (Bumi==native Muslim Malay). This was always a source of contention for my old company when two contenders were up for a promotion. If one was Bumi then HE always got preference, and heaven help you if the non-Bumi was also female but miles better!

Monday’s weather was lovely, but yesterday was brutal – not for the temperatures but the damned humidity. Yesterday was so hot it brought down Google cloud! Today is back to pleasantly warm.

The TV is full of doom and gloom about the temperatures, but I remember the gloriously long hot sunny summers of 1955 and 1975. They were very nearly the same temperature, but went on for weeks rather than just a couple of days.

If this does become a regular occurrence and lasts as long as it did in years past then I can see a great demand to install window shutters and attic fans. The latter are the cheapest form of bedroom air-con I’ve met, and consists of a 24inch fan installed in the gable end of the house sucking the 50-60C air from the loft space and cooling the bedroom ceilings as well as creating a through draft through  the loft trap and the rest of the house.

I lived in Singapore for many years, and have a great admiration for their technology-led Government.  That said – ‘green’ concerns are only given priority if they are in tune with overall Government strategy and priorities.

Singapore’s history is an important factor in the priorities set by its Government. Singapore’s population are mainly ethnic Chinese. In the 1960s when Singapore split from Malaysia, religious and ethnic genocide against the Chinese was rife in South-East Asia. Above all, Singapore had to potentially defend itself against the much larger (Muslim) populations of Malaysia and Indonesia. This concern shaped much of Singapore’s infrastructure in mainly hidden ways (e.g.Motorways that are easily converted to military runways etc). Singapore has a well-armed military with an Israeli-type strategy of fighting any battles on aggressors territories.

However they have one recognised strategic vulnerability – all of their high-cost potable water came from Malaysia. This led to very efficient water recycling in Singapore but still left a deficit. I suspect that the need to fill this gap to become self-sufficient in water supplies is driving their desalination project rather than environmental concerns. Sticking solar panels on water-ways is a tried and tested option. Not only does it save land space (a critical resource in Singapore) it also cuts down water losses.

To be honest I do not know how good it is, however it does NOT automatically  eliminate loss of Internet when the BT Halo system gets confused and needs a reboot.

Good luck with the new job.

I have a neighbour whose company also has nearly everyone working from home, and has been doing so for quite a long time. Chatting with him, the only major downsides appear to be for new hires – it is harder for them to find their way around and much harder to tune in to company politics and hot buttons.

He felt that there is a small loss of teamwork due to an emphasis on individual performance. He equated it with Manchester United – great individual players but a team that potentially under-performs. They are now attempting to avoid some of these issues by regular offsite meetings where everyone talks about their projects and gets feed-back from the rest of the group. It is often an overnight Holiday Inn  do as this allows informal after-work bar and socializing time.

Our railway lines WILL sag and buckle this week as Network Rail do not believe that British Summers are getting any warmer!

Our rail network is designed for a maximum Summer temperature of 27C even though they could easily be adjusted to French or German temperatures.

Having ‘bad-mouthed’ Mint’s kernel policy, there is an easy way to install the release version of Mint Vanessa and make sure that the kernel remains updated.

Follow the steps given here to use Mint’s update manager to perform the task.

                                            link

I have yet to have any kernel update in Mint unduly effect its operation. In general kernel updates never get released into the repository without going through rigorous checks in Debian Spike, and Ubuntu. On the other hand Linux exploits are becoming much more common and sophisticated.
