DoH rejected NHS advice to stockpile PPE for use in flu pandemics as too costly. Does anyone else think that DoH staff should now be reassigned to front-line bodybag duties?
Emojis seem to have disappeared. (~)
BoJo has covid-19!
I just wish it had been Dominic Cummings that was getting a taste of his cull strategy.
If you are uncertain whether our Government has made a good job so far of handling the covid-19 outbreak, compare us with South Korea etc., and also check out the OECD hospital beds/1,000 people for these countries.
Once you have done that draw your own conclusions. I know what mine are! {~}
(sorry no emojis for sick as a pig)
Nice data presentation.
The new case history shows that we are doubling the numbers of new infections at slightly less than every three days. Tracking the new infections/day is useful as when that rate drops we can see that things are starting to get better. In the same manner dividing today’s new deaths by new cases offset by about a week will show if the NHS has reached overload.
Looks like others are running with the on-line pub idea.
It looks like Dominic Cummings has sneakily been trying to place ‘tainted science’ to justify his mass cull strategy.
Set yourself a routine, just mooching around is a recipe for depression.
If you haven’t received the dreaded confined to your house order, go for a daily walk of an hour or so. Even in a town it is normally possible to choose times and places that are relatively free of other people. Most around this area are good at crossing over the road to minimise contact.
If you cannot go out then Skype or Apple’s FaceTime are good ways of at least having some social contact — arrange a virtual booze-up with your mates. (Offlicences are deemed essential business!). Your friends are probably feeling much the same as you. Contact your local pub landlord, maybe he would be willing to host a virtual booze-up and deliver beer in jugs! (for a delivery fee of course). He may even thank you for the idea.
We have an extra six months which should see us through one lock down, then book a quick MOT before the next lock down!
There is no escape, Prince Charles has caught it. That will teach him to do all this handshaking malarky!
I can also imagine the Queen giving BoJo a earful for his risky strategy in allowing Cheltenham Races to take place. “First you lied to me. and now you have infected the heir to the Throne. You are obviously a secret Republican!”
MOT test centres. Many are part and parcel of car showrooms which the Government has shuttered. Check if your MOT is due to expire in the next three months and see if you have any other options.
Just one of the little details that HMG overlooked. I suspect that there are a lot of others that have also been forgotten.
Lee tried to email him to no effect. My guess is that he has been co-opted onto a Government Medical Procurement body and his lips have been zippered by HMG.
I hope so, at least he has been studying the whole saga in some detail for a long time and has a pretty fair idea of what would be required and the timescale. I’d have a lot more faith in his abilities than someone who has just moved across from Ag & Fish. (The Ministries have crazy job rotations for their high-flyers which results in the Private Secretaries being jacks of all trades and masters of zero).
Dominic Cummings said the civil service lacked people with “deep expertise in specific fields”.
A link to the French trial of chloroquine phosphate is here.
Whether it goes on into October totally depends how Bojo decides to play it. The Cummings solution with around 350,000 early deaths plays out within three months. With Trump edging that way, who knows what BoJo will do.
If Bojo plays the ICU numbers game, then he will let us off the hook in July and maybe August/September then back into lock down again. However if as is likely chloroquine phosphate reduces ICU requirements significantly he may decide to just let the virus rip from July onwards. If he does go the first route, you had better count on three weeks quarantine on your return as he would not want to let loose a new wave of infection during lock-down.
Its anyone’s guess what should be done as without all the testing kits that other countries have we are shooting blindly, and crippled by the low hospital beds&ICU/population numbers that VFM referenced some while ago. Thanks to years of misrule and NHS cash squeezes we rank in the bottom ten percent below even Turkey. link
That is really tough. I hope that things now start going in the right direction, rather than down the Tonypandy.
I’ll give incompetent Boris his due, he has delegated all the decision making to his scientific advisors. I’m less certain about that lot as they apparently initially supported Dominic Cumming’s ‘cull’ strategy, and ignored the work that Imperial College had done. As a result we are seven weeks behind where we could have been on protective clothing for medics and carers, and the same on test kits and ICU equipment. They have completely failed to learn the lessons from Korea and Singapore. Testing, tracking and enforced quarantine are the key elements. I’ll believe they are starting to learn their lessons when they ask everyone to install a *pandemic tracker on their phone.
*App uses Bluetooth to interrogate nearby phones and stores phone id+date. If phone user then gets covid-19 it is easy to track down and test all contacts, also easy to find out where phone user picked up the virus. OK it does not cover the issue of dirty door handles etc but that could be handled by separate procedures
No 10 denies claim Dominic Cummings argued to ‘let old people die’
The Sunday Times article certainly rings true as he appears to have opinions that are right of Attilla the Hun, and doing so would have generally positive economics.
Sorry, slightly too late, I am now banged up by Boris for the next twelve weeks, so cannot do a sales pitch with my butcher or greengrocer.
Chloroquine Phosphate is now a WHO licensed trial in which the UK is participating. God the NIH and racism of the medical profession makes me sick. Three months of killing people just to satisfy their professional egos, and repeat work already done in Asia.
Chloroquine phosphate is a very safe generic drug, and cheap as chips – a one week course could be given out to anyone who fails the 10 sec breath holding test. This would cost £5 at the very most and have the very real prospect of saving thousands of lives, and offload hospitals and critical care facilities. It wouldn’t even matter very much if this was a ‘false’ indication of covid-19 and the drug was taken by error as all the medical downsides (mainly to eyesight and liver) only come with protracted use.
The ones who have got on top of it (other than China’s draconian measures) are South Korea and Singapore. In both cases they tested anyone who had the slightest signs of the disease by investing heavily in testing kits. If anyone was found to have it they were immediately quarantined for at least 14 days (forcibly if necessary), and interrogated to find all their contacts, who in turn would also be tested and quarantined for 14 days irrespective of test results.
These two countries have also been using the ‘wonder drug’ chloroquine phosphate since the end of February – soon after the Chinese Center for Disease Control recommended its use. Our hospitals are not allowed to use it as it isn’t licensed for covid-19 treatment despite being amongst the safer drugs.
Our idiot Government ignored all the evidence, and hoped for the best and planned for the best by not spending anything on preparation. They then BS’d about ‘new’ scientific evidence having ignored Imperial College London for seven weeks. One can only hope that those who got us into this mess suffer a taste of what they have dished out to the population.
