Due to the Beeb censoring someone from WHO discussing why face-masks should be worn, they flipped to a Welsh discussion of covid-19 in Wales. Someone asked about the very high numbers for the Aneurin Bevin Health District, and the remark was made that most of the cases were in East Gwent in close proximity to England. i.e. The Wye Valley, the rich Bristol commuter strip.  With that info I revert to my original comment about many hot spots being associated with wealth!

Just in case anyone thinks that chloroquine kills the Covid-19 virus – it probably does not except at life threatening doses. It probably acts in the same manner as it does with SARS it helps stop the virus replicating and buys time for the body to fight the virus.

Wear a mask if you are going to be within *6 metres of anyone outside your family group. (*distance a sneeze can travel)

As the original 1918 advice states ANY mask is better than none, but obviously you need to treat it as a contaminated object when you get home, spray it with IPA/Dettol/Antibacterial fluid then wash any simple cloth masks. (AB spray is OK as it has a detergent action). OK it will not be as effective as an N100 mask, but it will reduce the infection odds.

Many people are now starting to follow this advice and mask wearing is now becoming quite common.

The major red zones seem to equate to areas of wealth where people took overseas holidays during February, and not, as I would have thought, around the major airports.

The Government has the detailed location data, why can’t they make it available as it is in the better prepared countries such as South Korea and Singapore?

At last Governments are starting to acknowledge that Covid-19 is spread asymptomatically and is both contagious (hence wash hands) AND infectious (aerosols from sneezing). The US Center for Disease control now recommends that everyone use face masks (if you can get them!). I guess our Government will not release this info until they manage to get all the health and emergency workers, police etc fully kitted out.

“… Those concerns were reflected on Tuesday by Robert Redfield, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who said in a rare interview that as a many as one in four cases have no symptoms.

As a result, the CDC was now “aggressively reviewing” its recommendations on use of face masks, potentially extending their use based on the assumption that more people in “high transmission zones” were already infected but without symptoms.

(For the UK read London, Birmingham and north Hampshire as high transmission zones – I’m not sure which part of Hertfordshire is in this red zone)

The US have at last also approved the BoJo wonder drug – chloroquine. I wonder when our NHS will follow.

A bit of perspective on Covid-19 deaths. The linked Government spreadsheet gives total deaths of all causes each week and the corresponding covid-19 numbers.

I agree, and that is why it would have been better to have been tacked on to the Emergency Powers – I’m sorry to say, but our Government (of all political shades) is basically untrustworthy when it comes to basic freedoms.. Every year the politicians nibble away at our rights. In my youth I would not have been troubled by feral pigeons or seagulls on my roof, the airgun would have seen to that!

If VFM ever lurks here, he may be interested in this blog of a New York MD successfully treating his Covid-19 patients with a cocktail of hydroxychloroquine, zinc sulphate plus Z-pak. His stats show it all, of his 699 patients treated, zero patients died, zero patients intubated (last ditch ventilation), and only four hospitalizations.

The zinc stopped the cytokine storm – “decreases the morbidity of lower respiratory tract infection in pediatric patients”

So if ever our medical mafia get off the fence on chloroquine and zinc, BoJo may well get his ‘success in three months’ story.

Our raw deaths/confirmed case is 50% higher than the world average. It shows how badly prepared we were, and how badly underfunded the NHS is in comparison.

I disagree that it will be wasted,

I suspect that the Government will start lifting the restrictions on socialising within a month (far too early) as some breathing space in the NHS will be starting to emerge and by then the NIH Medical cartel will release the ‘wonder drug’ chloroquine phosphate for general use, which will of itself reduce the numbers in ICUs.

Of course this depends on them getting testing sorted out, — yet another story of Government incompetence and penny-pinching. If both these preconditions are met it would not surprise me if the Government did not use stick and carrot to extend the relaxation — you can go clubbing/pubbing and back to earning money provided that 40 million people sign up for this spy app….

About time, the UK is going to join the ranks of the other countries using mobile phone tracking data to fight the covid-19 virus.

I see that Data Protection has been standing in the way, but really that was no excuse. BoJo should have just added a phone tracking exemption to the emergency powers Act, but I guess like all the details this Government omits that one was one of the forgotten ones.

As no-one has immunity, everyone will catch it until there is a vaccine that works.

I would not be too surprised if I had not already caught it on February 9th, given my proximity to the South Coast and the people returning to Hove/East Sussex.

I think we are in agreement that we need data, and we need to find good ways of processing that data into information. As often quoted – “If you don’t know where you are, how do you know which direction to go?”. sadly due to underfunding of the NHS we do not even know how many people have already had covid-19. From comprehensive testing in Wuhan and Vo (Italy) we now know that 60-80% of people have the virus with no or few symptoms but are infectious as hell.

We also now know that the peak of infectivity is in the day before there are any obvious symptoms and before they feel ill.

We also know that the virus can be spread not just be infecting surfaces but less often by sneezing and spreading the virus around in the air.

When spread around the virus lasts for a long time on cardboard (24 hours) and weeks on hard surfaces. (I shall in future IPA spray my Amazon parcels). BBC link

There is a lot of information around, except it is rarely compiled into a useful information source, or updated to reflect new knowledge. This week’s New Scientist made a useful effort in putting together some of this critical information, on who spreads the virus and when, and how long do these virus particles last. It is a great shame that the Government continues to churn out dated information rather than taking into account the new information that is available. For example … other health authorities, have emphasised that both washing one’s hands and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily are key in preventing Covid-19’s spread.

                                    Some interesting data resources.

The first shows that the UK is making a pretty poor effort compared to South Korea and China

The second is a generalised resource that plots just about everything Covid-19 related against something else. Again this shows that the UK is pretty poor in terms of the Total Confirmed Cases vs Total Confirmed deaths.

All in all a very useful resource to counteract UK Government BS, and to use when someone tries to compare it with seasonal flu.

Apart from your shopping it was good news day – only 20,000 deaths — that would be marvellous if true. With a population of 67million, and 80% get it, that is roughly 50 million people infected. Even if we match the best in the World (South Korea), their CFR of 0.3% would result in 150,000 deaths.

Methinks either the Government is telling porkies or they have a new strategy – Bang up completely all the vulnerable and then let the disease run rip for 3 months would be a strategy that might work. But it would then require a total sealing of the UK’s borders for another 18 months or until a vaccine is available.
