I honestly do not know. I would make a guess that Performance Monitor is showing a cached value as well. Windows is a bit of a law unto itself, and will always grabs the maximum ram it can., As an aside ram usage has grown and 16Gb is pretty much the new minimum if you plan on running games.

Xcd parodied my comment with this chart.

Wired draws them all together in an article.

As we move slowly away from lockdown and enter a riskier world, this chart may be helpful in assessing the risk associated with various activities.

My only criticism of the chart is that it may give too high an impression of risk and  it should include some non-covid comparative risks. e.g the risk of death from being a motorbike/MTB rider is probably an example of a daily activity that is ‘high’ risk. (I’m not saying bike riders are dangerous, but they are very vulnerable to other road users)

Supposedly the Japanese/Korean habit of eating fermented vegetables (think Kimchi, Miso, Natto and Soya sauce etc) are very good for both gut and heart health. While I really like Asian food I could never quite bring myself to join in with the Korean winter-time habit of eating dog. :negative:

I’m afraid it is not the male’s choice whether tom-boy or not. Nature has its say and so do the other females in the family Grannies in particular love dressing up their grand-daughters.

+1 for Dave’s comments, but I will give just one bit of advice. Communicate very regularly TO your child with plenty of eye contact and not just over its head in a side conversation with your wife. Learning to make eye contact could be labelled a social skill which is almost as important as learning to walk.

Very few people are natural parents so do not feel at all inadequate when asking for help or advice from parents and close friends. Unfortunately Covid restrictions and geography could still rob you of some of the close support you would otherwise get from your parents etc, so do at least make sure that they are tech savvy enough to use Apple Talk, Zoom, Skype or whatever in plenty of time before the big event,

With those comments I’ll now shut up and just wish you and your wife all the very best.

Congratulations on the expected arrival. However it does not mean the complete end of your gaming days they will come back a little as the child reaches 4 or 5, just that the ultra-violent games will be of the Lego Ninjago or Peppa Pig variety! As the child gets older you will find to your chagrin that he or she has faster reactions than you, and that really will be the end of your gaming days for a while!

Pro tip, get the grandparents to buy pads that have pen input. Kids brought up on plain pads are usually quite slow to learn how to write as they struggle with the ‘pen-grip’ and associated hand-eye coordination, especially if left-handed.

Boris should be asking Trump, ‘OK Donald, what plans do any of your tech companies have to give us workable 5G to compare with Huaweii?”

The emphasis should be on GIVE.. IMO 5 eyes is a one way street, we get naff all.

I live in a commuter town, and very few commuters have been furloughed. Despite this, the car parks remain empty and everyone I speak to say they want to continue to work from home. (better quality of life, more home time, more money to spend).  Those in senior management roles say that they are closely assessing the advantages of  ‘hot-desking’ and reducing their office space square footage. Zoom etc has been an eye-opener for many senior managers and they can see real cost savings in preserving the new status-quo.

5G was built into a number of these plans so I’m not sure what the effect of our toadying unnecessarily to the Yanks will do to these plans. I just hope that in five years time we do not read of ex-Ministers enjoying $200000 speaking fees like certain Iraq war toads. I reckon the Huawei 5G mess will cost the country $5billion in direct costs and another £20bn down the pan in opportunity costs.

Never trust a Yank, it is always America first.

If you live in a Dorset hamlet you are lucky to get two buses a week. I have no idea how long they take, but the locals tend to organise car-sharing into Dorchester as there is no feasible alternate. A friend of mine had to go to a hospital appointment in Poole and that took him most of the day in journey time starting with a car share into Dorchester. Retirees would love to have more public transport but the local council only have limited means to subsidise it.

[edit] As an aside it is no wonder that Dorset has very few Covid cases, most residents have  been in lock-down since the days austerity started.

I cannot say I blame the young, they are the ones that have been truly shafted by the way countries (not just the UK) have locked down and forced a sea-change in the way life is lived. We are moving towards a universal base income society in one massive leap, and have destroyed probably 30% of jobs, but I’m not sure that the UK society is ready to fill the ag-lab and care industry vacancies that will exist post Brexit.

Sorry about the missing link. It was actually THIS ONE. It was very similar to the New Statesman link with a couple of differences. (the main one I noticed was the addition of Folkestone, Ashford and Bedford, Luton was missing. It smells like there is a master list that is a tad larger – worrying!

I think I may invest in an HeIQ mask before the second wave.

Covid Age is the way our Local Authorities assess the death risk from Covid. Alama link

It provides a rough and ready way of assessing how much personal risk you face from covid-19 in the event you catch the disease.

It is an interesting way of expressing the factors. Thus for example a 30 year old fat black male with type 1 diabetes has a covid age of 30+10+13=53 and you can then look at the case fatality rate for covid and see that the case fatality rate for that individual is nearly ten times higher than a 30 years old fit white male. However the overwhelming CFR factor is age  – a 30 year old is 60 times more likely to survive than me.

I think the young are starting to absorb this sort of information so it may not be too long before they are all out partying Scottsdale Arizona-style. Their relative risks are low and their financial upsides from culling the non-productive older generation are high. Perhaps the Alama report should be stamped ‘Top Secret’

Actually Bob, Kiwis do not live on nice spaced out farms (apart from those in or near the cannabis growing zones of the *Coromandel peninsular – the people in that area are often completely spaced-out!)

The bulk of the population live in small cities like Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch and small towns such as New Plymouth. Crowds at sporting events are always large.

We could have acted in the same way as NZ but did not, We actually abandoned our test-trace and track efforts when they might have slowed down the growth of the virus. IMO the blame lies with Government and our failure to learn from China – Germany did and had far fewer deaths, so too did Japan. We could have adopted all measures that might have mitigated the spread of the virus but didn’t.

                                      • There is a true story why ‘weed’ is so prevalent in the Coromandel area. In the 1980s a police helicopter swooped down onto a cannabis growing farm in the middle of the dense bush and scooped up all the plants in a big net slung under the helicopter as the plants were required for evidence. Unfortunately the police failed to bag the net properly and also failed to secure it. As a result a huge aerial cannabis crop seeding of the peninsular and many areas of the 100 miles en-route to Auckland took place!.

Based on the recent ONS survey it is going to take some time for the restaurant trade to recover to its old position. Lack of confidence by the Public is the main reason. It puts some credence behind the Chancellor’s cut-price August meal deal.

As some restaurants and cinemas opened in England, 21% of adults across GB said they would be comfortable or very comfortable eating indoors at a restaurant, while 60% said they would be uncomfortable or very uncomfortable. For eating outdoors at a restaurant, the split was 37% likely to feel comfortable with this and 39% saying they would be uncomfortable or very uncomfortable.”

It would be nice to think that the Government tries to preserve the health of the nation, but the economic health of the country and the looming prospect of a major Brexit shock provide huge constraints that probably make the Alternate Sage impractical.

Frankly the only way I can see out of the mess this Government has caused is to pursue a version of the Bolsanaro/Cummings strategy – warn every vulnerable person that they will need to take their own measures to avoid the virus and to expect no Government/NHS help, then fully reopen the economy with no restrictions.

If every vulnerable person socially distanced at 2 metres, wore an N95 mask, and hand washed etc, they would stand a moderate chance of surviving the 12 months or so until a vaccine is around. They would probably stand a better chance than following the default Government strategy.

Although Google makes a good job of keeping the Play Store clean, Android malware does exist, as do exploits to break into the Chrome sandbox. Luckily the criminals work on a bang for the buck basis and there are easier ways of conning money from both Android and Chromebook users. As a result rich naive Apple users are the target for more costly malware development.
