I have two NUC boxes, but never again!

As you found out, the Intel Update Driver Assistant is carp software and can even leave you worse off with an interminable message about updates being available. I have found that sometimes it is necessary to install each driver manually rather than to try and let the Assistant do its worst. :negative:

More in Gizmodo on the Oxford Vaccine cock-up. A bit worrying really that it looks like little or no QC was done on the UK manufactured batches.

Mushroom Matt speaking at 5pm (ish). Covid Dashboard having technical issues — surprise surprise!

Obviously he is a prime example of the Peter Principle – just like Dido Harding a person promoted well beyond their capabilities. Unfortunately that applies to most of this incompetent Government. 🙁

Not so good news everywhere this morning.

Not only that most places will apparently be in tier 2, the economic outlook looks dire with nearly 3 million unemployed (double that at least, if BoJo cocks up the Oven Ready Half Baked Brexit deal he lied about), then on top of that, analysis of the Oxford vaccine data appears to show that they cocked up the testing regime. A Wired analysis casts grave doubt on it getting regulatory approval. link

Unfortunately just like Brexit the devil is in the detail.

On the bright side he may have had a stroke of inspiration and wanted to check if his diagnosis gave treatment hopes.

              Best of luck anyway! :good:

If you had a spare Pi then you could have built your own that would even text you!

                link

I would have used a Pi Noir (Night vision camera) and an IR light. If you did not have a spare pi a pi zero would have been perfectly adequate

You MAY be lucky, suck it and see. Some say that if you can use 5GHz then the BT interference is an acceptable level.

                    Vulkan soon!

                    link

Incidentally Dave, if you use BT+wifi neither works very well as the Broadcom code uses shared space for both. Stutter and dropped bytes is the main symptom (best observed using a BT speaker). If this gets a pain then disable wifi/BT, and add BT/wifi sticks instead. Music over BT is unplayable unless this is done.

                    To disable either/or

                    Add dtoverlay=disable-wifi to /boot/config.txt

and/ or dtoverlay=disable-bt to the same

The Pi4 runs very hot, which then causes it to thermally throttle and perform no better than a Pi2. For that reason a metal honeycomb case plus fan was an essential spec. Cut-outs to support all the Pi outlets and room for a HAT were also part of my spec.

One other oddity of the P4+SSD combo in any setup is that it is at best marginal on a 3A supply. The Geekworm setup uses a 4Amp supply that completely eliminates the dreaded under amp lightning symbol.

The Lancet had some interesting information on how long the Covid virus survives in different parts of the human body which may possibly be a partial explanation for the existence of Long Covid.

Although the virus persists for a long time this is not the same as infectivity which was confirmed as only lasting nine days with the peak infectivity during the first week of illness. (slightly different numbers for the first Covid version)

The virus itself however hangs around for a very long time:

                        a) Nearly three months in the nose and throat.

                        b) Nearly two months in the lungs

                        c) Two months in the blood (and one can assume in the major organs such as the brain, heart and liver)

                        d) Over four months in the guts

Also the older you are (and I assume male vs female) the longer it hits you.

Hopefully no Forumites are suffering from Long Covid, but if you are, being breathless for a couple of months is not unusual.

The Oxford Vaccine press release contains more data than the slightly confusing Beeb account which plays down the vaccine effectiveness. Reading the original press release you can confidently say that the Oxford dose regime that will be used in the UK will give a 90% effectiveness as only an idiot would use the less effective  higher dosage regime.

I found it interesting that ‘priming the pump’ with a lower dose is more effective. B-)

As Covid infections kick-in 3-9 days after infection and as our ‘world-beating’  test&trace system takes two to three days to give results you can expect a surge in cases from the November 4 parties to appear as a spike between the 9th and 17th before any lock-down effects appear.  Then you need to further adjust as the released MSOA numbers are seven day averages and are 5-7 days in the past. I roughly calculate that today will show the first effects of the lock-down.

Thanks Boris, that is better data than the map of MSOAs, but I do like the map’s timeline as that is useful data on the probable causes. In my area it all centred around the local University  or coincided with the last days of summer vacations (maybe the more infectious Spanish Covid variety).

If we really want to cool the earth’s climate and supposedly save the planet, we should encourage the burning of high sulfur fuels in ocean going ships, not ban it as is currently the case. (Transatlantic air travel is pretty good too)

There is indisputable scientific evidence from the CERN CLOUD experiment that sulfuric acid is an essential prerequisite to the formation of clouds over the ocean, and strong scientific evidence that such clouds act as a sunscreen so cooling the planet.

Incidentally there is strong geological evidence that high levels of CO2 are correlated with more plant/animal life on the planet, so I’m not convinced about any link between saving the planet and reducing CO2. (cows farting are much worse!)

A couple of Aussie states have brought in an annual mileage-based electric car tax that wipes out any incentive to get one. The Greenies are up in arms about it. Pretty dumb really, they should have wiped out the petrol duty and made the mileage charge universal, then they could have kept some sort of apparent incentive.

It is built like a pad so it has the limitations of a pad. Multitasking is OK but not great . It is in games that limitations of the built-i graphics will be evident. In terms of grunt it is faster than a 1050Ti, but graphics isn’t just a question of threads and flops.

Just one comment – Amazon are pretty good with refunds so you would not waste money if the cards do not work at all or did not hold that capacity. However the biggest danger would be if you loaded the card up with data.images and they corrupted at a later date. I’d go with Dave’s recommendation as data corruption can be a bigger pain than losing £25.

They just have to do Engineering Inspections on all the existing nuclear plants, give them another 15 years and no probs — other than maybe a few glow in the dark folk around the Severn Estuary!

Just joking, I actually think the dangers from nuclear radiation are grossly exaggerated, As a small child I played around with radium paint to no ill effect. Most of the Fukashima radiation exposures were less than that experienced in Cornwall, and despite a catastrophic event Chernoble caused very few direct or indirect deaths.
